I wonder if she can get some of that casino revenue. Not sure what the stardard is on that.
If tribes are run anything like businesses, 99% of the profit goes to the tribal leadership (read: upper management) while the rest get nothing or close to it regardless of the percentage of tribal blood they have flowing in their veins.

For those that thought Obama politicized the killing of Osama Bin Laden.

The tribal leaders get their share after the big boys from Vegas take their "consulting fee"

A friend of mine worked for a tribe out in the Seattle area (she was actually fired by them when she discovered accounting irregularities). 99% is an underestimate. Tribes make Wall Street look ethical, and tribal lobbying makes Big Oil look faint of heart.

Coming this summer --- Occupy Mohegan Sun.

Uh, huh! :D

This is a great piece on the whole "want higher taxes?, write a check" canard.
While I think he's generally on the mark with his points, I bristle at the "fair share" phrase usage.

The definition of "fair" changes depending on who you ask, so demanding a policy change on that basis is a weak argument (as opposed to arguing for a change in rates on the basis of chronic revenue shortfalls, a looming fiscal crisis, and the fact the economy was just fine with higher rates in the past - a much stronger argument).

Agree. Ask a kindergartner what "fair" would be, and he'd say that everyone should pay an equal number of dollars. 3rd graders would probably go for the flat tax.

"Fair" is a lousy standard, because it's no standard at all.

But it rhymes!

On that basis, Eminem and Snoop can set our nation's tax policy. :p
As long as Snoop isn't handling the War on Drugs ;)

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

So Elizabeth Warren is apparantly 1/32 Indian .
Even that is suspect, because your calculation would assume that this ancestor is full-blooded Cherokee. If that ancestor was 1/4 Cherokee, then EW would be 1/128 Cherokee.

Again, not that I care a whit about this so-called "scandal" in the slightest. It's mildly amusing to see one side pretending such outrage and the other side sputtering. If I were a Scott Brown supporter I'd be embarrassed that the campaign has devolved to this level.

On the other hand, elections have been won or lost with less....."Tippecanoe and Tyler too" referred to a battle from 1811 while Harrison was elected in 1841.

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

43% of all income earned comes from the Top 10% of earners, 44% from 10-50. I'd call that a wash.
.

Let's make sure I first understand your statistic. If we take 1,000 working people, then 50% of them have 87% of the total earnings?

If you, then you have reinforced the point I made earlier: tax rates on everyone have to go up. You cannot get anywhere near what you need by raising taxes on only the top 1%.

I've never said, "don't increase their taxes," I've merely said "you are naive or disingenuous if you think that you can increase only their taxes." We aren't even arguing about spending cuts, either!! Obama's budget has spending increasing by 4.5%, Ryan's budget has spending increasing by 3.0%. Only in DC or in politics can an increase of 3.0% be called a "cut."

You don't show what fraction of earned income goes to the top 1%. Let's just say it is 20% for convenience. They are already taxed on average at 20%.

If total income is $1 trillion, then taxing the top 1% at 30% (the proposed Buffett rule) instead of 20% -- a 50% increase -- brings in an incremental 2% of that $1 trillion...."Only" $2 billion more.

If we increase the tax rate on the top 87% by 10%, you bring in $87 billion more, or 335% more.

HINT: the answer is "both." First you go after the top 1%, then once you are safely ensconced in office for a second term, you say "oops" and go after the rest...."I'll have a lot more flexibility when I no longer have to answer to the voters."
Now, you are a money-sucking vacuum cleaner that cannot say no, which do you go after: $2 billion or $87 billion?

That's fascinating. I assumed Harrison's heroics were far more recent in the public mind.

It is, and me, too. For perspective, though, there were 35 years between John Kerry's service in Vietnam ('69) and his Presidential election campaign ('04), but that sure came up an awful lot!

It wasn't so much that things from a long time ago come up. After all, the only thing Dubya ever accomplished happened 54 years before he took office, and that came up a lot. But I always had an idea of Harrison as riding a wave of popular support from his war heroism into office. The battle did make him a national hero, but it was then more than a generation before he became president.

Dude had an amazingly full life, as it turns out. He had already done quite a lot before Tippecanoe!

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

The brilliant thing about Stewart's bit last night was that it cut through all the rhetorical crap.

Yes, Obama gave lip service to not politicizing OBL. Yes, to absolutely nobody's surprise, he politicized it. And the only people who really have a problem with it are people who are already firmly in Romney's camp.

We've politicized the sh-- out of foreign policy in every presidential election I can remember in the past 30 years or so. It's so entrenched, I just take it for granted. Repubs are just pi**ed that someone on the other side stole their playbook. Nothing else to see here.

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

It is shocking that a president would politicize foreign policy, with our brave lads' lives on the line.

Reminds me of one of the greatest political cartoons of all time.

Two soldiers are slogging through a swamp with their rifles held overhead, with a sign pointing to Cambodia nearby. One says to the other, "When Nixon promised he'd get us out of Vietnam, this isn't exactly what I had in mind."
