2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I was really impressed with the gophers PK this weekend. They had a fortress set up on the blue line and the Huskies struggled to even gain the offensive zone. When they were lucky enough to gain the zone, the gophers applied in your face aggressive pressure and forced turnovers. Virtually no passing lanes available.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I got to believe that the Gophers are getting that ranking based on sheer talent. When the Gophers decide to play they really can beat anyone.

Having said that they don't deserve to be in the top five...they just have the potential to be there.

Yeah, sadly you could very easily make the argument that they are underachieving this year. Now even I would say that's highly unfair when February hasn't even started yet, but given the non-conference record has concluded until the NCAA's it is a valid point of view.

With nothing guaranteed at this point the next month should be very telling.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

The voting polls mean nothing to the team and coaches. It's just a fan/media thing. I am just glad to see them playing good team defense and hopefully Saturday's game will ignite some scoring outside of the first line. When we get scoring from more than one line, we are pretty tough to beat.

PS - A few of you guys need to calm down in other threads.

If you're referring to me, I agree. Someone hit a nerve with me and I reacted. Picking on me is one thing, but picking on my friends really sets me off. And what Chuck did was pretty uncalled for (he admitted as much). That said, I really need to learn to walk away. Not worth it and I acknowledge that.

Meh, I just think the Gophers had their mid-season hiccups at the wrong time, during non-conference play. I think they are every bit as good of a team as UMD, who are just having their hiccups now.

The Gophers have only lost one game by more than one goal, have never been shutout, are averaging just over 2 goals per game allowed, and have the second highest scoring offense in college hockey (3.72 goals per game).

They are a Top 5 team RIGHT NOW, but haven't played like it all season (and more importantly at the wrong times), which has hurt them in the Pairwise.

Dude, the team is leading the friggin conference...if that is underachieving in any argument then you are talking to the wrong people.

The PWR will even itself out if the Gophs stay in the 1 or 2 spot in the conference. (having a 2 seed at the X is not going to kill them even if the NCAA puts UMD there as well) Right now it is their TUC record that is hurting them (they are 8-7 thanks to SCCC falling off) and that is going to flucuate every weekend until the end of the year. But since the PWR only matters one day (as you and your cohort so love to tell us) there is no use getting all bent out of shape about it.

Yes, they are leading the conference. But their and the entire WCHA's non-conference record is abysmal. Add that with basically .500 hockey since the beginning of November and you do not have the right recipe.

Winning cures all. And yes the PWR doesn't matter until that one day. But, no one's getting bent out of shape. Just reflecting reality. Going into the season I was thinking that the Gophers would rock the non-conference schedule and come in at the 3-4 spot in the conference. Instead they blew the non-conference and are likely to come in the 1-2 spot in the conference. Maybe they'll get a banner out of it. I'd take that in a heartbeat.

I think I already said they can beat UMD in a head to head match up and that they have the best talent in the country. On any weekend, this Gopher team can be a top five team as they were this last weekend.

Unfortunately they weren't 7 of the previous 9 weekends with the MSMU weekend hardly a good measure. Teams are judged based on consistent results. Let's see if they continue to have the fire they had this weekend...if so, they will indeed be deserve to be a top five team again.

Consistancy is certainly the biggest concern. They've been pretty consistant the last few series even when splitting, but I wont deny that the biggest concern down the stretch is BSU and UW, when it should be @DU and @UNO. The up and down play has to stop for any of us to be convinced they're ready for a frozen 4.

Being atop the WCHA this season is little different than leading the ECACHL most years. The conference is almost that ****ty.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

I don't understand this #1 ranking talk. They've played .500 hockey for months and then finally barely swept the walking wounded team from SCSU. If that garners a #1 I don't get it. Especially when the WCHA is the worst of the big 3 conferences this year.

I'll give you credit for finally getting over 50% with your team in first in the conference and first in polls.
However, in all your ranting about where the Gophs are in the poles, you need to consider the other teams as well. UMD just gave up 9 straight goals to MTU after a weekend where they barely beat Alabama Huntsville in both games. They aren't exactly on fire. And teams like BU, BC, ND, MI and other have been less than consistent in their play, in stretches all year, just like the Gophs. The number one rank is as much a reflection of that fact that there isn't one, or a few, truly dominant teams this year as it is of the skill level of this Gopher team. Sure, they haven't been that consistent, but neither has anyone else lately. Take a close look at the other teams and tell me if any of them clearly are above the Gophs. I think when you look at it from that perspective, there are about 5 teams all playing about the same, and the Gophs just happen to be the one chosen this week. Who cares about them Pohls anyways?

No it isnt, it is down, but not that down. I would say it is on par with the CCHA most years. (top heavy)

As of now there are 3 teams in with two being the first teams out. Yeah that sounds pretty crappy to me  (and since Union is in the Top 16 that technically means North Dakota is in as well at 16 I think) And it is just as likely that teams like Northern Michigan or Notre Dame will drop out as it is that Denver will. The CCHA has 6 teams in as we speak...want to bet how long that will last?

But yeah, we are the EZAC this year...

Union is not in the AHA, therefore, UND is out.

Some people need things to gripe about. Minus Duluth no team in the entirety of NCAA Hockey has been lights out, and well they pretty much pizzed down their leg last weekend after that rough series with perennial powerhouse UAH. (not to mention got swept at home by an "underachieving" Gopher squad ;) ) Taking into account that the polls don't matter, and the fact that the teams ahead of the Gophers lost while the Gophers won why shouldnt the Gophs move up? Personally I dont even look but I do love reading people get bent out of shape about it.

Things will even themselves out they always do. Of the teams in the Top Ten I have seen there isnt one of them that outclasses the Gophers right now so who cares.

edit: my mistake on Union...but in my defense who the F is Union :p

Keep tilting at windmills Sancho Doo!

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Someone has to fight the Windmills. Heck the Minnesota State Senate by not appointing Anderson as PUC chair has taken up the Windmill fight. I have people behind me.

Did you not pay attention last season at all?

Ylae, Union, and RPI made the tourney. IIRC, they were seeded #1, #2, and #4 respectively. UMD = Ylae, MN = Union, and Denver = RPI in the current pairwise, more or less.

And how the **** can you forget about #26 Union? That's been a uscho meme for quite some time! :p
