Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

So Mitt Romney says people should have an "incentive" to live a healthy life.

I have a brain tumor...what "incentive" does he recommend for me?

Maybe if I lived in a different area code :p

Sorry. Wasn't thinking of The County.

It will be interesting to see these guys run wide ("I will torture gay Muslim Mexican science teachers to defend free market fetuses") right to stand a chance in the primaries and then run all the way back to the ("I was misquoted") center to stand a chance in the general.

I don't think Huntsman quite fits with your handy-dandy assumption-based profile. Mitt Romney might.

They all will have to, or they won't get anywhere. Look at how McCain (Mr. Mavericky) had to do the pretzel act. It's just a fact of political life.

Paul won't, but he also won't get anywhere near the nomination. Dude got up at a GOP debate and called out the warfare state. That's not Republican kosher.

And before the deluge, yes, of course there is exactly the same sort of Party PC stuff that goes on with the Dems. Try calling out a union and see where that gets you in a Dem primary.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Huntsmen is going to run this time to get his name out and drop out early enough to not be tainted so he's in a good spot in 2016, hoping that two straight presidential losses will take some of the derp out of the extreme right wing and make him a reasonable choice for a victory.

That would be 5 of 6 losses in popular vote (and darn near 6 out of 6). You would think they'd learn. The real hard core wingnuts are dying off (literally), even in the slave states, so maybe they will.

In other candidate news: very, very funny.

Ron Paul also came out against the Osama bin Laden killing yesterday. If he wasn't toast enough.

They should ask Rand. He's more of a politician; he'd likely know enough to prevaricate.

Speaking of... it was a little sad to see McCain finally stick a fork in the Neocon fascists on torture after fellating them in '08. For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world*, and lose his own soul? :(

That's one smart kid. Good for her.

Not that she'd need to be. I'm pretty sure every poster on USCHO could clean Bachmann's clock on any poli sci, history, civics or econ exam. And that covers a wide spectrum of ability... ;)

It would be nice if there was an IQ test for Congress, since several incumbents would be dismissed out of hand. But as someone once said, in a democracy the stupid need their representatives too.

The "smart" I was really referring to was writing the letter. She saw what she thought was an idiot lying to her on TV and she called her on it. That's a girl with conviction and moxy. She'll go far.

Wasn't McCain always against torture?

Unless, I guess, you get your information from Howard Dean.
as with most political attacks, it turned a grain of truth into a misleading landslide of overheated accusation. A review of the record shows that McCain has neither changed his position on torture nor taken sides with President Bush on the substance of the issue.
I think "turning grains of truth into a misleading landslide of overheated accusation" is a perfect working motto for liberals.

His remark was not intended to be a factual statement

:p I realize that. But under all the dirty talk, there was a definite suggestion that McCain had flipped on the issue. I don't remember him doing so at all.

Re: 2012 Elections Part I: All Politics is Yokel

Maybe he just forgot. He's flipped on most every other issue. :p

Ouch.

To be fair, I did think McCain flipped on torture, but I'll be very glad to be proved wrong. So many of last elections debates turned into torture one-ups-manship shams that it's hard to recall whether McCain was one of the jackals baying for blood.
