The stupid part is it's supposedly 5 years, 50 million up front. So the last 4 are 8.5 total? That's horse****.

Of course it is....but that's the NHL. The league had an opportunity to step in on these type of contracts a few years ago and didn't...and now this is what we're left with. Unless the deal is so blatantly over the top, they're not going to do anything.

Not sure what the next CBA will hold, but I really hope they address this issue. I'm a proponent of the "25% rule", where salary in any two years of the term could not deviate more than 25 percent.

That's what, 2.125 mil per year, on average from ages 36-40? Seems reasonable based on what other 36-40 year olds get on the open market these days to be "a veteran presence in the locker room" or some other BS.

I suspect that this is something that will be addressed in the next CBA, I suspect that the salary cap is going to go from average value to actual value of the contract. But for now, this is how the NHL deals with these things.

That isn't really going to change anything, Richards contract would still be a guarunteed 9 years for 58.5 mill with and AAV of 6.5, just how the money is distributed will be different with a longer tail. The cap impact will be exactly the same. If you want to do something different, you have to go with actual contract value and not average.

Dreger saying 9 yrs/60M now.

Not sure I'm understanding. I think what the 25% thing is designed to do is eliminate the back end of a contract's value, when those years could theoretically be bought out for a cheap amount (and low cap hit).

Again, its just something I've seen discused, didn't delve into it as much as I should have.

Did anyone see BizNasty's tweet to BRichards yesterday?

Hey @BRichards_1991, if you sign with Phoenix you can buy the team. It worked out for Mario. #MakeItRain

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Or you can have a max-contract length like the NBA has had. Neuters the ability to throw in extra years to lower the hit if you can't go over say, 6 years in one contract.

Biz should have his own TV show.
In other news, Brian Burke spent July 1 with Canadian troops in Kandahar. I don't know whether to applaud him or scream, but I lean to the former.

Toronto signs Tim Connelly for 2 years, 4.75 AAV.

One response

He just broke his hand signing the contract, fell out of his chair and got concussed.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Ian White signs in Detroit, 2 years, 2.875 per.

Hell, he took a pay cut. Makes up for the Ericsson signing.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Vokoun signs in Washington for one year at 1.5 million.

Philly curses Vokoun's agent.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

as the washington's goaltending wheel goes round and round...
Not really. Holtby is better off in the AHL getting playing time. Neuvirth gets to study, play some behind a premium goaltender and learn what it is to be a #1 goaltender. And it is short money and short term.

1.5 mill isn't a really a premium goaltender... I didn't realize they got rid of varlamov... I'll also admit to not watching a ton of games. It seems like every year they're trying to figure it out in net.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Nashville just made a terrible deal.

Franson and Lombardi to Toronto for Lebda and Slaney.

Losing Lomardi is no big deal, as they played without him all last year and that wasn't a very smart signing to begin with. But Franson is a major loss. He offered protection in case they lose Suter next year. Yes, they still have Ellis and Blum, but that's a major loss.

We all know Ledba sucks, and who the eff is Robert Slaney?

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Clearing cap space? Lombardi's 3.5 million for two more years, while Lebda/ECHL guy is 1.4 for one more year.
