Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

Tolks has been walking around campus in a boot for awhile and played through it last weekend. I think they decided this was the right two week stretch to let him get healthy.

He was on crutches at the game tonight. Entertaining game, refs were a bit off to say the least. The Jones facial scrub was a little harsh, but he was defending his goalie, very poor form by the HVD forward shooting about two seconds after the whistle. Could have got a fiver as well for intent to injure. Very hard hitting game.

Nice to see you Mark!

I forgot to mention the refs. My goodness. Not only the calls, but the non-calls. Were they watching the same game the rest of us were?

I listened to Rand's post game comments and he blasted the defense. Says only Devon Toews was good and had to log big minutes. Was forced to put Cory Hibbeler on defense for the PK. Says they didn't deserve to win the game. Also said the depth of the team is a concern as there are 4-5 guys he would like to have scratched but had to play (Thanks Peter Quenneville). Also the team lost D Tom Hilbrich who looks to have left the program. He is not listed on the roster anymore. The depth is now a question with Quenneville and Hilbrich gone (though Hilbrich never played) and K.J. Tiefenwerth red shirting this year after transferring from UMass Amherst.

Where are you seeing this? He's still listed on the website roster and I'm think he was in the stands last night.

I think this is a tribute to the quality of our freshman class.

Sherbinin, pressed into action, scored a rebound goal on the first shot of his first shift of his first career game. No other player in nearly 40 years of hockey at Quinnipiac had accomplished that feat prior to this season; two — defenseman Derek Smith did it last month — have done it this fall.

Toews will be a star. I watched him play a lot as his Surrey Eagles are my local BCJHL team.

Interesting move for Sherbinin up to a forward line. He obviously feels comfortable there. Sounds like lots of cold/flu going through the team.

It's nice to see but Rand did have concerns with the depth issues.
I think that had more to due with the bug going through the locker room than the ability of his roster. He said in the post-game that he had guys that weren't feeling 100% but wanted to play anyway.

It's time to move on. Last night is done and it's 2 points in the books. Regardless of how they came, the focus now has to be the Big Green. You know they'll come out hard since they're still searching for that first win. Giving up as many goals as they have tells me they've got troubles on the blue line and possibly in net. That's what we need to exploit. Lots of pucks to the net and bury the 2nd chance opportunities. Dartmouth also has the ability to score so the D needs to be solid and Garteig needs to play big. No stupid mistakes, and stay out of the box (something they did a good job of last night).

There's another 2 points sitting on the table. Go get 'em.

Go Q!

I want to see a better defensive effort tonight especially after I will be making the 2 hour trip to the game today.

I was talking to a friend last night who works for QU Public Safety, the new rink standing room capacity was rated and determined by the CT State Fire Marshal's office this past off season.

Your right. There's a new fire Marshall and he took away about 500-600 standing capacity. When your about to walk in the rink the capacity is in pretty small lettering on a white sheet of paper. I believe is said something along the lines of 3025 seated 500 standing. The Yale game was upwards of 3600 though

How long until they start selling tickets to watch the video stream on the basketball side? ;)

A better performance than last night, but not by much. Luckily, the competition was weaker. Defense did a better job tonight though still had some weaknesses. Offense was sluggish at times. Anas was pointless for the first time in a long time, though he did have a couple of decent looks. Peca seems to be pressing too hard trying to break open his scoring. Garteig again was good between the pipes, making a few decent saves at key times.

A 4-point weekend is always nice. Next weekend is a home-and-home with Princeton, another team struggling in their season. That's another 4 points for the taking. Hopefully whatever "bug" the team had this week will be gone and they'll be back to normal.

Solid win tonight. Definitely looked a bit better especially on the defensive side. Hopefully they can get healthy. Saw Tolkinen in the stands with a boot on. Heard he will be out a bit. Got hurt before the Yale game. Took the boot off to play in that game but the coaches thought this was the time to get him right especially with Harvard/Dartmouth/Princeton and 2 non league games coming up. Also saw that Zach Luczyk was using a crutch on his right leg. All in all I will take a 4 point weekend. Also nice to talk to Bill Riga at the alumni reception prior to the game.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

My only concern after the last two weekends is with the power play. They've gone 1/20 in the last 4 games (likely the difference in the Yale tie) after cranking off 13/53 (25%). A PPG (or lack thereof) can really change the momentum of a game. Both Yale and Harvard climbed back into their games by virtue of a PPG. Over the first 9 games the PP actually looked good with great puck movement and some nice looks at the net. Lately it's seemed a bit disorganized and too fancy at times. Looking for that last finesse pass instead of putting the puck on net, misguided passes or telegraphed passes getting broken up, etc. Last night looked better than it has but it was still weak. If they can find a bit more consistency, they will be that much more dangerous.

Re: 2013-14 Quinnipiac Bobcats: New season, new scoreboards, new chance at redemption

So after 13 games into the season Quinnipiac after losing 4 starting D-men is #1 in team defense in the country at 1.54 goals a game. St Cloud is number 2 at 1.80. We are also #2 on the Penalty Kill at 92.2% behind Notre Dame at 93%. These freshman have picked right up where the graduating seniors left off.

One of the best, if not the best, freshman class overall at the Q. It's scary to think they'll only get better.
