Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

oh my. Biden is doing the visual version of Al Gore's sighing. does he realize they are both on screen?

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

Why does Biden keep smiling like a lunatic?

I bet Matthews is having multiple aneurysms.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

If Biden can get through it without anally assaulting Martha Raddatz while wearing a Che Guevara t-shirt and smoking reefer, he'll be called the "winner."

I'll take, "Images I Can't Get Out Of My Head Now, Thanks Kepler" for $200, please.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

I know I'm several hours behind, but this is the funniest thing I've read in days. Isn't this a federal law?

18 USC § 1111 - Murder

(a) Murder is the unlawful killing of a human being with malice aforethought. Every murder perpetrated by poison, lying in wait, or any other kind of willful, deliberate, malicious, and premeditated killing; or committed in the perpetration of, or attempt to perpetrate, any arson, escape, murder, kidnapping, treason, espionage, sabotage, aggravated sexual abuse or sexual abuse, child abuse, burglary, or robbery; or perpetrated as part of a pattern or practice of assault or torture against a child or children; or perpetrated from a premeditated design unlawfully and maliciously to effect the death of any human being other than him who is killed, is murder in the first degree.
Any other murder is murder in the second degree.
(b) Within the special maritime and territorial jurisdiction of the United States,
Whoever is guilty of murder in the first degree shall be punished by death or by imprisonment for life;
Whoever is guilty of murder in the second degree, shall be imprisoned for any term of years or for life.
(c) For purposes of this section—
(1) the term “assault” has the same meaning as given that term in section 113;
(2) the term “child” means a person who has not attained the age of 18 years and is—
(A) under the perpetrator’s care or control; or
(B) at least six years younger than the perpetrator;
(3) the term “child abuse” means intentionally or knowingly causing death or serious bodily injury to a child;
(4) the term “pattern or practice of assault or torture” means assault or torture engaged in on at least two occasions;
(5) the term “serious bodily injury” has the meaning set forth in section 1365; and
(6) the term “torture” means conduct, whether or not committed under the color of law, that otherwise satisfies the definition set forth in section 2340 (1).

Okay, to be technical, there's no jurisdiction to apply the federal murder law absent special circumstances, such as it occuring on federal land, for instance.

There's no general police power at the federal level; states' criminal law controls in the vast majority of cases.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

I find Biden's constant unprofessionalism to be refreshing. It's grating but so much better than this.

Then something good will come of this after all.

I can't decide which is more annoying: Ryan's lying or Biden's facial tics.

Well, actually, Ryan's lying is more annoying, particularly now that Biden is rolling. The last five minutes have made Ryan look like Paul Reiser's slimey character in Aliens.

Fark.com posters are saying Biden's winning big.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

Jesus, Biden just ripped Ryan a new one on Afghanistan.

Edit: and now Syria. And Ryan looks like a deer in the headlights, and can only mutter banalities. So much for Mr. Facts and Figures.

The most shocking thing of all: for the Afghanistan and Syria portions, and for some of the Iran portion, this is as close to an actual debate with substantive points and counterpoints that I've seen in the presidential cycle in about 16 years. It genuinely helps when neither person up there is an empty suit.

Biden started pulling away when the candidates dropped below the 10,000 foot rhetorical level and started talking about specifics. Ryan has far more command of specifics than Romney (who pretty obviously just crams a set of talking points an hour beforehand). Ryan's problems are his specifics are checkable and either stretches, misconsturals, or outright falsehoods. Romney could get away with the Mendacity Strategy because he was unpinnable on numbers. Ryan is precise enough to be checked and destroyed.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

Biden picks the wrap-up to slam the 47% remark by trying it to soldiers. That was pretty powerful.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

hey, Kep, can I have a hit of that stuff you are smoking? :)

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

From a great live blog:

9:56 PM: This is getting brutal.

9:59 PM: The economics, social insurance and taxes conversations were not good for Ryan.

10:00 PM: Perhaps if Obama gets a cold Biden can sub in against Romney?

10:02 PM: Ryan’s lost on explaining the Afghanistan drawdown.

10:05 PM: Biden took 30 geritols this morning. Even getting in Raddatz’s face now.

10:06 PM: I think we’re at the point of the fight when both boxers are hanging on each other.

10:08 PM: I think there’s a smallish chance Biden might actually tell someone to get off his lawn.

So the final story of this debate is the same as the first one: thou shalt not underestimate thy opponent.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

I don't know whether they are Ryan's or Biden's, but there are two very, very, very cute girls up there.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

I'm shocked. Chrissie says it was a "clear" victory for Joe Biden. Overall, Ryan wasn't as strong as I'd expected and Biden was about where I thought he'd be. The question of his grinning, head-shaking and all the rest will be answered by others. I found it annoying and cloying and obnoxious. Others might find it refreshing. On the other hand, they didn't find Gore's sighing refreshing, did they?

The key question: will this side show involving #2's move any voters? I don't know. I tend to doubt it. Some of His Ineptness' most ardent supporters may get their sharp objects back, however.

Modest Lawrence O'Donnel just said he understood everything the principals said, but he's not sure if stupid people understood Biden's magnificence. What a putz. "If people were just as smart as I am, this thing would be all over by now."

I still don't know what Ryan and Romney plan to do. On anything. Oh, except cut taxes. I didn't need a debate to know that.

Try, for once, to be honest. If Ryan had done an exigesis of the specific loopholes they plan to propose, you'd criticize him for being wonky and talking over the heads of the American people.
