2010-2011 Division I Polls

Re: 2010-2011 Division I Polls

I see Wisco as the clear No 1 right now. At full strength would have the Big Red still second and beating MC next week, but if their top tender cannot go (She was not playing last weekend), the nod would go to MC to win that game, in which case the Big Red will fall out of the top four. I see BU as a top four team. IMHO people are not giving them enough credit. UMD is the other top contender.

So given the injury reports and from what I've seen this is how it will be by the end of this month:

1 - Wisco
2 - BU
3 - MC
4 - UMD
5 - Cornell
6,7,8 Minny, ND and BC
Question: Is it time for that new "The D1 Forum Poll - 2010 - 2011" thread yet, to answer the "Who will win the 2010 - 2011 NCAA crown" question as per opinions from fans around North America? I am compelled to change my earlier vote based on evidence witnessed since the original poll.

Re: 2010-2011 Division I Polls

One observation and one question.

Observation: the decision to keep Quinnipiac in the top 10 after the Wayne State split last week was probably one of the worst I've seen in the polls in a while. I'd have said that even before tonight's loss.

Question: Why doesn't Bemidji State get more respect? Bemidji has about the same conference record as Quinnipiac, despite being in a tougher conference, and Bemidji's nonconference results are more impressive. Even within the WCHA, OSU has gotten more votes than Bemidji all season despite trailing them in the WCHA standings pretty much all season. I think Bemidji should be a No. 10 even after this loss to UMD (though if Harvard takes 5 or 6 points from Yale, Quinnipiac, and Princeton, I'd have to give them the nod).

Re: 2010-2011 Division I Polls

BSU started Alana McElhinney in net tonight rather than Zuzana Tomcikova in net tonight; "Z" wasn't even listed in the box score. I wonder why? McElhinney beat MC earlier, but this is only her 4th decision of the season.

Right, I should've mentioned that too

The Beavers will add another challenge without starting goalie Zuzana Tomcikova, who is playing in the Winter World University Games for Team Slovakia through the next two weeks in Turkey.
wow, couldn't have timed that much worse. Miss Bulldogs & Badgers and have your first series back against the Gophers.

Re: 2010-2011 Division I Polls

BU and BC? Not sure just how strong/weak either of them are. They seem pretty close. Both have disappointing results that fans explain away by missing personnel. Eventually, either BC or BU will get a distinct advantage over the other, one will be positioned in the top 4, and the other will have to fight for an NCAA spot.

BU took 2 out 3 from BC, and shut out BC in the 2 wins. BU won during the 4 Nations cup without their top 2 players. Clearly better than BC, clearly better than any other team in hockey east.

That post is a few weeks old now. I don't think there's anything to argue

No change in the top six teams or in first-place votes this week, although UW saw two participants switch their ballots for the team from second to third.

Re: 2010-2011 Division I Polls

Who are the pollsters, anyone know? I am assuming 3 of them either coach at Cornell or are alumni. Only way to explain 3 1st place votes IMO.

BC ties and loses to Maine at home and loses no ground? I know they beat BU, seems to support moving them both down below Hurst and UMD.

Once again the bias seems apparent. ND's last 7-8 games will be against UW (2 losses), UM (2), OSU (2-3), and likely UW (1). They could play great hockey and end up 2-5 down the stretch. will that knock them out?

Meanwhile PC holds onto 9th even though they are batting .500 over their last 8 games including losses to NH and Vermont. Again I know they beat BC at home, but when does to the polls really start to reflect the reality of the competition factor on the East Coast. Would PC and BC do any better in the WCHA than say OSU?

Curious what others think. As I see it the WCHA should have 4 NCAA teams, with a strong argument for 3 in the top 4.

So you are upset that 3 out 15 pollsters (or whatever) voted to Cornell???? That shows bias??? So you can't see how Cornell, the team that is 21-1-1 and has 127 goals for and 21 against, may get some voters to think they are deserving of a number 1 vote? In your mind that is SO OUTRAGEOUS? You want BU to move to down in polls because they lost recently? They still only have 4 losses on the season and as BC goes who would you move ahead of them? Short of a complete melt down by BC they have a pretty solid lock on #7. If North Dakota losses 2 more regular season games and finishes 17-12-3 you would still rank them ahead of BC?

