2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

It seems getting a couple of bodies back from injuries helped (Brickley and Paolitta). And getting a couple of saves for a change. save % was a touch over .900 for a change

Good to see the young guys scoring too

I remain optomistic for next year. Look at UML and Colgate. both bottom of the barrel last year and both very strong this year. There is no reason why UVM cannot do that next year. On paper the team will be much stronger next after losing little and another good incoming class

I see Brickley leaving after his Junior year - in which I expect him to light up the league playing a full season and with a strong cast of forwards.

We can't come away with anything less than a tie in the season series with UNH, which I don't think has happened (?) since joining HE. Let's keep the good play going--it'll have an impact on how we start next season.

Actual this will be(most likely)the only series we dont lose this year.

E. Thomas Sullivan will be named the new president of UVM. He has a legal background and there's nothing in the BFP article to indicate he has any interest in athletics. Although I really wouldn't expect there to be even if he did. After all, he'll be the president, not the athletic director. The good news (maybe) is that he comes to us from another hockey school, the University of Minnesota. Hopefully, he has a keen interest in hockey and was a fan of the Gophers. Interesting that the Gophers will be on campus next fall for two games at The Gut.

Two things:
1) Heisenberg site doesn't necessarily rank the players from best to worst...also, he's not there to watch the players so I wouldn't put too much stock into where the goalies are ranked.
If I'm not mistaken, the players at the top of each league are ranked as the best by Chris. I had this conversation with him a while back because I was curious as well. After the first few players though, the rest are just plugged in, and when a new player is added (someone he didn't have on his list, but made a commitment), he just adds them in wherever.

I feel really bad for Sneddon, I think the year's failure finally came out last night in frustration. Looking forward to senior night, but I think it's time to put a bow on this season, and look forward to a better 2012-13

BU fan whose first trip to the Gut was last night. Not much of a game but I love the atmosphere and the building itself. I want my next trip to be when there's something on the line.

Glad you enjoyed your trip to The Gut but, unfortunately, you didn't get the full experience. The number of empty seats is a testament to just how bad the team is. When the Cats are playing well and facing an opponent the stature of BU, the place will be sold out and rocking. The atmosphere can be electric. Hopefully, it can be like that again soon. Come back, you'll love it more.

Agreed!!!! Wish tonight's game was the last of the year. This is a tough season to have to finish up with two at BC:(

Looks like the women's team had yet another disappointing season. I know they are new to D1 but it's time to pick it up a little.....A year to forget for VT hockey all around.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Hope Ted gets an update on Brickley. That looked like a nasty injury. Definitely concussed.
Me thinks the officiating crew may get called to the principals office on Monday. Letting play go on while a player is unconscious is terrible. Even if there is a rule that allows play, you have to make a judgement call based on safety. Let alone missing a blatant penalty. just pathetic.

I agree. Regarding the last penalty they had on Friday, the commentators said it was a "bench" penalty, but didn't offer any further explanation. As the UVM player was skating to the penalty box to serve it, they showed Sneddon clapping heartily (and sarcastically I'm sure). Anyone know what that was about? I'm guessing Sneddon got onto the refs about some of their calls, and was called for a penalty himself.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Yes, I have to believe the penalty was on Kevin. He was very frustrated by the way they were calling the game. And was extremely animated in his communicating with the refs. ( I have a great view) So much so, I personally thought he was tossed. I can't blame him. Generally I don't bash refs on this board, but both nights it was pathetic.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

I'm not sure Sneddon should have called that time out when BU went 6 on 5 and the faceoff in his zone. His team had controlled the 3rd period to that point and calling a time-out only lets a team with confidence down as adrenalin drains away. Usually, players get hesitant and start thinking
'what did he say' rather than playing instinctively.UVM wins control and blind-passes to BU.

If you guys wanna go ahead and sweep BC this weekend, it'd be much appreciated.

Any word on Brickley? Did anybody see what exactly happened or is there any video

Thought we had the better of the play for good portions of the game last night. Difference was the age-old problem that continually plagues UVM teams--BC was able to put the puck in the net and we weren't. Plus, BC getting a couple of soft goals didn't help the cause at all. Looks like just another loss when you see the 5-1 score. Hopefully, we can play the same way tonight only finish off some of those opportunities.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

Sorry for the intrusion but watched the game last night. I am truly perplexed when watching Madore struggle. He used to be a stud!!! In my opinion, 3 soft goals and an empty netter against. Not to mention the quick whistle by a ref who is in poor position and blows the play dead when actually the puck is still live and put in the net. Kinda sums up your season in a nut shell.

I was impressed with Montagna up front. Good luck tonight!!!!!

Thanks. Agree that last night was kind of a microcosm of our season, with the exception that there were some games at the beginning of the season when we truly were dreadful. Not the case last night--we played really well and took it to BC for much of the game.

Also agree that we have some good freshmen, including Montagna, who have gotten a ton of experience this year and will come back stronger next year. Markison and Reynolds (who wasn't in the lineup last night) are even more impressive IMO.

Re: 2011-12 Vermont Season Thread (Vezina & Conn Smyth trophy edition)

While I'm not saying it was a game changing call but does BU or BC ever get a raw deal on a call versus us?

Final score should be 4-2, doesnt mean much except maybe a little more confidence going into tonight.

And I agree the largest problem VT has is finsihing, big play when we had the breakaway and didnt put it away
which would have tied the game. Another A for effrot but F for results.

BC had a game tying goal disallowed about 5 years ago up there. Replay clearly showed it was tipped below the crossbar but Scott Hansen wouldn't allow it. Bertagna brought the officiating team hame and sent a new crew up the next night.
