2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Trump was never a serious candidate.

No, he was a joke candidate, but he was viable. Should we dig up the South Carolina Republicans who said Obama was born in Africa and they couldn't imagine voting for anyone but Trump?

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

With the debt being over 14 trillion dollars and rising, not even counting unfunded liabilities, I wouldn't say that having our customary dem/rep politicians leading the government is working out too well for us.

Which doesn't at all explain how leading a big business inherently qualifies someone to run a government.

"X=bad" doesn't make "Y=best" a true statement.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

So Tim Pawlenty kicked off his campaign for president by giving a speech in Iowa and calling for the end of ethanol subsidies.

In a related story, Tim Pawlenty announced he was no longer running for president.

If that's true, good on him. What was his stand on the oil subsidies the GOP just saved (not snark, genuinely curious)?

TPaw's probably the only Republican candidate to go on TDS and actually "get it." At least he's not a complete idiot. Baby steps, GOP; baby steps.

Given that the economy is such a big issue, and that neither the Dems nor Reps have shown any ability to get things under control, someone with some business savvy might be good for the country. Running a big business successfully at least demonstrates leadership ability and some fiscal responsibility. We're not seeing much fiscal responsibility in Washington these days from either Presidents or Congress.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Echoing Keps comments, good for him if he said that. The problem is Iowa is do or die for Pawlenty. If he finishes anywhere other than 1st, his campaign is done. He ain't winning New Hampshire, and given a choice between two Yankees running down south the Mittster's got a lot more cash to throw around.

Regarding Cain, perhaps a person with a business background would be helpful, just maybe not one who's trying to get us back on the gold standard and other such libertarian wet dreams. Look, we're already got Ron Paul for that. ;)

Edit: He just posted his speech online. Didn't talk specifically about the oil subsidies, but said...

It's not only ethanol. We need to change our approach to subsidies in all industries.

It can't be done overnight. The industry has made large investments, and it wouldn't be fair to pull the rug out from under it immediately. But we must face the truth that if we want to invite more competition, more investment, and more innovation into an industry - we need to get government out. We also need the government out of the business of handing out favors and special deals. The free market, not freebies from politicians, should decide a company's success. So, as part of a larger reform, we need to phase out subsidies across all sources of energy and all industries, including ethanol. We simply can't afford them anymore.

So at some point in the future he'd propose ending them. I'm guessing the oil subsidies will end just about the same time the oil companies are barreling the last of the oil...

Consistently!
PAWLENTY: "Barack Obama has consistently stood for higher taxes." — Campaign announcement.

THE FACTS: Obama's record shows more tax cutting than tax raising. The stimulus plan early in his presidency cut taxes broadly for the middle class and business, and more recently he won a substantial cut in Social Security taxes for a year. He also campaigned in support of extending the Bush-era tax cuts for all except the wealthy, whose taxes he wanted to raise. In office, he accepted a deal from Republicans extending the tax cuts for all. As for tax increases, Obama won congressional approval to raise them on tobacco and tanning salons.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Tim Pawlenty's answer to everything is "No New Taxes."

Israel? "No New Taxes."
Afghanistan? "No New Taxes."
Pakistan? "No New Taxes."
Energy? "No New Taxes."
Entitlements? "No New Taxes."

etc. etc. etc.

That'll fit right in with the GOP. They like cookie-cutter solutions.

Israel? "9/11"
Afghanistan? "9/11"
Pakistan? "9/11"
Energy? "9/11"
Entitlements? "9/11"

I've been reading non stop press about how disappointed GOP'ers are with their presidential field (to all those "unnamed sources" its a little early to be p ! ssing on the people who, you know, actually want the job IMHO) and I got to thinking; how about Senator DeMint?!?! Forget about the general election for a minute. He'd own Tea party support, kick butt down South as the only regional candidate, and cash in chits from all the new House freshman he backed last year. Furthermore, unlike a Gov Christie or Perry he wouldn't be seen as abandoning his state in the middle of a budget crisis. Wonder if Ailes or Limbaugh has been ringing his phone recently?

Hey fees aren't taxes...I mean taxes are stealing fees are just things you have to pay. Plus they are not even spelled the same way!

According to NY rep Peter King, Giuliani is very close to running for president again.

.....dude. Obama killed Bin Laden.

What on earth are you going to run on, Mr. 9/11?

Just what the GOP race needs, another blue state northern Republican who occasionally takes liberal positions. Yup, the base is gonna love that (about as much as they loved his last campaign).

Hey the unintentional comedy we will get as he stumbles over every statement and opinion makes it worth it for everyone else :D

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

If he wins, can we start the USA branch of the House of Hanover? :)

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

NY-26 (GOP +6) went to Democrat Kathy Hochul 48-42 tonight. First time a Democrat has won since the 19th Century. The pundits will start spinning this....now.

Oh, and indications are that Sarah Palin is finally going to announce for POTUS next month when her movie debuts in Iowa. The film is called "The Undefeated" so it must not be about the '08 campaign.

Nate Silver called this the "worst night for the GOP in some time".
