2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

Or just go back to the mechanical booths. I miss those things. And no, I still do not trust their pens.

Or we could return to punchcards. Reliable, tamper proof, low maintenance and set up costs, low tech and accurate. I voted on punchcards for over a decade in Houston, and there was never a problem. Each voting booth had a sign which read: "make sure you punch the chips (chads) clear through." It took senile buggers and stupid people in Florida to foul up a simple system. "I'm not sure if I'm voting for Al Gore or Pat Buchanan for president, so I'll just vote for both."

Yes, you and I have already agreed on this point. Go ahead and install a voter ID program and take the time to do it right.

There are still some head in the sand types who refuse to acknowledge the obvious, that there is much more widespread support for voter ID among people with no intent to "disenfranchise." It is an unhealthy thing for civil society for people to lose confidence in the integrity of elections, and many people think that's where we are.

Someone running for office had to drop out of her race because she voted in two states in the same election, yet we still have to put up with the myth that voter fraud is a myth? Please.

Let's assume the libstains aren't able to run out the clock on voter ID. Does anybody really believe they won't come up with some new objections? All larded up with words like "disinfranchise" and "suppression" and "racism." Theyll unlease the entire catechism.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

What is your proposed solution? just let it continue?

If the only way to prevent the "perceived" problem is to disenfranchise far more legitimate voters than the number illegal voters being prevented, then yes. You let it continue.

Until either A) fraud becomes so widespread that it's more than a perceived problem or B) there's a solution that actually works, of course we do nothing.

Beg the questions much? Assuming there's a post-election effort to re-instate voter ID laws, you're already prepared for your whine-a-thon. Why not be honest? There is no scheme for reducing (let alone eliminating) fraudulent voting that you would approve of, ever, especially any scheme that might tighten the spigot just a little on the inner city votes you guys treasure and rely on so much.

Out of curiosity, do any other states use the system we have here in Alaska? We get a paper ballot that has the standardized test like ovals next to the names. You fill in the oval, you stick the ballot in a machine that reads the ballot and counts the vote. You get a fast count of ballots and you have a paper record.
That's the way it was in ND and MN when I voted (two separate elections :p).

Looks like Denver Boone is a libstain as he's at the Hardball broadcast...

I voted on paper with a pen in Alaska. I would also be prepared to bet that my vote wasn't counted, but that's a bit of a different issue. :D
(Edit: I hadn't read far enough to see JJAK's post. Although where I lived, you put your ballot in a box. Sometimes it was a lockbox, sometimes a cardboard box. I truly have no idea what happened after that.)

Depends on the state. Some follow the Accountant's Motto "What do you want the number to be?" when reporting results. Others use classical works of fiction. Some report the truth.

Dear God. Obama was terrible tonight. I think the turning point was the third question about the economy.

Out of all the things you could pick, a subsidy to pbs, that's one of the two things that'll help slow government spending.

But he loves big bird.

Re: 2012 Presidential Election Part III: October Surprise!

I couldn't live with myself if I voted for someone who came to the table with the approach "I won't accept any revenue increases. Every penny must come from cuts." Neither should any honest person.

It's too bad the american public has the attention span of honey boo boo otherwise they could actually debate instead of trying to summarize down into one or two talking points what should take fifteen minutes or more to answer.
