2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

You mean sports bookies in Vegas don't entertain bets?

Is there any place in my original post that says the Iowa Electronic Futures Market is the only place to put real money on the outcome?*

I'm tempted to buy some Romney futures now so that I can sell them again later, before the election takes place. I'm guessing he'll close the gap somewhat between now and then....we'll see.

Vegas is pretty much a buy-and-hold proposition, isn't it? (of course I could always place a 2nd-bet later if the odds shift and lock in an outcome no matter what, but that's tying up extra money).

* I've heard of people who have no filter between their brain and their mouth, you seem to be one of the few people I've "met" who has no filter between his brain and a keyboard!

I did support Romney in 2008, though. I'm going to need to think back as to why...
That version of him probably said some things you liked. He has reinvented himself a few times since then, not mention how many times he changed before.

Something new:

This is going to be a large sub plot in the election. Not the major plot - that's going to be the economy. But this one is not going away.

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

As I see it, the IEM has it 65-35 Obama. I'd take Romney with those odds.

Does anyone have the Carter - Reagan numbers at this time in 1980?

I'd love to have a dollar every time a righty mentioned either 1980 or Reagan. Hell, I'd be about 10 bucks shy of being a Republican myself. :D

Unless you live in NYS...

Or Minnesota...every election there is some rumor this state could go R but barring Pawlenty being the candidate (and even then it is a stretch) it will not happen for the forseeable future. I could write in my cat it won't change a ****ed thing.

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

We hated John Kerry so we nominated Mitt Romney his twin.

Vote for Romney, 2012.

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

...In addition, after this conversation took place, an article was published that cited several academic studies during the past year, three by government agencies. All of them demonstrated that, when you look at the total compensation package (salary plus benefits) of public-sector employees compared to private-sector employees doing the same work, the former receive substantially higher total compensation compared to the latter.

Dam I read this and realized Mr les must have screwed up somewhere. He works for the local University. His last pay raise was about 2 yrs ago with none in the offing, the health insurance has quadrupled in price and now has a massive deductible (none before) with huge copays for any type of imaging, specialist, etc (our costs have gone up more than 500% since last yr and we are only in the 1st quarter). He also now has to pay for parking but is required to use his own car to drive b/w the various venues he has to work at, all the 'fee things' he has have all increased. This adds up to a pretty sig paycut while he is now required to cover more things with less staff and in no way is he compensated for all the hours he works covering things that he used to have staff for...

Probably something similar. I'm still looking at the IEM details; if I can put money on Romney now at 35 - 65 and then sell when (okay, sigh, "if") it gets to 45 - 55, it's a no-brainer.

Bam needs Ben and Ben has been playing hard to get lately.

wow, it sounds like between the madness at the hospital and your husband's pay cut you have really been suffering. My heart goes out to you.

There was a nuance to those studies, in that they compared the pay for public sector employees and private sector employees for comparable work. I'm not sure how many private sector employees there are in education, so that his situation may not be addressed at all in those studies.

I looked at the Dept of Labor database in excrutiating detail once and they actually have three "sectors": government employees at all levels (25% to 30%), "private sector" (50% to 55%), and then a third sector, "non-profits" which include private schools, hospitals, and foundations (there are a surprising number of foundations in this country, I guess every rich guy who didn't want his kids to grow up spoiled must have set one up!) of 15% to 20%. It is pretty scary to me that over one in four people in the workforce is employed by government at one level or another.

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

There is a world of difference between John Kerry and Mitt Romney.

Give Mittens time. He changes so often I'm sure he'll eventually take on a few of Kerry's characteristics.

mitt made his money. kerry didn't
Kerry made his money the second old-fashioned way. He married into it.

Re: 2012 Elections - Fear is the mind killer. Fear is the little death....

I'm waiting for Barry to tell us how Mitt is a wild-eyed fire-breathing radical who makes soup out of babies and knocks over old men in their walkers, that will be fun to see how he tries to pull that off. I still can't believe that they actually made a commercial with a Ryan look-alike literally tossing a granny off a cliff (yes, as in he wheels her to the edge and dumps her over). Someone who approvingly posted that video on-line actually said "I like how he keeps the wheelchair so that he can go back and get another one."

I think I am just going to ignore the political news until Thanksgiving, it probably will be more fun to go swimming in outhouses than to watch this campaign.

Suddenly being self made is important. Odd how its not important when romney is compared with obama.

"nice town you have here, mr. mayor....sure would be a shame if a bunch of people starting rioting, wouldn't it? oh, thanks so very much for your donation to our community center."

if that's what you think, so be it. i was only stating the obvious. either way works for me. money is money. no reason a guy shouldn't be paid to bang a broad

Universities are probably not in those stats. No one in Mr's profession makes that much money unless they work in the pros (can you spell divorce?) He explored that once. A huge pay raise and travel about 265 days a yr. Um no. Private universities definitely pay more. But overall it is not something you do if you are trying to be wealthy. You do it for love of the job. Thankfully he loves his job. I always tease him. His bro makes mucho buckos. So does his wife. We are the poor step-children :p
