Re: 2011 NCAA Womens Hockey Championship Game: Wisconsin Badgers vs. BU Terriers

Huh ?......Both the goals scored by Poulin today and Wasylk on Friday were fantastic goals to see, both great efforts by the goal scorers. Wasylk cut around a Wisco D, cut in front of the net and scored on the reverse backhand. Poulin looked off the goalie, faked the pass and then on her off wing put the puck upstairs far corner, also on the back hand. To me they were simply fantastic goals. Not much the goalie could have done better on either.

Normally WHKY blogger is very factual and neutral in reporting. I noticed that all 3 goals scored against Wisconsin in the Frozen Four were unassisted goals. I'm going to give WHKY the benefit of the doubt and assume that "selfish" was a poor choice of a word to represent "unassisted," and not an indictment of the players scoring the (very pretty) goals.

It does say something that the only goals against the Wisconsin "D" were via hugely talented efforts by an individual. To go 60 minutes with only a couple of defensive breakdowns - or to only be beaten a few times in a game 1-on-1 is saying something about the discipline and team-centered coaching of the Badgers.

How did Mark Johnson let Poulin slip through his fingers? He should have recruited her;)
Didn't she score both goals against his team in the olympics?

Jeez...do you want to get ALL the great players???? :) It's clear that the WCHA is still ahead, but it was a great season by BU just to get to the championship and very instrumental in continuing to build the program. As in everything else, things will tighted up as team play against better competition. Performances like this will aid recruiting and with the increase in the number of good players, the march toward parity will becom inevitable (and it will be better for the sport)...

Sorry for the all the typos...I guess I need to slow down...

Re: 2011 NCAA Womens Hockey Championship Game: Wisconsin Badgers vs. BU Terriers

Pretty sure Wisco recruited Poulin....

I haven't seen a march towards parity. I don't think it's inevitable. I think next year will be the most dominant year yet for the WCHA. Just count the number of teams with Olympians. I suspect the only force capable of stopping the WCHA from getting 3 in the Frozen Four as in 2009 will be the NCAA seeding criteria.

Re: 2011 NCAA Womens Hockey Championship Game: Wisconsin Badgers vs. BU Terriers

That was more of a rhetorical comment....knowing that she beat Mark Johnson's olympic team:)
Perhaps putting under age drinking on public display was just not tolerated in Wisconsin.....
Ok, that's another rhetorical comment.....
My money is still on the badgers next year regardless.

Yeah, I don't buy this whole better for the sports thing. NCAA might like the idea of being the commies but I don't.
The sport will do just fine without big brother messing with it. Poulin going to BU is actually the best example.
She certainly didn't go to BU to balance out the teams or doing what's good for the sport. She must have liked the school and/or the coaches. That's bound to happen eventually. WCHA has a leg up right now only because the talents are mostly being developed locally. This could change as well.

I don't know how long the WCHA will enjoy having a leg up. IceIsNice could probably help us with that one. ;) I don't anticipate a drop off in development of local players though.

Wisconsin has had some local talent to be sure (Engstrom, Burish, Zaugg, Vetter, Decker), but for every local name, there is one that was not local (MacLeod, Slusar, Mikkelson, Bauer, Knight, Lawler, Duggan, Ammerman x 2). UMD's success depends very little on local talent.
