Horrible news about McCarthy. He's definitely a top 3 forward with Brickley and Stalberg. Hopefully he goes for the redshirt and post graduate year. I still say they are going to be much improved next year with an excellent incoming class - possibly top 10 nationally - and they lose almost nothing to graduation this year.

But this year just got a lot darker.
Serious question (not trolling) ... does anyone know how the medical redshirt works for hockey? I'm wondering if McCarthy might have played too many games already?

Not positive, but I believe the number is somewhere between 15 and 20% of the schedule or 5-8 games. I'm not sure when the clock starts (beginning of the season or first game played by the athlete).

Thanks ... I've been curious about that in a few cases around Hockey East the past few years, but haven't been able to find something set in stone.

According to the Burlington Free Press, McCarthy's eligible to red-shirt. Follow this link and scroll down until you get to an entry titled "Hockey Cats' McCarthy Out for the Season." http://blogs.burlingtonfreepress.com/oncampus/

Well let's see if we can take advantage of Milan being out.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Tally up another for the "L" column. We have got to start WINNING games. I'm a little tired of hearing "we took steps in the right direction," "we're making strides," or "we played really well 5 on 5." I understand that's about all we have to hang our hats on right now, but how 'bout we just win?

I watched the first couple of periods of BC/Notre Dame last night since I don't have NESN in Atlanta. It was the dedication game for their new arena, which looked absolutely amazing!!! How do we expect to compete with BC, BU, and ND when they have state of the art facilities and we have the Gutt? Unless there's some circumstance giving us a tie to a recruit, there's really no reason for a good player choose us over other schools.

Sorry, I'm a little bummed about UVM hockey right now. :(

OMG, we stink! Same problems as last year, but maybe worse. No defense, shaky goaltending, and not a single player who could put the puck in the ocean if their life depended on it. We're just a couple of years removed from having what looked to be a promising program. What happened?

I watched it on the computer, and yeah it was ugly. Flashes of quality, mixed with lots of really bad play. It was very embarrassing listening to the NU announcers calling our team "clueless" Talent is definitely there, just not jelling as a team.
I would not want to have Kevin's job.

:(

I think that we have actually recruited well. For some reason they just aren't working anymore. We just get out hustled and out worked. Not sure why, and someone will undoubtly correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems to have declined when the athletic trainer was replaced. The name is escaping me at the moment.

Either way, this team just isn't motivated right now. That lies on Sneddon. They have forgotten how to block shots, battle in the corners, and just plain out work a team. Madore has been shaky all year. Time to start sitting guys who just want to coast around the ice and are underperforming. Play all the freshmen, can't be any worse...

I have mentioned this many times............They miss Paul Goodman, but Paul did not do a single rep, or minute on the cycle. He is a a great strength and conditioning coach but THE PLAYER has to do the work.

Vermont Hockey: 260 days without a Hockey East win.

Tim Thomas is not walking through that door.
Martin St. Louis is not walking through that door.
Viktor Stalberg is not walking through that door.

This is going to be an awesome season, I can feel it!

Paul may not have done a rep, but he helped establish an attitude. Alot of these guys get attitudes in the weight room, before the game through the pre game workouts that Paul put them through, and post game work outs. It huge. Paul is in the NHL and UVM has had three stregnth and conditioning guys since them. Have you seen this years verison of the Cats? They are tiny. I don't know what he is doing now, but they are not nearly as big as they were, in fact I know some guys are smaller.

This team needs to dig deep among themselves and hold themselves accountable. If they aren't embarassed that their a joke, then I don't care who the coach is, they won't win. And, if they aren't embarassed and can't get themselves out of the rut, then the coaches failed to correctly judge the type of kid they recruited.

I believe in the staff, but can't take much more before I tilt the other way. Wonder what the AD is thinking?:mad::mad:

Trivia question: Which school is the only Hockey East school not to play in the NCAA's this millennium?

Trivia question: Which school swept UVM in the HE quarter finals in Burlington a couple of seasons ago?

What did that get them? Your program is slightly more significant than alabama-huntsville, and even they've made the NCAAs this millenium, maybe even twice
