2010-11 D-I ECAC Awards

Re: 2010-11 D-I ECAC Awards

Though it is about all we have for D, +/- isn't always the ultimate guide to performance. Some coaches put their two best defenders out as a combo, others pair the strongest with the weakest, roll the D in a changing rotation, or have any number of chemistry factors that they use. So while +/- might mean one D is better than another, it could also represent who skated with and against the top forwards and who didn't.

Re: 2010-11 D-I ECAC Awards

I understand that this could lead to the +/- numbers for top D being skewed downward relative to a world where every D played the same talent. But I've almost never seen any All-League D have the second-worst plus-minus on their team. I can believe that Sherry is not actually the second-worst player on the Princeton team, but you're going to have a tough time convincing me she was one of the top four defenseman in the league.

Anyway, I don't want to spend too much more energy putting down a pretty good college player whose career just ended in disappointing fashion. I've made my point, and it's not like the fate of the world depends on getting Second Team vs. Third Team honors right.

Re: 2010-11 D-I ECAC Awards

Wow, I'm a little surprised. I wonder if all the top Cornell players split votes. I hadn't considered Babstock much as a Kaz top 10 contender, but maybe I'm underestimating how highly regarded she is among the ECAC coaches. We'll find it tomorrow.

She was up against some very big competition for the honor. But the fact that she was able to achieve the numbers she did without the kind of superstar supporting cast around her that the other candidates had, doing so on a much less dominant team, and was a bigger individual factor in her team's ability to achieve the success it did, perhaps put her achievements on another plane for voters.

It's certainly is good for the game to have emerging superstars coming in to play for another team other than the usual suspects. :)
