2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Does Bert finally get in? Does Tim Raines make up any more ground? Do sports writers keep coming up with terrible ballots?

Well yes, they do actually.

just mailed Hall of Fame ballot, beating deadline yet again. voted for alomar, dawson, larkin, parker, morris & mattingly

This year's eligible players for election are:

Andre Dawson
Bert Blyleven
Lee Smith
Jack Morris
Tim Raines
Mark McGwire
Alan Trammell
Dave Parker
Don Mattingly
Dale Murphy
Harold Baines
Roberto Alomar*
Kevin Appier*
Ellis Burks*
Andrés Galarraga*
Pat Hentgen*
Mike Jackson*
Eric Karros*
Ray Lankford*
Barry Larkin*
Edgar Martinez*
Fred McGriff*
Shane Reynolds*
David Segui*
Robin Ventura*
Todd Zeile*

*- First year eligible

Andre Dawson was the guy who had most votes and didn't make it in last year. Roberto Alomar is the only new guy that seems to be a lock to get in. Edgar Martinez presents the case of whether or not a guy who was a DH his whole career should get credit for that. Barry Larkin is the only other new guy that I think has a really good shot at getting in sooner than not as he was, by far, the best shortstop in the National League for a long stretch of time.

What's stunning is that the BBWAA has more guys like Heyman than they do guys who seem to get it. Dave Parker, nice player - not a hall of famer. Jack Morris pitched a few games in some really big spots and was a gutsy SOB... Not a hall of famer though. Don Mattingly was my hero as a kid growing up and he was incredible to see when he was healthy... But he's not a hall of famer.

This year is going to be really interesting to see how things turn out but I think Dawson will sneak in and Bert will, again, be on the outside looking in - unfortunately.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

My ballot would consist of Dawson, Blyleven, Raines, McGwire, and Alomar. I could be persuaded on Martinez and Larkin.

I'll take a wild guess and say that among the newbies, at least Alomar, Martinez, Larkin, McGriff, and maybe Galarraga get to come back next year.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Dawson was an out machine, no thanks.

Blyleven, Raines, McGwire, Alomar, Trammell, Larkin, Martinez.

The rest should never be in, especially that over-rated Jack Morris.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

GLM said and my notes in the margins:

This year's eligible players for election are:

Andre Dawson - squeaks in... marginal HOFer though I loved watching him.
Bert Blyleven - I agree with GLM... outside looking in.
Lee Smith - No
Jack Morris - No
Tim Raines - Maybe
Mark McGwire - He might make it, but I hope not. Steroids baby. Steroids.
Alan Trammell - Maybe
Dave Parker - Nope
Don Mattingly - Nope
Dale Murphy - I like this guy, but if Mattingly isn't good enough, neither is he.
Harold Baines - Nope.
Roberto Alomar* - He's in.
Kevin Appier* - A wha? Hmmm HELL NO.
Ellis Burks* - Nope.
Andrés Galarraga* - Nope
Pat Hentgen* - See Appier
Mike Jackson* - See Appier
Eric Karros* - NOPE
Ray Lankford* - Intriguing...nope.
Barry Larkin* - I'm going to go out on a limb and say he's in.
Edgar Martinez* - Nope, but he'll get votes.
Fred McGriff* - Nope.
Shane Reynolds* - No
David Segui* - No
Robin Ventura* - No
Todd Zeile* - See Appier

*- First year eligible

I guess I only have Alomar as a lock. Dawson and Larkin as squeaking in. I'd like to see Trammell and perhaps Raines get in. I'd like McGwire NOT to get in, but he'll probably make it. And that will set precedent in allowing Barry Bonds into the HOF.

I also like Lee Smith, but I can't see him getting into the HOF either.

And, even though it is far too late and never will happen: Roger Maris to the Hall.

I wish I could say the same for Pete Rose, but cheaters out.

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

Maris was never worthy of making the hall. What makes him worthy now?

Surprisingly looking at Appier's body of work he was much better than most people give him credit for.

But again, he pitched in Kansas City for a good portion of his career. Not Hall-Worthy, but not shabby.

Ok, but there are others on there that defy logic... like Zeile, for example. He was good, sure, but HOF worthy? Are you kidding me?

Nobody is saying he's HOF-worthy; players automatically go on the ballot if they meet a certain set of criteria that are essentially just longevity-based.

Right, they're automatically eligible and then almost instantly off the ballot the following year, save for an occasional stupid pity vote. Unless they get 5% of the ballot they're gone.

The fact that some writers burn votes for some terrible people while not voting for actual, legitimate players is what makes the process a joke.

Do they really "burn votes"? I thought there wasn't any limit on the number of players a writer could vote for.

When you look at the rest of their ballot... You could make the argument that they're jerking people around.

I guess that's possible. I'm just saying, there's no reason why a given writer can't vote for all the guys they think are deserving, and then also go and give an "atta boy" vote to a Todd Zeile or Ellis Burks for whatever reasons writers have to give votes to guys who obviously aren't going to make it.

The moral of the story... modern PEDs? BAAAAAAD!
Greenies? YAAAAY!

Re: 2010 Baseball Hall of Fame Class

I feel dumber after reading Heyman's twitter as he tries to explain his reasoning.

Jack Morris was 5-2 in All-Star Games? What the hell does that even mean?

edit: Wait, Morris was only in 5 All-Star Games. Does "AS games" stand for something else, or is he even crazier/a worse typer than I thought?

One of his arguments to Jonah Keri about Clemente vs. Raines (that was a comparison made to a degree) was that Clemente made 12 All-Star games.

The f-ck? How do all-star appearances mean dick for modern players? The fan vote is a joke.

Not sure if you read it but last week (or maybe two weeks ago?) Joe Posnanski made a pretty fair comparison of Raines to Clemente.

I'm a pretty avid reader of Posnanski's stuff - he's a great baseball writer. I didn't want to crack open the Clemente-Raines comparisons so abruptly like that for some of the folks who'll show up here later on and flip a sh-t about it.

I dunno all the rules about greenies and such, or if there was any testing. However, if you can prove that certain players used PEDs those years where it was against the rules (actually against the rules, not morally wrong, or whatever, like andro at one point, for example), those stats and those stats only should not be considered.

morally wrong? They have been ILLEGAL for quite some time...hasn't BREAKING THE LAW always been against the rules?
