2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

This team was my great hope for the year and the twins come in and beat them?
Don't give up hope yet. With their reliance on young players for offense, I thought that they would go through struggles in the first half. The injuries to key players figure to only make that worse. And with the WCHA as tough as it is this year, a team can't be off their game and still win. But there is talent here, and I think better days are ahead.

It seems that the value of some players exceeds the personal contribution they make on the ice. Over the past season plus, the Gophers are 5-7-1 in games where Räty is not in uniform (compared to 24-4-4 when she is dressed.) In games where they are missing both West and Räty, they are now 0-3-1. Yes, that is a small sample size, and I hope it stays that way.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

For crying out loud. They got swept too? This team was my great hope for the year and the twins come in and beat them?

{sigh}

Before the series I figured they'd need 4-5 goals each game for a chance to win. 4 goals on the weekend not going to get it done. A dismal zero for the weekend on the PP doesn't help. Had enough of those PP opportunities giving chances to get even, and or close the gap...even take a lead if they take full advantage. Sioux played an aggressive PK with good success and obvious favorable results. The Lams are a force in all game aspects but those who recognize and comment there's more to this team than the twins are right on IMO. Impressive in my view were Loken, Dagenais, Parizek & Wiebe. Slavin on D and both 'tenders also very solid. I think Idalski obviously deserves credit for the teams play. Adding a handful of top notch Europeans to this roster...and the Warroad kids, the Sioux are an instant NCAA title threat IMO.

For Lucia's team we could read it in the newspaper or see it on any of about 5 TV news reports but for Frost's team . . .

Any updates on the injuries?

Sorry. Wrong info. Just received confirmation. Not playing today. No permission.

Hope the news is better soon. It would be great to see Noora suited up for the Huskies of SCSU!

Noora has been on ice and everything is ok. She will be between the pipes.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

I apologize to any and all for having complained.

First Habs provides information about Noora and then this morning's Pioneer Press contains an extensive piece on Jen Schoullis that also contains this nugget:

Schoullis was moved from center to wing this season, and her presence helped offset the loss of Emily West, last season's leading scorer (23-23—46) who injured a knee in the second game of the season. Frost anticipates the senior wing missing at least another month.

OK.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

I did see West this week walking down a corridor carrying her crutches, so I took that as an encouraging sign. Hopefully those playing with injuries are healing as well.

That is great news! Just hope the doctor is in agreement...

This is definitely NOT good news...assume the coach has no reason to mislead on the timing of her return.

Yes, this is encouraging, but I know that with knee injuries there can be a pretty long delay between being able to walk without crutches and being cleared to play with full contact. One thing I know for sure, and that is the team misses her scoring ability and her presence on the ice very dearly. Everyone needs to step it up a notch (or two) and come back from St. Cloud with a pair of wins.

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Coach Frost has always been a bit tight-lipped about injuries. That's his prerogative. (It's also been suggested that it has to due with patient privacy laws, which may or may not be the case.) Everything almost always has to come second- or third-hand. That said, it's very frustrating for those who follow the team closely and want to know more.

Glad to hear that Noora might be playing this weekend, and here's to hoping that Westy improves quickly.

I'm making the trek to the NHC for tonight's game. It's possible I could make tomorrow's too, but it's unlikely since I have activities related to the Gopher football game in the morning. :o

CrazyDave

There is a certain degree that is right. There is a right to know, but also the privacy laws are set in place for people's protection. It is also there to help the players and to prevent other injuries occurring as other teams may target that player/injury from there on out.

Brooky, I might go up tomorrow (Saturday) as well. The Gopher/SCSU mens game has been moved to Sunday, so no conflict with the ladies.

Check your email...when you get back from Mariucci that is. I'll see you at the NHC if you decide to go.

Check your email - we will cheer the Gopher Women onto another victory!

P.S. Thank you, Mankato, for your upset win against North Dakota this evening!

Re: 2010-11 Minnesota Gophers -- May, West Pursue Erie March

Back from St. Cloud. Great game for Gopher fans :D, despite West and Rasmussen  not playing. I don't have any word why Rasmussen didn't dress -- didn't even see her.

Link: Box score

Here are my players of the game...

Honorable mention: Noora Räty. Three starts this season, three shutouts, three Gopher wins. A solid 14-save performance tonight.

3rd Star: Tough choice here, but I have to give it to Sarah Davis for tallying her first collegiate goal to open the scoring for the Gophers, plus adding an assist on Kelly Terry's goal to seal the deal in the third.

2nd Star: Becky Kortum. Becky scored two important goals in the second period to really put the game out of reach for St. Cloud. Great effort by her.

1st Star: Anne Schleper. Got to go with the home-town gal after her 4-point performance (1G, 3A). She was just rocking the place. Her goal came on an absolute blast from the right point -- one of many bombs she sent at the Husky goal. It was totally apropos following the write-up in the St. Cloud Times earlier today.

Also have to give props to Ms. Terry for her goal and two assists, too. Didn't want to leave her out.

Thank goodness for the win. Otherwise I would have been really upset when I hit the two-lane closure on I-94 through Maple Grove on the way home.

Grogan also did not dress. I heard a rumor as to why, but I've been burned enough by unconfirmed information that I'll leave it for someone else to publish.
