Travel between Windsor and Detroit is quite easy if you have your Passport or as I did was get the "enhanced" license. I was over in CA last month and had no problems at immigration. The hang-up was with paying the toll. The tunnel was backed up half way going (Sat. noon) and the bridge was quick coming back on Monday rush hour, but the finishing of construction at the bridge caused a bottle neck. That will all be done by March. The tunnel comes out at the Ren Cen and is about 1.5 mi from Ford Fld.
I'm staying home near A2 and plan to commute. If it were to become a problem then I'll move into my daughter's flat near Wayne State. I'm thinking of using her as a taxi to save on parking.
There are a lot of things to do in the area. The DIA, and across the street is the Historical Museum. Go to Belle Isle drive around and then you can claim you drove a F1 course.

I really appreciate this thread. I've been here for just over a year and don't get out much. If I ever get some free time, I've now got a list of things to do and see.

I am not certain about cabs, but there is a bus that goes from downtown Detroit across the tunnel into Windsor. You have to exit the bus before you can cross the border, then get back on, but it's pretty straightforward.
If you're asking whether Ford Field is close to Windsor, no not really. Loooong walk.

I would suggest staying in Troy at one of the hotels on Big Beaver. It's a 15 minute drive down I-75 to Detroit.
As mentioned by myself and several others. The greektown casino hotel is fantastic. You're pretty much right in the middle of all the excitement.
Remember that the Tigers home opener will be the same time as the FF. It's the biggest party in the midwest and those who attend the festivities will not be disappointed. It's basically Michigan/Detroit's mardi gras. There are usually about 250,000 people that go downtown just to party on opening day.

That was through Marriott's web site (www.marriott.com). I just checked again, and that $90 rate is no longer there, but the $129 is. $110 if you have AAA. I wasn't fibbing, I promise!

Thanks for all of the suggestions on where to stay! Windsor was considered and rejected as my mom is concerned about border hassles, but we might reconsider. We've also considered Ann Arbor, but a nearer suburb could be better. Suburbia might not be exciting, but as you may have guessed we don't have such high expectations...
That's probably a good slogan, because that's as optimistic as I can bring myself to be. Maybe we will check out a bit of the historic stuff... we kind of have a mixed group with three generations, some of whom are usually just more interested in drinking, but if there's actually something to see than I kind of like to see it.

There is a large garage directly across the street. They charge $10 during Tigers games, but goodness knows what they will ask for during the Frozen Four.

Just for those that who have not heard...some of Detroit's finest business families are teaming up to host the events that surround the hockey game this year.
Bill Ford Jr. and Christopher Illitch will be the co-chairs of the event. There is quite a bit of buzz down here right now. There are not a lot of people downtown that have much knowledge about college hockey beyond the regular hockey hot spot bars for games at The Joe. However people I know in other businesses are very anxious for this event, and I am hearing some great things that are being planned to welcome our out of town guests.
Just for those that who have not heard...some of Detroit's finest business families are teaming up to host the events that surround the hockey game this year.

Just so everybody knows, Tigers' opening day is Friday. It is practically a holiday in Michigan. Saturday's game is practically the same. Dowtown will be slammed all weekend. Parking will be tough to come by and lots will charge upward of $30 to park Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Good luck getting into the bars. If you are looking for bars/restaurants in the areas inside/outside Detroit, post your "tastes" and I'll see if I can help. Been going to college hockey at the Joe for over 20 years. I spend a lot of time in the city (Casinos, Tigers, Lions, Employment, Red Wings, Opera House, Fox, Fillmore, Cobo, RenCen, Greektown), as well as all areas around Detroit and Windsor as well, as I grew up here. Just trying to lend a hand.
