2012-13 College Hockey Schedule for NBC Sports

Re: 2012-13 College Hockey Schedule for NBC Sports

All 21 DU home games will be broadcast on TV (6 on ROOT Sports & 3 On NBC) or streamed live on Pioneer Vision (12 games). I assume the 2 games at Minny will be on FSN North and the 2 at UND will be on FCS. That leaves 10 away games we don't know about (SCSU, UMD, Bemidji, Mankato and CC). I know in the past CBS Sports has gone to Colorado Springs for DU/CC games.

Re: 2012-13 College Hockey Schedule for NBC Sports

Not a big surprise that NBC's schedule favors Notre Dame and Hockey East. Hopefully between NBC, CBS College Sports and the regional Fox Sports games there will be plenty of college hockey on TV. It'll also be interesting to see what happens with the NHL and if NBC picks up more games if the NHL season is delayed or cancelled. Hopefully someone will do the Penn State game vs. American International. It's not a sexy matchup, but it'd be great for college hockey fans across the nation to see the first official NCAA game for a new team.

And BTN.

Did anyone else notice that there are no Minnesota schools on the NBC Sports lineup? (unless I missed it)

Michigan and Michigan State both get ok coverage from Fox Sports Detroit. If not on Fox Sports, many Michigan home games have been "covered" by Comcast Local. (or Xfinity, or whatever name they are going by).

Minnesota already has virtually all of their games on TV between FSN and the BTN. Even when NBC carried the Minnesota at UNO game last season, FSN covered the game as well. And most Minnesota fans I would guess tuned into the FSN broadcast. Not surprising NBC isn't carrying many of their games. And to be honest, I don't think many Gopher fans care all too much. FSN and the BTN broadcast all games in HD and do a pretty good job with the production (well, FSN does, but the BTN has improved greatly).

As for why UMD, SCSU, BSU, and MS-M are left out in the cold, that surprises me too. However, I am guessing it has a lot to do with the fact that NBC has deals in place with Hockey East, UNO, and DU.

That would be kinda cool to see PSU's first D1 game.

Brad Schlossman posted last night on Twitter that current TV deals might be having an affect on this.

Saw that. He's probably right. I know it was a factor with the Minnesota games. I doubt NBC wants to air a game they know another network will be broadcasting in HD.

FIVE UNO games? THREE for Yale, TWO each for Cornell, Harvard and Union? Who picks these games?

I didn't expect to see Houghton on their list of stops as we're not exactly tearing it up the last couple decades, but given some of the games they picked to show, now I feel slighted when we have to watch some of the crap they picked to broadcast. What a joke of a schedule.

I hope these games won't cut into NBC's coverage of the Notre Dame intramural flag football quarterfinals and some of the "premium" events that make it on their network.

Notice that each Union game is against an Ivy League opponent, just like both of RPI's games last year. They want to show off some marketable teams, and they believe the Ivy League is marketable.

As has been stated before, NBC has agreements with UNO and DU, that is why they get the only "western" slots on the schedule. Also, Cornell, Harvard, and Union should all be very solid teams this season, and we could very well see all three in the NCAA tournament. I haven't looked at the schedule all that closely, but my guess is that the three Yale games you mentioned are against Cornell, Harvard, and Union.

Re: 2012-13 College Hockey Schedule for NBC Sports

Looks like NBC/Versus will have to fill six or eight hours a week of prime-time they budgeted to hockey broadcasts. They could go to re-runs, other sporting events (dressage?), minor league hockey, or even college hockey. Market size will be the determining factor. The upper midwest does not fare well here [sorry F.S.23]. You can bet your team sweatshirts that access to national (vs. local) T.V. coverage will sway the decisions of the most sought-after college hockey recruits.

I can't believe your rep is still red with brilliance like this coming from your keyboard.

Are you disagreeing - claiming that national [vs. regional] coverage isn't a major consideration for top prospects - or are you just dissing me? I hope you will explain your disagreement and this isn't just a silly personal thing.

Oh right, it's all about some silly picture. It can't possibly be about the coaching staff, campus/facilities, or in the case of some of the eastern schools practically guaranteed playing time...

Both, and it's not personal. Denver, Minnesota and North Dakota for instance do not have national coverage do not lack in signing talented prospects. I certainly don't think a mere few hours of possible additional attention per season should a player opt to play elsewhere are going to change that. You once again have seen something where it does not exist and chosen to bloviate about it.

Re: 2012-13 College Hockey Schedule for NBC Sports

Some college hockey fans restrict their thoughts to one team, one state, or one conference, others dwell on the past or the present. I'm interested in the future of college hockey; how it will change [and it will], and what influences will shape this change. To be sure the upper midwest has and continues to recruit top prospects and produce first-rate DI hockey teams, but this is not written in stone. I suspect television coverage will increasingly favor hockey programs in big market areas, as it has favored such teams in other sports. No offense intended, just trying to see which way the game is headed.

Re: 2012-13 College Hockey Schedule for NBC Sports

Minnesota will get plenty of national exposure on the BTN next season, so it's a moot point anyways.

I'm in Fort Worth, TX right now watching the BTN.

Well, you are wrong. Teams in the upper Mid-West currently have some of the best TV deals in college hockey (and attendance figures to boot). I don't see that changing anytime soon with the BTHC having the BTN and the NCHC having signed it's own TV deal.

When I see "Big Market" (and I assume you're referring to East Coast) teams have 30+ games a year televised, then we'll talk.

I wouldn't say that, if I were you. You're not going to want to talk to him no matter what the situation.
