2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

I am confused. First you have Lincecum arbitration eligible until 2013 and then you have 2014 as his first arbitration year. Do you mean 2014 is his first FA year?

He will be eligible for FA after the 2013 season.

Re: Thomas. And I'm not in a bad mood, I'm just finding this finding of sainthood for not getting caught to be stupid.

Just because he didn't get caught doesn't make him amazing and it doesn't even make him innocent.

so spring training starts in less than two weeks... where is Gary Sheffield going to play????? :p :)
He's going to be part of a barnstorming all-star team (existing only in my mind) that includes the guys you listed plus Pedro Martinez and Felipe Lopez.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Ryan Westmoreland, a 19-year-old outfielder and Rhode Island native widely considered to be the best position prospect in the Red Sox system, is scheduled to undergo brain surgery Tuesday for an unusual congenital condition that carries significant risk of neurological damage and is potentially life-threatening.

:(

Marlins ownership: "We'd like to keep our payroll no more than 40 million for the next 70 years. Can we just move to the AL East permanently? Pretty please?"

Braves ownership: "Frankly, we're tired of losing to the freakin Nationals. We'd like to move to the NL Central so we can beat up on the Pirates and Brewers all year long."

Mets ownership: "We're still ****ed at Carlos Beltran. No comment." EDIT: Really? You can't say p i ssed? Weak.

Nationals ownership: "We have Strasburg."

Phillies ownership: "I think we're cool where we are. Just don't let the Yankees in here."

From the "Never in a million years" Department:

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4994845

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro flatly denied that the internal discussions have taken place. "Lies," he said. "That's a lie. I don't know who you're talking to, but that's a lie."

The talk may well echo, in the end, another blockbuster deal that was discussed but never consummated many years ago: Executives of the Red Sox and Yankees once famously discussed a trade of Ted Williams for Joe DiMaggio.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

That's like arguing a trade of Ted Williams for Dom Dimaggio.

Howard is inferior in every respect to Pujols. Howard is even older than Pujols.

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

Howard is older than Pujols? Why was I thinking that he was young, like 25 years old?

Because he made it to the majors late because 1) he went to college first, not signing a pro contract until he was 21 years old 2) he was blocked at first base by Thome.

The dude won the ROY award and then a month later turned 26.

Albert Pujols is about 2 months younger. To put in perspective, the same year Howard was drafted, Pujols made it to the big leagues.

This is a complete non-story, unless the Cardinals were stupid.

The committee already has made good on Selig's promise by discussing a radical form of "floating" realignment in which teams would not be fixed to a division, but free to change divisions from year-to-year based on geography, payroll and their plans to contend or not.

The honesty of clean, unbridled cynicism. Gotta love it.

Just have the Yankees and Red Sox play 162 RS games. That would solve everything.

In tough economic times, it would go a long way towards helping ESPN slash their travel budget.
