Being new to all this, what is the policy behind the no D3 scholarship rule - especially in hockey where there is no real D2? I'm sure there is a valid reason, I just don't know it.

Doesn't matter what the sport is. Schools classified as Division III cannot provide athletic scholarships. Period. Only exception are those schools who have a sport playing up in Division I who provided scholarships in that sport in the past (like Clarkson). New play ups (like RIT) or schools that never offered scholarships in the first place (like Union) can no longer do that.

They can only provide need based grants or academic scholarships just like the rest of the student population.

Why don't they look into some of the other colleges? I suppose it is easier to investigate a no-factor college team than a team like Norwich or St. Norbert.

Everyone knows that those two teams have incredible financial aid awards for their best student hockey players, who all I am sure, are at the top of the top in the classroom.

It is not an accident why the same few teams are always in the mix come NCAA finals time. Great financial aid! Just ask Adrian...it works.

There cannot be a discernible difference between financial aid packages given to athletes and non-athletes. Period. If the financial aid situation is good at a school for athletes, it is good for all students. Schools get hit by these regulations when they offer Canadian aid packages that are only accepted by hockey players. That's what has hit all of the hockey programs that have been flagged for these violations. Coaches will advocate for increasing aid for a particular player that they really want, but the financial aid office has to be very careful not too go to far. Private schools tend to have more financial aid resources, but there's also the fact that the cost of attendance is higher. Historically successful program have an advantage in recruiting. If it would cost you the same amount of money out of pocket to attend Buffalo State or St. Norbert - where would you want to go?

Thanks for the replies. I understand the rule. My real question though is why is the rule in place. What is the policy they are serving by implementing this rule? Maybe there is no good answer.

Because that is the philosophy that schools that play DIII sports wish to abide by. If they wanted to give athletic scholarships they would be in DII, DI or NAIA Division 1.

Don't even get me started lol....and remember, the money has nothing to do why parents, I mean athletes, choose their school....

There's a perfectly good reason -- the schools WANT it that way. Nobody forced them into it.

Where did you get/ hear the information on Monfredo and Howard? Not on the NAHL website or their teams
