Hartley should've gotten the same + 1. He started the whole mess.

Agree on that, but Hartley put his goons out there first. The Flames have gone full thug lately.
Torts isn't getting suspended because he matched with his goon line...he's getting suspended for crossing a line and going to the Flames locker room. Had he not done that...they both MAY get a fine and that would be it.

if torts started a skill line and the flames went after them, then yes, hartley would look like a chump. there's no rule on what line you are/are not allowed to start. typical torts just bat**** crazy. that being said, i love having him as a coach in this league. great entertainment.

Nope. In hockey if you send out your fourth line you are saying somethi g wthout actually saying it.

ya know, sometimes it isn't about being the honorable victim. The coach's job is to maximize the number of points. Pulling the dressingroom nutty is silly, but its better than risking your top line to a line brawl or an injury. No goals go on the board for being the better man.

sure, hartley was sending a message...that's his right. if torts didn't want to give in to hartley, he could have sent out a different line. instead, he chose to pour gasoline on the fire. that's also his right. it's torts' conduct afterwards that was typical torts but entirely unnecessary.

Torts could have sent out a skill line, told them to turtle if they're attacked and suddenly have about 15 minutes of 5x3 hockey to run up the score.

Their feud goes back nearly twenty years.

Old time hockey! :D

...anyone who watched the (Rochester) Amerks in 1995-96 surely just smiled and said, "Pfft, we've seen this before."

"That was a normal weekend for us," former Amerks winger Scott Metcalfe said, laughing about the chaos between the Flames and Canucks and the rage of his former Rochester coach.

and unless there's something i don't know about the recent history between the flames and canucks/hartley and torts...there's no way the goons would have attacked the sedins for example.

From the article Steve just posted.

So why didn't Tortorella defuse the situation against the Canucks by putting out a skill line? Why exacerbate the matter by choosing to deploy your set of nuclear weapons against the Hartley starters? Is someone really going to jump the Sedin twins?

"Is someone going to jump Phil Kessel," Nichol countered. "John Scott did (in the Sabres-Maple Leafs preseason game)."

Torts said it afterwards, he's not going to take the chance, not with Hartley behind the bench.

I love that both coaches are admitting they both put out crap players who don't matter to the team. And if they got hurt, oh well, who cares.

Fair enough. I just have a hard time believing that the Flames would have started something if Torts started the Sedins. The only real problem with any of this is Torts' behavior after the fact.