Once again the bias seems apparent. Yes I agree is apparent.

I don't put much (read any)weight on this poll, but, I happen to agree with granddaddyscout! Overall strength of schedule. And, eastern bias is not unheard of in this poll. I think most WCHA fans (that is those of us that follow and see WCHA teams play on a regular basis) believe without a doubt, that WI is the best team out there. And, becuase the WCHA has proven to be the strongest league (with a stronger top 5 this season than in the past) season in and season out . . . that it offers better competition than the non-WCHA teams have. Therefore how would Cornell fare if they played in the WCHA week in and week out?? Probably fewer goals scored and more scored against.

North Dakota has to finish up against Minny. So, if they lose both I'd still say they'd rank ahead of BC.

Just my opinion.

Re: 2010-2011 Division I Polls

A few thoughts:

-- probably logic for rating Cornell higher is either (1) some voters think that 1 loss is preferable to 2 losses and 2 ties no matter what (2) some voters just move whoever lost most recently down (3) some voters might favor Cornell cause they successful avenged their loss to Mercyhurst, they reached the final last year, etc. I don't agree with it though. We've seen teams with Cornell's track record lose in NCAAs year after year to the WCHA champion.

-- to the extent that there's bias, I think there's a bias towards coaches believing there is more parity than there really is. It's not an eastern bias. But it can look like one since the WCHA is generally stronger. There are some seasons when I thought WCHA advocates overstated their case, but this is not one of them. The league clearly has 4 of the best 8, and it could easily have 6 in the top 10.

-- really Bemidji State is the team that deserves to be in the top 10 instead of Providence, not OSU.

-- the 9-14 teams are all really close though so I can't really fault any interpretation. No one ranked 9 or higher has really been consistent enough to show they indisputably deserve a top 10 ranking.

-- yes when BC beat BU, and ties and loses to Maine, I think most voters would just throw up their hands in bewilderment and say these results all cancel each other out. I wouldn't agree the Maine losses didn't hurt them, as BC probably would've moved up if a poll had been taken midweek.

I’m not upset just puzzled, but you seem to be upset:(. Again I am not saying Cornell isn’t a good team, I will even give in that they should be in the top 4. But really who do they play, let’s look at the last 4 games. Cornell a tie to Clarkston, a 2-1 win over SLU and then 2 blow outs against Brown and Yale. These teams if ranked would all be below 20, but that is typical for Cornell’s schedule. UW by comparison, 5-0 and an OT win against BSU ( a team that beat Mercyhurst, UMD, Minny, and ND this season) then they have 5-0 and 8-4 wins over ND a top 8 team. To further the point let’s look at UW’s performance in its 8 games against eastern teams. They averaged 7 goals per game against RPI, Robert Morris, Northeastern and Mercyhurst. They averaged only 1 goal against during the 8 games. If they had played a schedule like Cornell’s they may have season to date stats of 244 goals for and 32 goals against based on those averages. As it is they have 168 goal for the season.

I really think you are missing the point, there are 4-5 teams in the WCHA that could have the same record as Cornell if they were playing their schedule. In fact BSU split with Mercyhurst just like Cornell did. ND plays Minny in their last 2 reg season games BU plays Maine and BC plays NH. Are you really going to compare the three schedules. ND should lose to Minny based on the polls, then they get to play BSU in the WCHA 1st round which could very easily go to 3 games. If they succeed they will then play UW.

As I have said before it is ultimately decided on the ice, I just don’t see how anyone with a understanding of the game can look at the way UW has dominated the WCHA this season and vote someone else as #1. It will be interesting if 4 WCHA teams get in and they all end up playing eastern teams in the 1st round. What will you think if Cornell ends up 30-2-1 with a 1st round NCAA loss? Your numbers are off BTW, their site shows them at 25-1-1.
