2012 Minnesota Twins: 99 Problems...

Re: 2012 Minnesota Twins: 99 Problems...

Mauer is as useless as teats on a boar.

Also, how is The Willinghammer (love that nickname, by the way) supposed to extend his streak if they hit him with pitches!?!?!?

Re: 2012 Minnesota Twins: 99 Problems...

Would they not make that move because he has two years left on his deal?
I don't think that will matter. They'll be needing prospects, and they'll be so far back by then that even if he has another year, they'll deal him. But that is just what I'm expecting, who knows what the Twins are actually thinking.

I suppose that only happens to players who are overpaid. I cannot recall how much Willinghammer is making but I bet it's not enough to scare a team with a bad offense.

3 year, 21 million signed this past off season. It's a very team friendly contract and I just don't see much advantage in trading him unless they get more than just some fringe prospect(s) back because the Twins sill have to pay someone to play in the outfield. They wouldn't get much more than a fringe prospect or two for a 33 year old outfielder.

From a PR perspective, blowing the team up in the 3rd season in the new park would be a disaster given that all the talk was that with a shiny new park the Twins would be able to compete with anyone. The problem is that the Twins lost big-time on Maueroulette: Everyone knew that giving a contract that was ~20% of team payroll to a 6'5" catcher was going to haunt the team, few could have realistically foreseen it happening almost immediately.

The NUMBER ONE rule of building a baseball team is you can NEVER have to much pitching depth, Bill Smith apparently never learned this rule.

Re: 2012 Minnesota Twins: 99 Problems...

The obvious guy who could get traded for pitching is Denard Span. Hopefully that clown Valencia starts to hit so we can get rid of him too.

Re: 2012 Minnesota Twins: 99 Problems...

Maybe we could package Hughes, Casilla, Nishioka, Carroll, Baker, and Liriano to a team for a 29 yr old A-ball pitching prospect.

The amount they're paying Mauer is worth a couple solid starting pitchers (or an ace + a reliever).

Of course, it would have taken some major balls to trade Mauer rather than extend him. I suspect if they had done that, the fanbase would have rioted (even though doing it probably translates to a better team).

If Mauer was producing it wouldn't be as big of deal. The Twins problem is that they are getting terrible value from their high value contracts.

If he and Morneau can produce at expected levels going forward, no one will remember the last 2 years.

So far they are producing near where they need to be. Morneau needs to pick it up a bit.

Mauer - 16 GP, .295 BA, 18 H, 9 RBI, 9 BB, .386 OBP
Morneau - 14 GP, .250 BA, 13 H, 6 RBI, 6 BB, 4 HR, .339 OBP

Re: 2012 Minnesota Twins: 99 Problems...

In addition, everyone thought Mauer could finally do it all when he belted 28 homers in '09.
