I think rankings are important in helping getting quality recruits into Hamden. I'd rather see the ranking keep climbing to have more top end players head to Quinnipiac.

Eric Hartzell is heading to the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL.

It was announced today that the Pittsburgh Penguins have assigned goaltender Eric Hartzell from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins to the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL.
Since I really don't understand the business workings of pro hockey, are they sending him someplace where he has a better chance to see game action, or are they saying "thanks, but no thanks"?

I knew he was a long shot to see NHL ice this year but thought he might have a chance in the AHL.

Getting assigned to ECHL pretty much means they don't think you are good enough for the NHL. You rarely see players making the NHL from the ECHL. This is pretty disappointing to see him get demoted.

I don’t know why Eric Hartzell was sent down to the ECHL, but many NHL goaltenders played in the ECHL. Tim Thomas, Braden Holtby, Mike Smith, Ben Scrivens (Cornell), Cam Talbot, and Jonathan Quick, to name a few. There are 93 former ECHL players on NHL rosters this year.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

Have no fear people ... I am back. Sam Anas is the male equivalent of Kelly Babstock. Just a freak of nature. I love everything he has brought to the team so far. One thing that is disappointing is that Dad has seen more games than me this year. He was at Lowell, at HC, and was watching the Bentley game online when I came home from work last week. I think he is ready to trade in his Maine colors :p But seriously, I have been very happy with the performance thus far. You know they start the season with these cake Atlantic teams. And I know they lost AIC last year and have had close calls with Atlantic teams in the past/losses to RMU blah blah. But one thing is sure and that is that playing teams like Alaska and Lowell so early makes me feel better about where this team is ranked. Here's to hoping Ol' Andy has one too many bottles of water this week and has to take a bathroom break during the second period.

I can't believe the Yale game is just a week from Saturday. Talk about looking past a team, well three teams in this case. Big ones coming up especially the rematch against Brown. Saw the Frozen Four top ten released -- Here's hoping for Boston or Barclays!

Go Bobcats

That statement is wrong.

Hartzell is down to the ECHL because there are two other goaltenders dressing on their AHL team, he hasn't played yet this season in eight games, and it's high time they get Eric some work.

I disagree. The two guys ahead of him are non prospects both with 1984 birthdays and both turning 30 in Feb and May respectively in 2014. Neither of these guys should be blocking him at all.

I really didn't mean to start a fight...

Another thing that strikes me as odd about this is that the release says the Penguins assigned him to Wheeling. To me that seems to say the big club is still calling the shots and want him to get some ice time. I'm probably wrong but that's what my simple brain is telling me this morning.

The Penguins signed him and control his rights. He's on an NHL two-way contract. Some AHL players are signed by their AHL team, and that's the team that officially controls movement. But Hartzell's on an NHL two-way contract (which means he's part of the 50-contract rule, so yes, he's still an important organizational piece for them), so the NHL team controls where he goes.

They may be non-prospects, but they're veterans who could step into the NHL if needed. I'd guess the Pens want veterans in the AHL in case MAF goes bad again. I don't think it says anything about Hartzell, I just think he's being blocked by organizational needs.

Exactly right. The toughest position to crack in the NHL is goaltender -- too many talented bodies for too few spots -- especially when you factor in the European influx plus major junior kids. There's some pretty good D1 goalies bouncing around the ECHL -- York (RPI), Clemente (Brown), Reikhard (Miami), Malcolm (Yale), Milner (BC). Pens aren't gonna hand Hartzell anything -- he'll earn it, just like everybody else.

Less than 2 hours until game time in Hamilton. Colgate is struggling a little early on but that is no reason to look past them. The Bobcats will need to come out with poise and control. Gartieg will likely see more rubber tonight than he has in a couple of games so he'll need to be on his game. Offensively, they just need to finish their chances.

Go Q!
