2012-2013 Bemidji State Beavers: We Are Staying Put

Re: 2012-2013 Bemidji State Beavers: We Are Staying Put

That's crazy, you'd think some Atlantic or ECAC or other conference where they don't play D and the goalies are all sieves would have done it. :D

Ben Hanowski may have joined him by now if he hadn't gotten a concussion; he has missed 5 games and is sitting at 48 goals. Of course he didn't get the benefit of playing in the CHA for a year to pad those stats. :)

Not much padding coming from the CHA games.......

13 goals as a freshman in the CHA
17 goals as a sophomore in the WCHA
19 goals as a junior in the WCHA
1 goal (so far) as a senior in the WCHA

Looks to me like the WCHA is the easier league! :p

Re: 2012-2013 Bemidji State Beavers: We Are Staying Put

While I am a UND fan first and foremost, I'm also a BSU fan(able to watch all home games here in Minot, ND on Lakeland PBS). So I was quite happy to see in the Grand Forks Herald that UND and BSU will continue playing each other after the conference shuffle starting right away next year with a home-and-home series.

Agreed. Very happy to see this series continue, and also happy to see this as a home and home series.

Agreed and it is great to see. With the proximity of the two schools and setting it up as a home and home eliminates the need for hotel rooms and helps cut down on costs at least a little bit. Hopefully they alternate Friday and Saturday nights.

Re: 2012-2013 Bemidji State Beavers: We Are Staying Put

Still trying to digest last night's snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. The defensive lapses, ouch, for a team that is usually sound defensively. Walsh really seemed to be fighting the puck as well. Four goals definitely is a plus, but to give up five? Hopefully the drive up to Bemidji today is worth it.

Yeah... or he wasn't as good his freshman year

Re: 2012-2013 Bemidji State Beavers: We Are Staying Put

BSU recruit Phil Marinaccio was traded and joins fellow BSU recruit Corey Petrash in Cedar Rapids. His 1stgood game will be tonight vs Waterloo. My first chance to see him will be Saturday night. I will keep the thread updated on how he looks

Re: 2012-2013 Bemidji State Beavers: We Are Staying Put

Just heard that BSU AD Rick Goeb is being replaced at the end of the year. Didn't see that coming.....

Re: 2012-2013 Bemidji State Beavers: We Are Staying Put

Just some random thoughts that I put together during my lunch break.

It will be interesting to say the least. Not sure what this will mean for the hockey program, but a lot will depend on the hire (hockey person versus non-hockey person).

Football and Mens Basketball have each won conference titles under his watch, with basketball making a couple of NCAA Regionals. Both of those haven't happen since the 1960s, IIRC. Hockey has made the move to the WCHA and played multiple NCAA Tournament games, including the 09 Frozen Four. Womens basketball looks poised to make some noise this year.

Rick, as AD, has been sitting on committees to help with the transition from the old WCHA to the new WCHA. He is also a member of the NCAA Ice Hockey Tournament Committee.

But, like the article said, BSU is falling behind in the NSIC Arms Race, right now to the tune of 18 scholarships, average. When the NCC teams came over to the NSIC, that changed the dynamics of the league from a funding standpoint. Some schools have kept up, others have not and BSU is in danger of becoming a have not. Those 18 scholarships at say $10,000 (just a guess) is $180,000 more that needs to be raised.

Facilities wise, the gym has a new floor thanks to the Lueken Family and their donation. The locker rooms have undergone upgrades and the John Glas Fieldhouse has become somewhat of an indoor practice facility with hopes of laying some turf in there. There is a decent soccer field on campus, but the Chet could definitely use some work, which is probably going to take some major cash. The Sanford Center is a very nice hockey facility, but that was done through the City of Bemidji and not the University.

I guess right now, it is all about the money, and it is going to become even more so with the changing WCHA on the mens hockey side.

I hope this all turns out well and does not set BSU back....

I agree 100%. Rick's done a great job for BSU. Not sure if fundraising was his forte, but it's hard to argue with the programs' successes the past few years. Maybe they can fundraise enough to get each program at full scholarships - that would be great (isn't that why the MBB coach Bowen left?). However, they need to find someone with the talent athletic program-wise that Rick had/has. MN colleges are an odd duck, in the fact that hockey is the revenue generator, so yes, I hope they find a candidate that doesn't mess that up.

Not worth making a game thread for this week so I'll ask it here. Any hope that BSU splits or gets a point this weekend? Sounds like they stunk in Mankato.
