2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

Re: 2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

Didn't Chris Hansen give you the news on this?

Gerbe's younger brother was recruited by Parker and ended up at BU for a brief amount of time. But it turned out he was dumber than Chris Bourque and Parker cleaned out his locker before he ever got a chance to spear or slash one of his own teammates in practice. I guess if Jack didn't get rid of him the team GPA would have been lowered so badly that he was threatened with double secret probation by school president Bobby Brown and part of that penalty was that Jack's liquor cabinet would be emptied. Naturally, we know what JAck's choice was. Duh!

Anyway, the younger Gerbe is now in the pros somwhere, where he magically changed his ways just like Gionta, Pat Eaves, his brother Nate, Ryan Shannon, Andrew Alberts, Brooks Orpik, Brian Gibbons, Cam Atkinson, Chris Collins, and every other BC player that was good at the college level. It's MAGIC!!!!!!!!! Hopefully he doesn't revert back to his old, hostile ways. It would be a shame to see stories in the paper about him kicking someone's face in outside of a bar.

Yikes! Yet another creepy Chris Hansen reference that speaks for itself.

Seems someone can’t let a tame jab at BC go unanswered, so, borrowing The Donald's M.O., there's a way-too-long, fantasy-filled tirade.

Listing the names of numerous talented Eagles who’ve gone on to the NHL [and belching out the inevitable and juvenile Parker/booze reference] doesn’t change the unshakable reality: Gerbe, while easily among the most skilled players in Hockey East during the past decade, ranks right at the top among dirty ones. No doubt that the vast majority of non-BC Hockey East fans would agree.

Re: 2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

I like this year's freshman class. The Cats will rebound fine next year, I think. I will be happy if they can at least grab the eighth spot and play a couple games in the HE 1/4s this year. Looks like the Woverines may miss this year's NCAA's also, although they did beat the Spartans tonight.
I agree, like what I see out of the freshman and sophmore class, I dont see this as a long term thing I still care and feel the future is not dismal like most people around here. This year might not end well but I still think the future is looking good, I am far from ready to jump off the bandwagon.

Re: 2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

Given that UNH faces a mighty tough task to reach the top four, and the bizarre schedule its reasonable to think that most of us will be done visiting the Whittemore Center by mid-February.

I agree as well. They have impressed me many during quite a few games this season, and I just see them getting better.

That's pretty much it, isn't it? Lights out at the Whit the third week in February? Pretty unacceptable as far as I'm concerned. But this is the reality unless they can get some sort of turnaround in the second half. The schedule was kind of bizarre when I first saw it, given the fact that senior night would come two weeks before the end of the regular season. And given that there are just too many teams that have a jump on them and have as much upside as they do, home ice seems like a pipe dream at this point.

So where do we go from here? First, Umile has to make a decision on the goaltending. Does he decide to stick with DiGi full time, or does he start to give DeSmith and Wyer (when he gets healthy) a share of games? To me the answer is obvious, your #1 has regressed this year, has shown no signs of snapping out of it, so you back off him, still give him some games but provide him with some competition for the next month and see where it goes. This will be a tough thing for Umile to do because his watchword has always been loyalty to the senior class. But team confidence starts with the goaltending. Solid, if not spectacular. goaltending lifts teams. Mediocre or awful goaltending deflates them.

Defensively, we just have to hope that the three youngins, especially TVR, continue to improve. All three have decent size, seem to have decent offensive skills, but defense for all three appears to be sometime thing. Of the three upperclassmen, I have to think that Hardowa has had a pretty solid year, Kipp and Kostolansky not so much. if the latter two can pick it up and play at the level they played last year, then you could have the makings of a solid defensive team.

As for the forwards, the main difference between this team and those of the last few years is the ability of the senior class to make it happen. Does anyone see a Butler or Thompson type performance emerging from this group? Thought so. So that leaves it to guys like Burke (thought he had a good game vs. BU), Henrion, Sorkin, Silengo and a what seems to be a good group of freshmen to take the lead. UNH had success a month ago because they got some contributions from all four lines. Have not seen that lately. Time for these guys to regroup and make us all believers again.

You know that all season the Maine fans who post on this forum have been on the fire Whitehead bandwagon because of the Black Bears indifferent play. I think it is a testament to UNH fans that we have not sunk to that level regarding Umile. The fact that he has coached teams to 15 straight home ice berths, and 14 NCAA bids in that time, does count for something. I'm not sure it translates to "faith" in the coach, but more about "he's got a proven track record, let's give him the benefit of the doubt, given what he's got to work with."

That's not much to hang your hat, is it? But it's what we got at this point. I have seen worse (although it is a long, long time ago), I just hope I get to seem play in March.

IF, a big IF, the Cats can go 10 and 5 the rest of the way in their HE games, perhaps with some help they can grab 4th. But, they must sweep PC and Maine, and get some help from others against UML. I do not see any way that they can get into the NCAAs post-season without going deep in the HE tourney, which is also the only means that they are likely to win 20 games. I believe that Umile's only other sub-20 win seasons since their disastrous first year at Lake Whitt (12-18-4 in 1995-1996), were in 1992-1993 (18-17-3) and in 2009-2010 (18-14-7, but HE RS co-champions?).

I say give DeSmith or Wyer the net in the Brown game, and if that goes well, that goalie gets Maine at Fenway Park and PC on January 11th. I do not really care who starts against Dartmouth, and my guess is that we will not pick up any points the last two weekends of January. So, that means going 9-1 the rest of the regular season.

I'm guessing you're wearing the rose-colored shades today? ;)

Man, that's a pretty optimistic scenario. I just don't see it happening. And I concur with the posts below -- I, too, like what I see from the freshman and sophomore classes, but not enough to believe that the 'Cats will earn home ice and then a trip to the Garden (followed by a seed in the NCAAs.) Not this year. (And as disappointing as that would be, I'd be OK with that -- as I stated earlier, it has been an impressive and unequalled run for the last 15 years.)

Hey, there's always hope that the team catches fire, rather than crashes and burns. I'd rather see them start cool and end hot, but, unless things change in a quantum fashion, they'll probably fizzle out in February.

Re: 2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

Figure we are week from starting the season up again and get this kicked off again, plus sick of reading the recruiting thread and someone’s(not a UNH fan by the way) gibberish and look at me I know everything about 18 year old boys comments, hate to see that thread turn into that after all the hard work CHC puts into keeping us updated on the recruits.
So the first question is what is going to go on in net to start the 2nd half? I think we might see a rotation and open competition to see who the starter should be, at least that is what I hope. Will see if it’s a 2 or 3 man battle. Anyone know any word on Speelman and how much longer he will be out?

Re: 2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

If we make it far enough it might be but I'm guessing that it's unlikely.

Does it include post season games? If so, that's really unfair to the teams that don't make the post season, or those that, unlike Michigan, don't play 40 regular season games....

Re: 2011-2012 UNH Wildcats

Seriously. This MV kid must feel good about all the attention, good for him. Let's keep in in the spirit of the season. Go 'cats!

It doesn't help that his father or stalker keeps posting in that thread ;) I know I am looking forward to getting back to the action on the ice this weekend!!

Hes just a troll, trouble seems to pop up in every thread he posts in. Our recruit thread has been very active lately so he has found a place to get what he craves most. Attention.
