2011-2012: WCHA Predictions - Summer Edition

Re: 2011-2012: WCHA Predictions - Summer Edition

Take it to the bank,
1) DU
2) SCSU
3) UND
4) CC
5) UM
6) UMD
7) UNO
8) BU
9) UW
10) Mankato
11) AA
12 MTU
After a terrible start last year SCSU recovered to be a top team in the second half and almost upset the eventual NCAA champion. I may be wrong about UW and UMD, they might switch places.

Western Bias, BU is underrated.

Re: 2011-2012: WCHA Predictions - Summer Edition

1) CC, Return a ton of offense (75% of points, 73% of goals), Howe should improve as he continues to grow
2) UNO, Impressive Frosh class takes larger role as sophomores, Blais continues to improve program top to bottom
3) UND, Aaron Dell and the UND Defense hold strong until the Sioux find more offense and dominate the 2nd half
4) DU, Injury to Brittian hurts more than many expect and DU suffers inspite of their offense
5) UMD, Losing the punch from 2/3rds of the Connolly-Connolly-Fontaine line will hurt ALOT
6) UAA, Shyiak has this program headed in the right direction and they will continue to improve
7) Wisc, UW will struggle to score with so much roster turnover, Defense will keep things close, but no home ice
8) MTU, Tech returns 86.2% of its points and 91% of its goals, if they can find some defense in front of their goaltenders, they will be much improved
9) Min, Minnesota sucks, returns half what it had last year and doesn't seem to be headed in the right direction
10) SCSU, I don't know what to say, I don't think they're very good and they will struggle
11) BSU, The beavers are struggling with the transition to the WCHA and their struggles will continue
12) MSUM, Mankato is suspect on many levels and doesn't return much that will turn heads

Re: 2011-2012: WCHA Predictions - Summer Edition

Since CC seems to be the general favorite, I will go out on a limb a bit and say DU's goaltending will turn out to be less of an issue than we think just looking at numbers:

1) Denver
2) CC
3) North Dakota
4) Omaha

After the top four, there is a group that will likely finish anywhere from 5-8:

5) Minnesota
6) Duluth
7) Wisconsin
8) St. Cloud

...and a group that will likely finish 9-12:

9) Anchorage
10) Bemidji
11) Mankato
12) Tech

The teams in the middle and bottom groups are interchangeable within their groups, like they have been in many years past. However, if WCHA play has proven anything, the final standings are usually only 50~60% predictable.

Re: 2011-2012: WCHA Predictions - Summer Edition

I'm sorry, but if you pick your team last it is time to turn in your fan card.....

Michigan Tech will not finish last this season. It is the start of something good.

Go Mel....

It certainly can not go down any! UAA always plays a tough physical game. They have come real close to ending the streak the last time they were in the NHC.

Re: 2011-2012: WCHA Predictions - Summer Edition

I'll guess too:

1. DU
2. CC
3. UND
4. UMN
5. UNO
6. UMD
7. UW
8. SCSU
9, UAA
10. MTU
11. BSU
12. MSUM

Feel free to laugh. :)

Ummm, there is no requirement that you have to be optimistic in order to be a fan of a team...You can still cheer for a team and hope they do well, while looking at it logically and say "yeah, they suck, they're probably going to come in last".

Sorry, but I'm not quite drinking the Kool Aid yet. Most of the scoring forwards on this team will be freshmen or sophomores, and everyone will be getting used to a new coach. I'm not confident that a majority of our defensemen have what it takes to play Pearson's up-tempo style (though I suspect that he won't be able to fully implement his vision until he gets more of 'his' recruits in there). I'm comfortable saying that they will win more than two conference games this year, and should improve as the season progresses. I'd guess that the ceiling is 9th place, but they could just as easily finish last.

Re: 2011-2012: WCHA Predictions - Summer Edition

My loose guesses:

1/2 = Colorado College or Denver (It'll be a tussle between these two for the top spot)
3-5 = UMD, UNO, UND (I think each of these teams will get home ice; it's just a matter of where they fall. Just don't let UNO get Bemidji again please... :p)
6-8 = Minnesota, Wisconsin, Bemidji (This will be where the true scrumming will go on. The weak link here is Bemidji just because they are so inconsistent)
9/10 = SCSU, UAA (Not that these are bad teams but the level of competition elsewhere in the league is too much for them unless they go on a surprising run)
11/12 = Tech, Mankato (Mediocre teams with good upside in the future... just not this season)

I'd put the % of chance of Tech's finish at each position at:

1: 0.003%
2: 0.007%
3: 0.02%
4: 0.07%
5: 0.1%
6: 0.3%
7: 0.5%
8: 1%
9: 3%
10: 10%
11: 25%
12: 60%

So if you REALLY believe this, then you'd be crazy to not take a bet saying that SCSU finishes ahead of MTU if I spot you 2.5 points. So what're your terms sir?

I predict UAA's winning percentage against SCSU at the Concrete Center will improve this season.

You think they'll tie a game there? That's pretty optimistic of ya.

Can't speak for SG, but I don't think you could even get me drunk enough to take that bet under any terms.

Re: 2011-2012: WCHA Predictions - Summer Edition

1. SCSU
2. BSU
3. MTU
3. MN-S
5. UAA
6-12. All tied with zero points.
Bruce's new WCHA conference standings system awards 0 points for a win if the team desires to terminate its membership within the next two years.

I hope half of you enjoy being bottom feeders in your new "super" conference because you can't all finish in the top half anymore. Have fun listening to your fans start ******ing after your first losing season in conference.

Enjoy what you asked for... and I'm taking odds on who will be the first team to bolt from the "super conference". The over/under is five years.
