Re: 2012 NFL Season

You know, I almost feel bad for Browns fans...but then I realized a lot of them are probably Ohio State fans.

"Character"?

If you want to throw the rules out the window and revel in chaos and stupidity, go watch reality shows. Sports without rules that matter (because of people who aren't able or interested to bother with them) aren't about the competition, but the lowest common denominator. If that's your thing, go watch wrestling. Or the NBA.

The normal NFL refs will still miss calls on occasion. They'll still be a little trigger happy on calls that screw with the flow of the game. But they're actually better than any other alternative and don't turn the game into a side show. I don't care if its pretentious to talk about the integrity of the game, but without that, I don't see why I should bother taking it seriously.

Right, which means it's a barren and sterile wasteland. No entertainment value. It's why I tend to like college sports more than the pros. Take college hockey. Mistakes by the players are far more frequent. An errant pass, a mishandled puck, and missed check. The excitement of anything could happen. The NFL's goal is to drive everyone to the median. A bunch of mediocre teams. No great teams. I can't think of a pro team in recent memory that was truly great.

There were a number of people who agreed with me today at the water cooler. But the few that live, breathe, and sleep the NFL are happy to be back to their security blanket of boring perfection.

Whatever though. To each their own.

Boring perfection. I dislike college football because of the Good Ol' Boys Network and polls. Horrible. I'll watch the games, because football, but do I really care? Nah.

I don't care about football much, especially NFL. The refs screwing up simple things, and people's reactions to it, made me laugh. That's all I'm saying.

And no, I don't like reality TV, save for The Deadliest Catch.

I'm not expecting anyone that loves the game to agree.

Right. I maen, that's a big part of it too. I just love to see people writhe in pain because this is some sort of affront to humanity.

I'll be honest. Football is my first love for sports. The college game is so corrupted, even compared to the NFL, that I have no use for fandom. I also admit, at first, I was hating the replacement refs in the NFL. Then I found out where they came from (DIII, Lingerie League, etc). Then I felt sorry for them. I then blamed the NFL.

However, the NFL level of football...it's awesome. I eat it up. Don't bother me on Sundays sort of thing.

When my first love of sports starts to become a mockery.....I will tend to get riled up.

To each their own indeed.

I guess I don't see the perfection, and last year's Packers are a great example. You can go 15-1 in this league with an astonishingly horrible defense. And that same team that produced insane offensive numbers in the regular season wets the bed in the post season... because they can't get the offense going. You might still find it boring, but it's hardly perfection.

All the same, if it's imperfection and excitement you want, the replacement refs* were guaranteed to give that to you. But look at what you have to give up in order to get it. It's your classic "cut your nose to spite your face" kind of Pyrrhic victory. You get your excitement, but you turn the product into a farcical nightmare to do it. I don't see that as a good trade off, unless you thought the games were a farce to begin with.

* I'm with Brent: you have to feel sorry for those guys. Talk about being thrown to the wolves in a no win situation.

Re: 2012 NFL Season

Fantasy advice: In my WR/TE flex slot, thoughts on Jerome Simpson (first game back after suspension), Andrew Hawkins (producing well but nominally only WR3 for the Bengals), Randall Cobb (recovering from minor injuries and uncertain role; no points for return yards in this league), Robert Meachem (still uncertain chemistry with Rivers), or Fred Davis (not getting as many looks from Griffin as I'd like)? (My WR1 and WR2 are Fitzgerald and Vincent Jackson, TE1 is Scott Chandler.)

Re: 2012 NFL Season

I think it was Buccigross that tweeted the guy that blew the TD/INT call on Monday night reffed a Texas HS game tonight. That's.....quite a step back.

Better than being a former Lingerie League Ref. Yes, at least one existed.

According to the LFL commissioner who was on Barreiro this week, it was an entire crew, and they were fired because they didn't meet the high standards they require to protect their brand.

Re: 2012 NFL Season

He also said that one of their refs was dismissed because he was asking players for phone numbers, and another broke out a flip-cam on the field and started recording a video.
Which, to be fair, any one of us would do.
