2010-2011 Division I Polls

Re: 2010-2011 Division I Polls

Well what will this do to the polls and the NCAA selections? How far do Cornell and BU drop assuming UM, UMD, and Hurst win out over the weekend?

Does Dartmouth jump into the mix now? espeacially if ND loses 2 to Minny? Thoughts anyone.

I do hope UW can pick up at least a couple more first place votes

In terms of NCAA selections, Dartmouth is definitely in the mix now. Much better NCAA prospects than Harvard, even though Harvard beat Dartmouth twice.

N. Dakota still has the best shot at ever at being a 4th WCHA team in, but that was because they were able to beat the top 3 earlier in the year, they were 4-4. They haven't kept that up. If Wisconsin finished 4-9 against those teams (counting a WCHA tourney loss), while still having lost to Minnesota State recently... that probably just isn't going to be enough.

I don't see Cornell dropping unless they also lose to Harvard. They still have far fewer losses than Minnesota or BU. Maybe Minnesota can pass BU with a sweep of North Dakota, but the NU tie Tuesday probably doesn't hurt BU all that much since (1) it's a tie (2) it was a while ago already.

Re: 2010-2011 Division I Polls

USCHO will be doing a final year-end poll this year. USA Today / AHM has done one in the past as well.

What a poll should be is always open for interpretation. Obviously Wisconsin is No. 1. I weight heavily how well teams performed against the best teams when it mattered most, and how teams performed in the tournament. This is what I have:

1. Wisconsin
2. BC
3. UMD
4. Minnesota
5. BU
6. Cornell
7. Mercyhurst
8. North Dakota
9. Providence
10. Dartmouth

I put BC 2nd, for their Hockey East & Beanpot titles and playing closest with Wisconsin in the NCAA tournament, and the big win over Minnesota. UMD & Minnesota is a tougher call, since Minnesota really pushed Wisconsin in the WCHA tourney, but UMD's NCAA road QF was so solid and Minnesota's so poor I have to give the edge to UMD. I think they were the best 4 in the end.

I keep BU, Cornell, Mercyhurst 5th-7th. None of them beat my top 4 late in the year and I don't see any argument that they would have.

As for 8-10, UND's results against UMD and Minnesota always impressed me. Providence's Jan-Feb-March results against BC impress me more than Dartmouth's Feb-Mar results against Cornell.

Given past history of these polls though, I expect to see (1) Wisconsin, (2) BU, (3-4) BC & Cornell in some order (I'd hope BC would at least finish above Cornell) and no real critical analysis. Yawn.
