2011 Minnesota Offseason Thread

Re: 2011 Minnesota Offseason Thread

I noticed that the USCHO didn't list Guentzel as the asst. coach on the Minnesota page:

http://www.uscho.com/team/minnesota/mens-hockey/

So I visited the U of M website, which does list him with his picture. However, if you click on his name you get this:

Wow. Pretty big screw up!!

Suze: Hanging her hat on her hatred of a man due to events long ago, and minor website mistakes since August 1999.

Is this really what you're spending your time on?

Re: 2011 Minnesota Offseason Thread

Coach Ikola is the winningest HS hockey coach in Minnesota history (probably the nation). An amazing coach and a real classy guy too.
You must not be from the Range. My wife is and she describe Ikola as a sell out that betrayed the Iron Range to illegally recruit and coach a bunch of "612-ers." (A 612-er is someone from the Twin Cities as the 612 area code used to cover the entire metro) Any accomplishments are tainted by the fact that he wouldn't hold true to his roots.

Not that they hold a grudge or anything. ;)

I don't hate the man, he's not worth my expending that kind of energy. And I wouldn't call that mistake MINOR! LOL

I would. They just rebuilt the whole website and they misdirected one link. BFD

JFR, Coach Ikola NEVER recruited, he didn't need to because he already had at the time the best feeder program in the state. ;)

Umm, he BUILT that feeder program. When he started in 1958 Edina was not a hockey powerhouse (or really, a powerhouse in any sport).

I've heard a lot of envious whinning about Edina hockey in the past, but never heard any "recruiting" claims about the hockey teams. Who does gopheritall's wife think he recruited? I don't remember any kids from Ike's powerhouse teams who transferred in.

Re: 2011 Minnesota Offseason Thread

A bit touchy today george? ;)

Touchy?!?!?! WHAT THE HELL DO YOU MEAN TOUCHY?!?!?!?!?

No. :p

Just that I've heard a lot of whinny biotching about Hornet hockey but never heard recruiting mentioned. The only recruiting accusation I remember about Edina was when Bob Zender moved to Edina from Michigan and started the string of 69 BB wins in a row.

I also wanted to point out to 444 that there really wasn't much of a feeder program back when Ike started so he had to build one.

He never recruited from anywhere. When we were in his office he had so much mail that he needed a person just to help him open all of it. He was always busy. Tough but fair. I think we played four to six weeks of indoor hockey at Southview from 7th grade to 9th grade it was all we did and we didn't care. It wasn't until years later that I found out he used the indoor hockey as a try out for varsity players. We just didn't know it. LOL.

I know that because I lived it. He always told everybody if it weren't for the feeder program he couldn't have won 8 championships. Here he has been gone for years and the feeder program he built is still one of the best in the state. If cities want to win in hockey they should try to mirror the Edina Hockey Association.

I was trying to point out their irrational hatred for the Cities' programs. I was not trying to make any actual accusations. However, Ikola is viewed as a traitor. I'm not from the range and bring him up once in while to stir the pot.

Irrational about sums it up...absurd might be another adjective that fits their brand of colloquial near sightedness. So would Lucia be a traitor too because he deserted the folks in Grand Rapids? Or is this brand of myopic lunacy reserved for HS coaches only?

He is only viewed as a traitor because he never played for the Golden Gophers.

(This would probably be better for GPL, but I am hesitatn to start posting there since my work network now blocks me from this site. I don't want GPL blocked too, or what would I do on my lunch break? Talk to real people?)

Does anyone know if the Gophers are talking to, showing an interest in Jake Bischoff?
