2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

It's time again to start planning for the annual posters' game at the FF. I have volunteered to help out the usual planners as I am local and can check with rinks.

I realize that with current airline baggage fees it'll be tough for people flying in to bring their gear. As a result it may be more local skaters and those who can drive to the Twin Cities who will play this year. I'll also kick around and see how possible it is to borrow some gear for those who really want to play.

Feel free to chip in with ideas, questions, comments.

I have checked with the U of MN and they require a $300 liability policy in addition to the ~200/hr for ice time at either Ridder or Mariucci. I suspect we'll be looking at different rinks for that reason. Any thoughts on the best east side rinks for this are welcome.

Are you talking about the State Fair Coliseum? If so, yes they still have ice in April. If you mean the White Bear Lake Hippodrome (which is a small rink) then no.

State Fair Hippodrome. That would be a good venue for the poster game. Easy to find, no parking problems, plus it has the added draw that it is the venue where I won a MN State Fair purple ribbon.

Did you successfully mate with the pig?

The Coliseum would be fun. It's too bad this takes place in April. It would be awesome to go out on a lake and do this.

Re: 2011 Posters' Game - St Paul

The Coliseum would be a fun venue to skate, but I have to imagine the ice would be garbage by April. There's enough quality rinks in the area that you should be able to get something better for cheaper.

I wouldn't expect it to be much different than any average high school rink in April though.

(I always call the place the Hippodrome since that is what it used to be referred to and my family called it that when I was growing up, so we still refer to the place as Hippodrome. I don't know when it started being referred to as the Colisseum...)

Skating in April, it is good to find a rink with some form of dehumidification, otherwise the ice gets mushy. I doubt the Coliseum has it, some community rinks may, I'll ask when I call them.

I'm in, and it's conceivable I could be able to assist the organizers should they so request.

What is the closest one? Highland? Phalen?

I played at Roseville all summer and the ice was always in good shape.

I'd probably be up for being a game photographer again. In Denver I did okay rotating 3 cameras and acting like a stereotypical Japanese tourist. ;)

We request.

The usual organizers have been pretty disorganized to this point. At the moment, I'm not sure which members of the group are going to be actively involved this year. On the personal side, it appears that a family obligation will cause me to miss a portion of FF weekend, including the Posters' Game. So this year's management may be more local than usual.

Not that this is a problem or any sort of major departure. In the usual year, we've tried to have at least one local organizer, and some have even taken the lead role. alfablue did a fine job last year setting us up at Yost. In Denver, Quizmire took the lead and booked Magness for us. I'm very grateful that goldy 331 has stepped up this year. We anticipate that EvilGoalie (Rochester, MN) will be part of the group. But I'm sure there will be a role for you to play.

Let me trade some messages with the long-time organizers, and find out exactly what roles we're trying to fill. In the meantime, feel free to e-mail me if you wish.
