Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

The circle logo looks like something a middle-schooler threw together with Photoshop.

The smaller ones on the right are fine, particularly the pilot's wings. Could've done something other than the maple leaf, but I guess that other leaf-themed franchise has been kind of disgracing it lately.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

The leaf is there as a tribute to the RCAF, as that's what the logo is based on.
Seems to be you either love it or hate it so far. :)

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Well done Winnipeg.

I'm buying a jersey. Now where's Brent to say they suck and they should have gone old school?:D

Being Canadian and having an uncle in the RCAF during WWII, I love it.

"We have always had a close relationship with 17 Wing throughout the years, dating back to our annual Manitoba Moose Military Night," said Dorian Morphy, Senior Director, Marketing & Brand Management of True North Sports & Entertainment. "We are thrilled to be able to continue this relationship in a significant way. The design cues for the plane were inspired by the military jets flown by the Air Force over the years. So not only were we able to establish a new identity for our brand, but we were able to maintain a traditional, time honored look to the logo."

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

i don't like them, but their heart was in the right place and it's their team - not mine. c'est la vie.

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

The one spelling out "Jets" looks like it came out of Labatt Blue headquarters.

My new theory is that they had no intention of naming this team "Jets" while they were buying it and had to slap together new logos after they bent to public demand. Wouldn't be shocked if they redid the logos within five years.

Wrong. I like 2 of the three logos. I dislike the script one. It looks like they wanted retro, but it just looks outdated. I really like the plane one/circle logo (what appears to be the main logo).

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

I like them all. I will be interested to see how they will look on a jersey

Re: 2011 NHL Off-Season: The Puck Boat edition

Guess you missed the point. Yeah, it's cheap if the 21 goal player shows up next season and not the 4 goal player from 09-10. Personally I think the 21 goals was a fluke. This season, especially with him most likely getting less ice time, I see him netting more like 8-10 goals.

I don't see what bearing the 09-10 season has on this upcoming season. Players progress and fill roles. It took Boyle a while to carve out a niche in the NHL, but he certainly showed signs of doing so. He's far more likely to score 21 goals than he is 4. I'd be pretty surprised if he doesn't score at least 15. At 1.7 per, I just don't see it as an overpayment. He might not get as much ice time, but even so, he averaged top six minutes last year.

It's not a theory, you're absolutely right on that part. A couple friends who know the Moose (now Jets) owners were to the Draft and had a chance to chat with him on the concourse.

They were all set to go with the Manitoba Moose in the NHL. Had EVERYTHING set for it (jerseys, merchandise, the whole ball of wax). Then the public backlash started with the whining of the team name being too "minor league." The Manitoba Falcons name that was kicked around too? Was what the team was going to be after the complaints about the Moose name.

But the whines from the masses for their *ing "Jets" was too loud. They caved to the pressure of a public that just wanted to dust off their old jerseys.

TNSE didn't want the Jets name because the Jets history resides in Phoenix, and they were NOT getting the history if they copied the name. TNSE wanted Moose, because that was the brand that they brought to Manitoba, and they worked so hard to build up. The Moose are what brought the NHL back to Winnipeg. The Jets are still in PHX.

You mean the Minnesota Moose?

I just gave my old Moose sweatshirt to my kid. :p

I don't understand why, since the NHL owns the PHX, why they couldn't transfer that history to the new Jets, sure a gap would exist from when the original jets moved and the new jets franchise started, but I don't think that would be that big of deal, not like anyone would care that the history wasn't from the original franchise. Cleveland was able to keep the history of the original browns when they moved and become the Ravens and MLB gave the history of the Senators to the new team in DC (who are now the TX Rangers) stripping in from the original franchise (which moved to MN to become the Twins).

I'd love noting more then for the NHL to return the 1967-1993 history of the North Stars to the Wild so that it resides with people who will both enjoy, respect, and cherish it the way that it deserves.

Past performance has no bearing on future performance, eh? He's not going to get top six minutes anymore is the number one reason why I think his production will decrease. He's going to most likely get put on the fourth line now and play what, maybe 6 - 8 minutes a game. Unless he switches positions, which even then I am not sure whom he replaces in the top three lines (certainly he's not cracking the top two lines). I also very much think last season could be a fluke. Mostly because his numbers dropped off so dramatically towards then end of the season. With those things against him, I think it is a bad signing money-wise for a player who not going to get much ice time and won't score that much.

Yep. The team that was so unloved by the hockey fans in Minnesota that wanted an NHL team that it was moved to Winnipeg.

From what I've read, Cleveland fought the NHL HARD to keep the rights to the Browns history. I didn't know that the Senators history was stripped away from the Twins; what about from the Rangers too? Seems odd to only take it away from one team and not the other. Last I knew, all the Expos history was theirs, not the city's two Senators teams.

And it's kinda hard to just take away PHX's history while the team is still there. You can't quite wave the blinking pen from MiB in front of our faces and make us believe that WPG didn't move to the Desert. PHX wasn't an expansion franchise, it was moved.

Way to parse what I said. Past performance can certainly be a good indicator of what will happen in the future, but you can't just pick and choose what year to go back to. By all accounts Boyle improved his skating dramatically and it paid off for him last season. He had a breakout year. I think you're flat out crazy if you think he's only gonna get 6-8 minutes a game. If that's the case, if that's how Tortorella decides to use him, then yes, it was an overpayment. I just don't see that happening. I think he'll regularly see 10+ minutes a game and will score closer to 21 than he will 4. Even if he averages top nine minutes, if he puts up around 15 goals, I just don't see how that's an overpayment. Plus, it wouldn't look like an overpayment to you if the Rangers actually knew what they were doing in regard to other players.

This doesn't make sense. "if the Rangers actually knew what they were doing in regard to other players" implies that the Rangers overpay other players, and if we accept that as true then wouldn't MattS be *less* likely to view Boyle's deal as an overpay in comparison?

Putting it a different way, since the above might be poorly worded, if the Rangers knew what they were doing in regard to other players, and didn't overpay those other players, wouldn't Boyle's deal look more like an overpayment, not less as you suggest?

Good lord, how did I pick and choose what year to go back to? Hm, let see...

07-08: 8 GP, 4 G
08-09: 28 GP, 4 G
09-10: 71 GP, 4 G
10-11: 82 GP, 21 G.

Yes, he might have had a breakout season, but like I mentioned I doubt it.

There is simply no way he will get 10+ minutes a night unless he plays a ton of PK minutes. Between the Richards, Gaborik, and whomever line (let not kid ourselves that it will be Boyle) and the Anisimov, Dubinsky & Cally line, that is more than half of the game right there. And do you really think Stepan is going to be relegated to fourth line duty? Stepan has just as many goals and was a rookie! So that leaves Boyle on the fourth line unless he changes positions (which I suppose could happen). And thus fourth line minutes. Maybe he gets some PP time on the second unit which would help. It's not a knock on Boyle, he could be a good 3rd liner, but the Rangers have an over abundance of centers, and I think Boyle is going to be the odd man out.

I hope I am wrong about Boyle's production. But in this salary cap age, I think it is foolish to chance that kind of money on a player who has had one good half season in the NHL, and will most likely get put on a fourth line. But hey this is Sather and this is what he does best. Overpay for players that weren't going anywhere.

The question of Jets team history being in Phoenix will be resolved when the Yotes move to Quebec City or Kansas City. :D
