2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

Re: 2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

Like I said, I think he's really just being hired as a place holder till all the shibby comes down. When the dust settles from Sandusky he's gone and then PSU goes and finds somebody else to become coach.

The question I have is why does O'Brien want that job?

could be a pay raise, a chance to beef up his resume. He could pretty well drop to some MAC school later on that would be more than happy to take him in along with the recruiting contacts he made while at PSU and have a long tenure at one of those schools. Or get back to the league somewhere.

Re: 2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

Pay raise and Belichick's an ***? I dunno.

Money! Get away,
Get a good job with good pay
And you're OK

The job will only last 2-3 years, but he'll collect plenty of cash before getting fired.

Re: 2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

I figured it had to be money. Good to know Penn State still has truckloads despite the legal issues.

Re: 2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

I hate NDSU as much as the next guy, so I'm not sure why I find myself rooting for them in the Div 1 Championship. Must be provincialism. More entertaining game than the meaningless bowl on ESPN too.

Re: 2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

I don't hate NDSU and it p's off the UND fans to have them do well, so Congrats Bison! :D

Re: 2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

Reports are that O'Brien's salary at Penn State will be $900K with $200K in incentives. How much of a raise is that over what he was getting with the Pats?

Re: 2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

It's 2.3 million with radio/Nike/TV stuff. Safe to say it's a raise.

Re: 2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

The rest of the B1G salaries, for comparison:

So, naturally, it's time to take a look at where the Big Ten coaches stand. Here are the salaries for each coach in the league (Joe Paterno is still listed as Penn State's head coach) and the number in parenthesis is where each one ranks nationally (the USA Today chart also has potential bonus money included, but we'll just deal with guaranteed pay here):

1. Kirk Ferentz, Iowa: $3.785 million (5)

2. Brady Hoke, Michigan: $3.254 million (8)

3. Bo Pelini, Nebraska: $2.775 million (13)

4. Bret Bielema, Wisconsin: $2,598,186 (17)

5. Mark Dantonio Michigan State: $1.918 million (34)

6. Ron Zook, Illinois: $1.755 million (39)

7. Jerry Kill, Minnesota: $1.7 million (42)

8. Kevin Wilson, Indiana: $1.26 million (56)

9. Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern: $1,189,961 (58)

10. Luke Fickell, Ohio State: $1.172 million (59)

11. Joe Paterno, Penn State: $1,022,794 (64)

12. Danny Hope, Purdue: $925,000 (65)

Wow. Nike pays a lot.

Brian Cuban (Mark's brother and a Penn State alumnus) says Paterno's salary was only $20K/season. Maybe after he gave money back to the school?

Would probably sound about right. JoePa did give a lot back to PSU in scholorships, and hell, he probably mostly ate for free anywhere in Happy Valley, or got a very generous senior citizen discount on stuff.

And for the only college football game I cared about this postseason....Congrats to the Bison!!! I listened to it on the radio on Saturday, because I refuse to watch ESPN.

They win a National Championship and instead of celebrating it they still obsess with the team formerly known as the Sioux. It warms my heart!

Tell me why FCS can do a playoff again? Must be they don't take classes like FBS schools

Yeah, Div I-AA and Div-III schools don't really care about academics the way Alabama and LSU do.

Re: 2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

Major Conference TV $$$ is why.

The High Major conferences hate that the NCAA gives as much as they do to the other 27-28 conferences in NCAA basketball credits, since they're of the opinion that they bring >90% of the eyeballs, especially after the first weekend, and that the tournament makes basketball's regular season near worthless outside of Duke/UNC and a few Big East teams.

The Big Ten would rather get $23 million per school knowing that the MAC gets $200,000 per school or whatever than go to a playoff where they'd make $50 million per school while the MAC gets $5 million for their sacrificial conference champion each year.

The Presidents also fear that ESPN/ABC/CBS won't pay as much for the regular season with a playoff, though I think they should stop looking at NCAA basketball as the comparison and look at the NFL instead, which does just fine in making ESPN pay billions for crappy MNF football matchups and no playoff games.

Pfft, like any of us on here are going to believe YOU have a heart! :p

Re: 2011 College Football Part II: Bowls, The Rematch, and Recruiting >Tebow

Finally have an Internet connection/signal after a 9-day vacation.

Seriously, I ****ing hate Bielema. So much. He's not the reason they lost, but he's the reason for the Badgers being pointlessly handicapped late in a close game against a great team.

I'm sure there are large swaths of my fellow alums who somehow love that jerk even more, though. I'm sure it wouldn't take long to find them on Buckyville, SBNation or Alvarez's taint.

The person who created that opening montage should be beaten with a hose. Terrible.
