Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Notes On First Don Lucia Radio Show

The first Don Lucia Show of the hockey season aired on ESPN1500 on Monday night. Joe Anderson, co-host of a weekly morning show with Judd Zulgad, and Wally Shaver, the longtime voice of Gophers hockey, were on with Lucia.

The players are in shape, Lucia said, adding everyone ran their 200-yard dashes 16 times in the times allotted to them. And they did it on*the first try.
Lucia said captain Taylor Matson really pushed the players hard in September with a lot of skating.

All the freshmen played junior hockey, some more than one season, Lucia said. So in age this team is not that young, but*the*first-year players*obviously lack college experience.

TALENT ABOUNDS IN YOUNG, OLD
One of the freshmen is Ben Marshall, a former Mahtomedi standout who played in the USHL last season. “Ben Marshall can come in and help us right away, especially on the power play,” Lucia said.

There will be growing pains for young players.

A key veteran back is senior goalie Kent Patterson. That is probably the most important position in hockey, Lucia said, if Patterson plays well like he did last season the Gophers will have a chance to win every game.

STRESSING PK
Specialty teams are really important, Lucia said, and the Gophers have put a lot of emphasis on them, especially the penalty kill. He said the Gophers gave up too many goals late on their penalty kills.

Lucia said the 2011-12 teams looks a little quicker and deeper that last season’s team, and has real committed players. “They are extremely enjoyable to be around each and every day so far,” he said.

The player mix is a little different. There are five to 10 players who should develop into real good college players, but*may not translate into high-end NHL players.
UMD won an NCAA title with a roster full of good college players last season, Lucia said.

Seems like the Gophers are copying the Bulldogs’ recruiting strategy.

TWO HELD OUT OF EXHIBITION
Sophomore defenseman Nate Schmidt suffered a minor injury about seven to 10 days ago, Lucia said, so that’s why he did not play in the Gophers’ 3-0 exhibition victory over British Columbia on Sunday. He is expected to practice on Tuesday.

Senior forward Nick Larson tweaked something, Lucia said, and was held out of the exhibition as a precaution.

Lucia said he saw a lot of good signs from the Gophers in the exhibition: “We were able to transition the puck quickly,*up the rink ...*we played with good speed ... we played physical.

"A guy like Jake Hansen, you could see*the tempo and speed he was playing with. … We*are going to have some*good depth. We can keep coming at people and hopefully wear them down.”

Hansen, a senior right wing, had a goal and two assists against the Thunderbirds.

Lucia said 15 to 16 freshmen and sophomores will play when Gophers face Sacred Heart on Friday and Saturday at Mariucci Arena.

"Getting the special teams ready*that is going to be the big challenge this week as we head into the first weekend of games," Lucia said.

“[Sacred Heart] is a good opener for us,” he said.

Mike Guentzel is back on Lucia’s staff as an associate head coach. “I knew it would be a seamless transition,” Lucia said. “We spent a lot of time together. We had a lot of success together.”

Lucia said Guentzel is a Gophers alum and has a lot of passion for the program.

Because you posted the full text from another site rather than a link to it? (Possible copywrite issue?)

Probably, but strange since I quoted the whole thing and said where it was from. I used to do it like that all of last year as well, oh well links will work just the same.

for the first time in my 29 years i just hear a radio add for gopher hockey tickets
does anyone know the reasoning for this? are they having a tough time selling tickets?
never would i have imagined that the gophs would actually have to advertise

First time in 35 years I've heard that either. I assume it is related partially to the recent season ticket changes (starting next year seats will cost at least $1,200 a ticket) and partially to the lackluster on-ice product the last few years. They aren't the only hockey game in town and with the poor economy I am sure some people are opting to go with a wait and see approach before committing that much coin to season tickets. I'm not too worried about it.

It is the new season ticket program. It has basically gotten rid of the waiting list.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Now that we have gone through all this realignment stuff I personally would rather just start playing the Big Ten this year. I still feel a little sense of anger towards DU and UND and I would just as soon not see the Gophers play them ever again. I guess I have already moved on. Why wait? ;)

Not me. I'm going to enjoy the next two seasons as much as I can. These are teams we may not play after next season and rivalries and road trips I will greatly miss.

I bet you are younger than me. I remember when Michigan and Michigan State left the WCHA for the CCHA and I was heart broken. Other rivalries will take the place of UND etc.

I'm with Wes on this one, I will miss playing NoDak and Denver both. I will enjoy the WCHA, the top conference in College Hockey, for the next 2 years and be sad when the B1G starts.

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Pride on Ice returns . . to the toilet where it has been the last several years. ;)

Seriously though, what the heck is wrong with the U of M athletic department?

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

You really want to open that can of worms ;)

All jokes aside, The U of M is a really big school. The hockey team has been way below its own standards last several years, the Football team is one of the worst D1 teams playing, and the Basketball team even with Tubby Smith is very average at best. What the heck is going on over there?

Hope you're not a SCSU womens hockey fan. Last season they won a grand total of one game. What's up with that?

Re: 2011-12 Minnesota Season Thread (Pride On Ice Returns!)

Not a big college football or basketball fan, but I think there are a number of factors that have effected the hockey program:

- John Hill. He was a poor coach and recruiter.
- 1-year departures really set them back. Every program loses players early, but losing players after only a year really hurts. The Gophers had a rash of those (Johnson, Leddy, etc..). Not only do you lose their high-end talent, but you're then forced to accelerate the timetable on other players to fill those spots (Ness, Gardiner, etc..)
- Lack of leadership behind the bench and on the ice.

Pfft, everyone knows that Maturi is really a Wisconsin mole!

I bet I am younger than you, but I also haven't been a life long Gopher Hockey addict like some of you guys.;)
