2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

The 2010 Census is coming. Questionnaires will be arriving in the mail early next week. This year's Census is the shortest form ever, asking only 10 questions and taking 10 minutes to complete.

I work with Census data all the time at my job, and it's of vital importance for everyone to fill out the form and send it back. Doing so also saves money, because if you don't fill it out then the Census Bureau has to send someone to come to your house.

Either way, keep an eye out for the 2010 form, arriving on or about March 15.

Re: 2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

I got my form yesterday. I am going to fill it out incorrectly in hopes of increasing the number of people in my state and therefore helping us get more funding/resources. :D

I'm still trying to figure out the rationale for spending $42M to mail out something saying that you'll get something else in the mail.

It's important to kill trees to save the Earth.

The research shows that the vast majority of people are simply unaware of the upcoming Census, and these advance letters actually help improve the response rate by 6-12 points. Each percentage point improvement in the response rate saves $85 million, since it means the Bureau doesn't have to send someone out to knock on those doors.

Private sector polling firms find the same thing - sending people advanced notice that they'll be contacted increases response rates tremendously. The big difference, of course, is that if a polling firm can't get in touch with someone, they just call someone else - the Census is obligated by the Constitution to count everyone, and that means going door to door. It's extremely labor-intensive and expensive. The letter saves money - it's just that sometimes you have to spend money to save it.

I find it hard to believe that people don't know its coming or will just disregard something that has CENSUS on it, but people do tend to be oblivious to the world outside of American Idol.

I guess we all shouldn't send the form back to help with unemployment ;)

My wife and I asked that exact question when we got the notice in the mail the other day. A shame money is spent so poorly by the feds.

Nice explanation. You won't convince the Repubs though. They'll be hammering on about this waste of money throughout the process.

Re: 2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

I'm sure it's true, but to a normal person it still doesn't make sense. Who cares if you know about the Census, when you receive the actual form, you'll know about it. How does getting a letter saying you'll be receiving the form help response rate? People are so freaking stupid.

In that case, someone should call the waaaaaaaaaaaaambulance. I wonder what kind of stink they'd put up if their insurance didn't cover that?

Re: 2010 Census - Fill it out, send it back

What would happen if you only want to answer the number of people in your household? Will they still come to your door later?

'Census'? Isn't that the Toyota hybrid with the brakes problem?

I extract/mine data all day long. Complete and accurate data for our business is essential. Please, folks, fill out the form

It's illegal.
