I just hope we dont get any hurricanes in the gulf where the oil spill is. That would be a huge ecological disaster!
Beyond that, I hope everyone on the east coast stays safe if there are hurricanes. I work in the generator industry, so for me hurricanes are good news because they mean more money in my pocket (overtime) but I feel for people who live on the coast and lose everything in a hurricane.
As we say in the industry, we like storms that knock out power but dont knock down buildings or cause loss of life.
That would be good news for me, but really bad news for anyone in the path of those storms.I can see a storm hitting the GOM this year, maybe two. Plus, it should be a hyperactive season with near record temps in the atlantic and the colapse of el nino. The eddy that is about to break off in the GOM could cause a storm to intensify like what we saw with Katrina and Rita if a storm follows a similar path. It's just not a good omen for this hurricane season.

I suspect that they dont really know exactly what would happen if a hurricane passed over the oil spill, considering that I dont think its ever happened before.A hurricane could also disperse the oil out of plumes as well. Which may help.

I could be mistaken, but Im not aware of an instance where a hurricane passed over a major oil spill.Really? There must have been plenty of small gulf spills before. Also, you figure they have to model contingencies when they apply for safety permits. BTW, who regulates building a rig in international waters? (The answer is probably not going to be good.)
TROPICAL WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS TPC/NATIONAL HURRICANE CENTER MIAMI FL
200 AM EDT MON JUN 14 2010
FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC...CARIBBEAN SEA AND THE GULF OF MEXICO...
1. A LARGE LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM LOCATED ABOUT 1025 MILES WEST-SOUTHWEST
OF THE CAPE VERDE ISLANDS HAS CHANGED LITTLE DURING THE PAST SEVERAL
HOURS. HOWEVER...ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TO REMAIN
CONDUCIVE FOR ADDITIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF THIS DISTURBANCE AS IT
MOVES WEST-NORTHWESTWARD TO NORTHWESTWARD AT ABOUT 15 MPH. THERE
REMAINS A HIGH CHANCE...60 PERCENT...OF THIS SYSTEM BECOMING A
TROPICAL CYCLONE DURING THE NEXT 48 HOURS.
ELSEWHERE...TROPICAL CYCLONE FORMATION IS NOT EXPECTED DURING THE
NEXT 48 HOURS.
Looks like we could have our 1st tropical depression of the year later today.![]()
The shear killed it. Even with the ridiculously warm waters out there, it's tough to get a storm to form that far out in the Atlantic this early in the season.
Speaking of water temps, apparently oil makes the gulf water even warmer. I've never seen 96-degree water in the Gulf before:![]()
It's got some nice rotation but very little in the way of heavy thunderstorm activity. If it can build some thunderstorms, it may still have a chance...
does anyone hear read Jeff Masters blog on wunderground? lots of good info there....
It's not going to build any thunderstorm activity with the shear it's heading into.
