2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

Re: 2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

Out of the other possible matchups I think it was the best for attendance. To be honest, that low figure surprises me a little. I didn't think they'd have any trouble selling those two teams out for a BCS Bowl.

No local interest in the bowl, probably. You usually have 10-20k in locals for a Sugar Bowl, I bet. Everyone in New Orleans is waiting for next Monday.

Compounded moreso by the NC game having the local (SEC) teams with the Sugar Bowl itself having no SEC teams.

Any idea on how much the tickets cost? If they are expensive, I doubt many will want to see both the Sugar and the (insert the name of the highest paying sponsor eventually) bowl. Especially in this economy.

The problem was that everyone bought a bunch of tickets for the Sugar Bowl that they weren't using--either scalpers on speculation of a sexy match-up, or by coercion in VT's case-- which absolutely flooded the secondary ticket market, and made the value of tickets well below actual face price. My family's tickets were $180 face, that they paid $28 a piece for through an online broker.

I know LSU and 'Bama had to pay $350 a ticket for each band member. I don't know if that's premium seating price or the same price everywhere in the stadium though. Either way, at that price for a premium, a 'cheapy' in the upper deck probably isn't too cheap either.

You're certainly going in the right direction. But my perception is that the lack of local support is often a problem, not just when the title game is in town.

I've only been to one Sugar Bowl, and that was years ago. But I was stunned by the almost total absence of local fans in the building. Based on apparel and behavior: The crowd consisted of the two fan bases, a few thousand tourists and many thousands of empty seats.

Point: Both last night's game and my game lacked an SEC team. Maybe the locals will come out to support their conference brethren. Maybe. But given the relatively proximity of New Orleans to most SEC schools, a participating SEC fanbase is likely capable of filling the stadium with its own people.

So my best guess is that:

1. Locals aren't in the habit of attending the game, period; and
2. It only becomes noticeable when there's no SEC participant.

Did Clemson ever get ON the plane for this game, let alone get off it to show up? Yeesh. Slaughter, and the big east wins a BCS bowl game.

Boise is probably giving the middle finger to VaTech for not getting it done against Clemson, thus keeping them from a probable Sugar Bowl berth. Man, VaTech vs WVU would have been a fun matchup if it happened, with their relatively close proximity to each other. And Boise/Michigan could have been fun too. Oh well.

Clemson was actually outplaying West Virginia through the 1st Quarter and the start of the 2nd. The Tigers were on the verge of taking a 24-21 lead when Ellington fumbled at the goalline and W. Va returned it 99 yards for the TD and a 28-17 lead. After that, it was all West Virginia. Clemson is a good team, but they are extremely young (42 of their 84 scholarship players are Freshmen or Redshirt Freshmen...they will be stacked for the next few years). When the momentum swung West Virginia's way, it was all over.

I'm not sure V Tech - W. Va would have been any better. Clemson thoroughly destroyed Va Tech twice this season, and Clemson is a similar team to W. Va.

WVU put up 49 points in the first half, finished with 70 points. Highest scoring bowl game in history. Crazyness.

Nobody plays defense anymore, apparently. Unless you're 'Bama or LSU.

If I had a vote at this point, Alabama would have to crush LSU for me to vote LSU something other than #1.

Say Alabama wins 14-7. So, they split head to head. They play essentially the same SEC schedule (no South Carolina), except LSU beat Georgia. LSU also beat the Rose Bowl and Orange Bowl champs. Alabama beat Penn State. Not comparable.

OSU should have been the choice over Alabama. I hope Alabama wins the game 6-5 and everyone's head explodes the next day.

It would not surprise me at all to also find out that the Sugar Bowl was packaged together with the NCG (i.e. fans purchasing for the championship had to buy in with a package that included Sugar Bowl tickets); last year's tying of the Fiesta Bowl to the NCG led to a massive amount of tickets being sold for pennies on the dollar compared to face value for the Fiesta itself, from Auburn/Oregon fans needing to divest themselves of tickets they'd bought for the NCG. Unsurprisingly, both UConn and Oklahoma, the Fiesta Bowl participants, struggled to fill their designated allotment.

So, Penn State hires Bill O'Brien from the Patriots to be their new head coach and Lavar Arrington decides to disown his alma mater. So, the fact that this hiring came as a result of a former coach being accused of child molestation and a cover up doesn't cuase him to be disgusted with this alma mater but this hiring does? Seriously?

My guess is they're really just wanting a fall guy to hang around for 2 or 3 years until they can hire somebody better to restore PSU to glory. Hell, I don't think a lot of coaches right now would really want that job with all that went down this season with the relavations about Sandusky and how much was covered up by the administration there in Happy Valley, and whatever the NCAA my lower on PSU in the future because of that.

Re: 2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

Penn State's football alumni don't get it because they don't think Paterno should have been let go. Therefore, the job should just go to Bradley or someone else on the staff. The problem is that there is a future trial with discovery phases upcoming, and god help them if their newly promoted coach gets his name dropped as well, on top of having to answer questions every time news breaks on it or when he enters a recruits home.

Therefore, you have to go completely outside so when the stories break over the next few years, he shrugs it off and says, "I don't know, because I wasn't here." It has to be a clean break.

On the other hand, if I'm a Penn State fan, I'm infuriated that O'Brien is going to stick with the Patriots through the playoffs. Their recruiting class is melting away, and if the Pats don't implode like the last two years, National Signing Day is 4 days *before* the Super Bowl. He won't have time to find a coaching staff to recruit for him if he's still doing NFL work.

Like I said, I think he's really just being hired as a place holder till all the shibby comes down. When the dust settles from Sandusky he's gone and then PSU goes and finds somebody else to become coach.
