2012-13 Hockey East Thread

Re: 2012-13 Hockey East Thread

1.) Boston College - Top talent in a relatively weak league. Frozen Four team likely.
2.) BU - Second most talent in the league
3.) Providence - Team up the street is a darkhorse about to unleash a monster goalie
4.) Mass@Lowell - Not as talented as Lowell fans think. Expect a step back year and a return to Earth by Wilson
5.) NH - Fights for home ice most of the year.
6.) Maine - Tough to replace the weapons as they slide after their NCAA year last year
7.) Northeastern - I hope Roy sucks and flunks out of school
8.) Merrimack - Back to reality
9.) Massachusetts - Only 9th because of the existence of UVM
10) UVM - Worst Hockey East team since the early UMass teams

Re: 2012-13 Hockey East Thread

1. BC - until knocked off.
2. Lowell - returns almost everyone, including Carr and ROTY Wilson.
3. BU - lots of talent, hopefully for Terrier fans they'll have fewer distractions and subtractions.
4. PC - gotta love what they're doing in Providence. Tough team.
5. UNH - Umile's team fights hard but goes on the road for the playoffs.
6. NU - I think NU will be better than people think, IF Rawlings isn't a complete tool like last season.
7. Maine - lost too much firepower. The end of Timmay Time?
8. Merrimack - without Cannata they're toast.
9. UMass - awful, but Vermont is worse.
10. UVM - something is rotten in the state of Vermont. Too bad, I like Sneddon.

Does Gaudreau win Hockey East POTY?
Gaudreau wins Hobey. Book it.

As for teams, it's a two team race this year with everyone else having a slap fight for 3rd place. Lowell's going to be legit. Too bad they play the most boring hockey not played on a grassy field.

Re: 2012-13 Hockey East Thread

Just like every other year in recent memory, a majority of posters will predict that UMass will miss the Hockey East Playoffs. Just like every other year in recent memory, they will be wrong.

If I predicted that UMass will be swept by BC at Conte in the QFs, would that make you happy? ;)

Does Gaudreau win Hockey East POTY?

Uh, Hello...haven't you ever heard of Scott Wilson? Jeesh...

:p

Lowell was 4th is scoring offense for Hockey East, overall and conference. Boring how?

Re: 2012-13 Hockey East Thread

1. Boston College: BC is BC -- 'nuff said.
2. Boston University: BU is BU -- i.e., a darn good team, but not on the level of BC.
3. New Hampshire: Gonna trick everyone up here by not saying "UNH is UNH." ;) Seriously, this team should return to form after an off year.
4. Lowell: Here only by default because I don't see anyone else challenging for this spot. Lowell will not be as good as they were last year. They won't have the benefit of the "new coach high" and they aren't going to sneak up on anyone like they did last year.
5. Providence: Don't know much about this team other than some people expect them to be good.
6. UVM: This team will sneak up on anyone that views them as league patsies. They'll return to playing the kind of gritty, working-class hockey that worked so well in the past. Scoring is always a problem and with the loss of Stalberg and Girgensons could be again this year.
7. Maine: Solid team, but not much in the way of scoring.
8. Merrimack: A return to earth after several seasons competing with hockey's elite.
9. Northeastern: The addition of Kevin Roy won't get this team any higher in the standings.
10. UMass:John Micheletto won't provide the "new coach high" that Lowell benefited from last year.

Re: 2012-13 Hockey East Thread

1. Boston College - Defending NCAA champions and a very good recruiting class (Matheson especially). Also have one of the best talents in the nation in Gaudreau.
2. Boston University - Second most talented team in Hockey East but questions on defense and freshmen goaltenders are up in the air.
3. UMass-Lowell - They could very well finish second. Same coach, same core, still have Doug Carr so I see NCAA's in their future.
4. Providence - They bring in a very good class with Jankowski and Gillies. Key is Schaller staying healthy. Garden is not out of the question.
5. UNH - Less questions at goaltender than Maine and even without Moses, enough firepower to contend for home ice.
6/7. Maine - Maine lost 2/3 of most of their offense and still has subpar goaltending.
6/7. Northeastern - This is my Hockey East darkhorse to be a lesser version of Lowell last year. If the overage freshman hold together on D, this is a team with a senior goaltender and a very good top 6. Kevin Roy is an immediate impact player and I expect a season similar to Scott Wilson last year. If they can avoid the injuries they had down the stretch last season (losing 2/3 of the 3rd line and 2/3 of the 2nd line) they could challenge for home ice. If the D collapses and pressure is on Rawlings, they will fight for 8th with UMASS.
8. Merrimack - The seniors that turned the program around two years ago are gone and more importantly, so is standout Joe Cannata. I expect a big step back but still a playoff team.
9. UMASS - New coach, not too much talent, new system, too much to overcome.
10. Vermont - Would've been nice to get Zemgus because it's going to be a long season. Just hope Brickley is healthy this time around.

Re: 2012-13 Hockey East Thread

My quick thoughts based mainly on departures and not knowing a ton about the recruits..

Stock rising: PC, UML, BU - all three returning solid talent and goaltending

Stock neutral: BC (I'd say they're at the top of the mountain), UNH, UMA, NU

Stock falling: MC (Cannata impossible to replace? Scoring?), Maine (No more vaudeville duo of Abbot and Flynn), UVM

-People are bullish on UNH here, I'm curious how they'll replace Moses and whether they can actually get a solid year of goaltending.
-BU - addition by subtraction?

Looking forward to the last year of the 10-team format.

How can UVM's stock fall anymore than where it was last year? Are you predicting a 0-win season for them this time around?

Re: 2012-13 Hockey East Thread

There is no chance UVM finishes higher than Maine, Merrimack or Northeastern this season. Zero. Better to accept it now.
We'll see. On paper, I would tend to agree with you. The games are played on the ice, however, and I think we'll surprise some people.

Re: 2012-13 Hockey East Thread

Few thoughts:

UMass Amherst has a solid junior class and now has stability in net. They will finish higher than UNH who was a below average team wthout Moses. I think we all agree UVM will be last but with the loss of Cannata and no offense, Merrimack will be 9th. Northeastern will be exciting with the large recruit class but their defense and reliance on youth will hinder them all year..they will be 7th or 8th. I like UMass 6 and Maine 5th as both have enough returning talent to compete. At the top, I like BC, BU, Lowell and Providence 4th. lowell was overated last year and will take a small step back.
