Was wondering the same thing, where that came from...there used to be only one Ohio State; now there must be a "THE" Ohio State plus one or more other plain vanilla Ohio States that don't deserve the "THE".

I think its part of its official name. The university is quite proud "The" and it's emphasized during student orientation that the schools name is "The Ohio State University".

This is correct. It's the official name of the school. I'm old school, I actually still just say Ohio State myself.

Why are we called ""THE" Ohio State University"?
In 1986, a new University logo was introduced in the hopes of moving away from the "OSU" symbol, which had been used since 1977. The change from simply "OSU" was said to "reflect the national stature of the institution." University officials wanted the institution to be known as "The Ohio State University," again, since OSU could also mean Oregon State and Oklahoma State University.

However, the "The" was actually part of the state legislation when the university was renamed in 1878. The following excerpt is from the Board of Trustee minutes:

"...the educational institution heretofore known as the 'Ohio Agricultural and Mechanical College,' shall be known and designated hereafter as 'The Ohio State University.'"

Those who wanted the name change thought the original name was too narrow in scope, and that it was inadequate for the institution that was the only beneficiary of the land grant act. President Edward Orton was insistent that a new name would separate the institution from other colleges in Ohio.

Legend also has it that "The" was used to show the other colleges which institution was supposed to be the leader in the state - both in size and in financial support from the legislature.

Will the Sioux suffer for their split with MSU? The Buckeyes for being swept by #1? I still see OSU as a legit top 10...or at least getting vote(s) but maybe a new #10?

I could see some shuffling at the top after this weekend's results. The Top four teams all lost one game, but as you can see from the results, it becomes an interesting jiggsaw puzzle.

Number 1 split a set with number 8
Number 2 lost to number 4 and won over number 10 and an unranked team.
Number 3 split a set with an unranked team
Number 4 won over number 2 and lost to unranked team
Number 5 won games numbers 11 and 12

Do you move 4 above 2 ?
Do you move both of them above 1 ?
Does number 5 move up ?

My preferred ranking is
1. Wisconsin
2. UMD
3. Mercyhurst
4. Cornell
5. BU

I agree it makes sense to rate Mercyhurst over Cornell, given that Mercyhurst beat them on the road, and I don't think Cornell's results in other games are enough to push them ahead. Mercyhurst has won the only game between top 5 teams to date. I heavily discount Mercyhurst's performance against Niagara (though the L will hurt Mercyhurst in NCAA seeding), though Cornell and BU did perform much better shorthanded.

It'd be silly to drop UMD below Mercyhurst for losing to Bemidji since Mercyhurst did the same.

Wisconsin I'd keep at No. 1. They're 5-1 against quality WCHA opponents. No one else can match that.

I'd keep BU at 5, though I expect in the actual poll, they'll move up because they have a better record than UMD or Mercyhurst, but I don't think their schedule has been as difficult.

My prediction for the actual poll is

2. UMD
3. BU
4. Cornell
5. Mercyhurst

A little surprised there was no movement at all in the top 6 but I agree with the rankings for the most part. I think the voters probably took into account the fact that some of the teams that lost were without some of their top players.

Wow, so that's quite a few results where you think the result might have been different were it not for the 4 Nations Cup (though credit to BU for pulling off a 5-2 win over UNH without their stars).

(not on the list: Qpac 4, Harvard 1 one this list -- don't see that one turning out different if Pucci & Katey Stone were here)

Hopefully the relatively favorable scheduling for Cornell / Minnesota / UMD / Wisconsin doesn't end up playing a major role in determining which 8 teams play NCAAs or get to host.

I am going to have to argue a bit with you on this point. :cool: Sure, I agree with your premise with Mercyhurst/Niagara, but Mercyhurst should have had enough reserve firepower to beat a struggling Niagara. An over-dependence on 1 or 2 players is not the symbol of a good team.

As for some of the others, Minnesota State did beat North Dakota earlier in the season so beating OSU is not that far fetched. Similarly, Bemidji beat both Mercyhurst and UMD when both teams were at full strength. And Vermont has a way of surprise tying Hockey East teams. It is always a bad idea to underestimate them.
