2012 D1 BCS thread

Wonder how may tickets LaTech had to buy and could they sell them? If not, the bowl may have actually cost them money.

Given that the game would have been in Louisiana against the University of Louisiana-Monroe I think that it's safe to say that the bowl game would have sold out. If a bowl can't sell out with 2 local teams, it just needs to fold.

I'm biased...but the Heisman is supposed to be more than stats. If they give it to the guy who was arrested this summer after he got into a fistfight with a middle aged man who took offense to being subjected to racial abuse and after being arrested provided multiple fake identities to the police it lowers the standard to a new level.

From the Heisman site:

The Heisman Memorial Trophy annually recognizes the outstanding college football player whose performance best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Winners epitomize great ability combined with diligence, perseverance, and hard work. The Heisman Trophy Trust ensures the continuation and integrity of this award. The Trust, furthermore, has a charitable mission to support amateur athletics and to provide greater opportunities to the youth of our country. Our goal through these charitable endeavors is for the Heisman Trophy to symbolize the fostering of a sense of community responsibility and service to our youth, especially those disadvantaged or afflicted. All assets of the Trust beyond the expense of maintaining the annual presentation of the Heisman Memorial Trophy are reserved for such charitable causes. The Trustees, who all serve pro bono, are guided by a devotion to college football and are committed to community service and the valued tradition which the Trophy represents.

Re: 2012 D1 BCS thread

To be fair, a summary of that incident (from wikipedia, but citing the original police report):

Police reports state that Manziel was with a friend who directed a racial slur at a man on the street. The man then approached the two of them trying to get at the friend, but Manziel placed himself between the two men saying his friend didn't mean it and he was going to take him home. The man continued pushing against Manziel to reach the other, and eventually Manziel pushed back. At this point, the man swung at Manziel who then began fighting back. Shortly afterward, the bicycle patrol officers arrived. Manziel, who at the time was 19, presented a fake Louisiana driver’s license to police officers showing himself to be 21. Manziel was taken into custody and reportedly spent the night in jail.

According to that, I think he did what he could to be peacemaker in a situation where a dumb drunk guy ruins it for everyone. I won't blame him there. As for the fake ID... yeah, there's a lack of character there, but let's stop and think about where on the sliding scale of bad judgement it is for an underage student to have a fake id.

That said, I'd rather see Te'o win it.

Re: 2012 D1 BCS thread

Te'o won't win it. No matter what it's supposed to be the Heisman has become who is the flashiest player with the best stats and the coolest nickname. Since Manziel has all three of those over Manti, he will win going away. Klein meanwhile doesn't really have a chance since his team lost a game the most recently.

I suspect you are right...if I had a vote and couldn't get comfortable that Te'o has best demonstrated the pursuit of excellence with integrity and couldn't put him at the top of the list for great ability along with diligence, perseverence and hard work and didn't think he'd be the best ambassador for the community service and youth aspect of the Heisman Trust (he literally is an Eagle Scout) AND I wasn't trying to compensate for the Bush issue by putting in somebody that I felt would 'over qualify' in terms of character and I wasn't trying to find the best spokesman for the Heisman Trust and I wasn't concerned that the 2012 winner could get himself in further trouble in the next 3 years, while still in school, or turns out to be a 1 year wonder and we watch the Heisman Trophy winner lower the esteem by the award via poor play...if I wasn't concerned about any of that...you are right, I would vote for Klein.:D

I know they don't get around a table and smoke cigars and figure it out...but if they did, I would ask them what the downside was of electing Te'o...that it over-emphasizes character? And I'd compare that to the downside of Manziel and ask them to think more about the Heisman Trust than stats...then vote their conscience. Problem is, they've elected a bunch of 1 year wonders before, they've sided with stats over integrity before and they all watch sportscenter more than they contemplate diligence, perseverance, community or youth...but I'd feel better for having made the point.

It seems like the voters would much rather vote for a offensive player than a defensive player.

Re: 2012 D1 BCS thread

I'm usually a hater when it comes to Notre Dame. I usually even root for Michigan to beat them.

Grew up in the Chicago area, went to a Catholic high school, had Notre Dame shoved down my throat from day 1 by Chicago media (They do know that ND is in Indiana and not Chicago, right?) etc...

Rudy went to my HS, btw.

Anyway, this time, and maybe only this time, I'm rooting for their LB for Heisman and rooting for them in the Natty Game - as much as I'm rooting at all.

Re: 2012 D1 BCS thread

ND has been largely irrelevant during my lifetime so I just don't have this hatred for them. Actually happy to see them "back". I guess having them win is better than hearing them complain about losing.

Although my bio differs a bit, I'm right with you on all the conclusions. Room for one more on the bandwagon?:)

Re: 2012 D1 BCS thread

I've never liked him.

Could end up biting me (and us) in the arse, but "SEE YA!"

AM 1070 is "looking for confirmation." Pat Forde is a known entity. Looks legit.

ESPN also reporting it.
Hey, I've never liked the ********* either, but we did get results under him.

Who will make highly questionable decisions in our bowl games now?

Re: 2012 D1 BCS thread

I just gotta think that Duh-lema will get eaten alive in the SEC.

Seriously, Arkansas? Have fun with that!
