2010 Team USA Olympic Team - The Youth Movement

Re: 2010 Team USA Olympic Team - The Youth Movement

You could be right on Erik Johnson, i haven't seen him play a lot in the NHL either and there is more then just numbers. McBain, Goligoski and Gilroy along with Bogosian are probebly the future blue line for team USA down the road, we will just have to wait an see. I forgot about Gilroy, he has unbelievable potential. We could be loaded on the Blueline in 2014 with Gilbert, Suter, Bogosian, Goligoski, McBain, Johnson, Gilroy, Johnson Exc.

What troubles me most about the D-man the USA has, then you look at canada, we don't match up as far as scoring goes. We are just completely over-matched. Maybe the USA will be more balanced with a mix of stay at home d-Man and puck moving offensive D-men and that could be a good thing.
Unfortunetly it seems like we are always overmatched by the Canadians.

mid to late 90's i thought we had better teams then canada... but lately that is true. Miller or Thomas will have to be sick nasty i think...

Does anybody really care? Call me old school but the pro's in the Olympics is just wrong. I loved the world cup of hockey where they played on NHL ice with NHL rules, but the NHL in the Olympics does nothing for me.

The Vancouver Olympics will be played on NHL-sized rinks and have NHL refs, although the rules are still international.

As for the pros in the Olympics, I don't agree with you there. That pro toothpaste is already out of the tube and has been for years.

The best players should be able to play for their countries in any sport. Amateurism is a bygone relic from the days when only "gentlemen" could afford to train all year, and working class athletes were relegated to pauper status because they could not afford to keep up. To make matters worse, Soviet Bloc countries were sending state sponsored "amateurs" that were ostensibly professionals and made a mockery of the amateur rules. The Soviet Hockey team, for example were "pros" in all but name. They were given Army officers' salaries (but no army duties other than play hockey), trained together 11 months a year full time and were getting better benefits than the general Soviet population (apartments, cars, etc.). We were very lucky to beat them in 1980.

If the NHL takes its players out of the Olympics in 2014 (which is a good possibility because the Olympics are in Sochi, Russia and becuase insurance is getting too expensive) we'll be sending a team of minor leaguers and college players to play against full time pros from the European Leagues, which will break their seasons for the Olympics. It will be a second rate tournament, IMHO.

The olympics to me is more about the individual sports and the odd team sports. I don't want to see NHL or NBA players in the olympics. It's not a big deal either way, but I won't lose sleep if they don't play any more.

I guess thats a way to look at it but what's next, the ryder cup has to go to amateurs too. Its pointless for the USA and canada to pull pr's out of the olympics because the other countries won't do it.

This whole situation bothers me really. Those players have earned the right to represent there country. We go back to amateurs and you can kiss a medal goodbye for canada or USA ever again.

I personally enjoy the olympics, i'm a little upset that it won't be played on the olympic sheet, i think that would add a element to the games that you don't normally see in north america. We see 100 plus NHL games every year,it would be nice to see something a little different every 4 years.

I get confused why people don't get excited about the games just because its professionals. Its still representing your country, its still us against them. Its not like 1980 where there are political issues with it, but its still US vs Canada or Canada vs Russia and those are darn exciting games to watch at any level. I was at the WJC in Ottawa last winter and let me tell you, the start of that Canada vs USA game was UNBELIEVABLE! Everyone was so jacked up, the flag going around the arena, and the noise in there was as loud as anything i have ever heard before, i'm talking football, anything,it was defining and Vancouver will be the same way. It will be great for the sport and if USA makes a run at gold it could really change hockey in the states once again... And it won't matter if its pro's or amateurs on the ice its going to be a great event.

Blake Wheeler is another name that could possibly make it, he was great in his first year as a pro. 81GP, 21G, 24A, 45 PTS, and +36 :O
