2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

Re: 2009 MLB Thread, Part II: Claimed Off The Waiver Wire

No one has watched him pitch lately. He made like 8 appearances last year due to injury.

But I'm sure you meant his like 8 ERA the last couple years. ;)

I'm curious how many Twins fans read the Mariner's contract $$ for Silva, hesitated a few seconds, and then proceeded to laugh their backsides off.

I laughed almost as hard as when I heard Tim Brewster was a candidate for the Kansas job.

Just judging by the offseason so far, I'd have to put the Mariners as heavy favorites to win the AL West. They got a tremendous number 1a starter, a versatile top of the order guy, and now a guy who, if he doesn't go apesh** by the all-star break should provide some nice pop to their lineup. What have the Anaheim Angels of Los Angeles, Southern California, Western United States done this offseason?

Signed 73 year old Hideki Matsui who is playing on knees more used up than Monica Lewinsky's.

Signing Matsui to strictly DH would've been a great move, especially at the money.

But they're going to let him play in the outfield, supposedly. That's a good way to destroy your investment in the guy. As it was, he had to get his knees drained routinely last year just to keep hitting, having him play the outfield is begging for disaster.

None of the sources I have suggest Matsui will play outfield regularly. They're going to let him play the field sparingly.

The Angels were talking a big game, like two or three times a week. Matsui would be on the DL within two months playing the field that often. Even still, playing it at all is inviting far too much risk.

So I'm watching the 1989 ALCS between Oakland and Toronto and notice two things...

1) Even the power hitters appear slender, not muscle-bound behemoths.
2) There's this weird yellow thing in the sky, and lots of shadows on the field...the lights must have been really bright back then.

I think the earthquake in San Fran a couple weeks later broke it, and they had to replace it with the new lights you see in baseball now.

Jason Bay to the Mets pending physical.

4 years, $66 million.

Got our left fielder...

Any Cub fans know what's going on with Chicago?

I mean... Capps is a Nat... DeRosa is a Giant... Granderson is off the table...

Gonzalez an Oriole (though there's no indication Chicago was ever interested in the first place)...

Harden is gone.

So... are the Cubs going to make any moves or what's the plan?

They want a Center Fielder. They need an infielder. They need a starter. And they need an entirely new bullpen.

All the good players are getting signed...by OTHER teams.

Hendry needs to move... or not... I guess I'm not sure what to think any longer.

You didn't hear? The Cubs got Rudy Jaramillo (and then promptly dumped the player he was brought in to help). Oh, and they're raising ticket prices. And installing a new billboard in the left-field bleachers to block the unauthorized Horseshoe Casino rooftop ad across Waveland.

So yeah, they're pretty busy.

Nice.

I was talking about something to help the team, not help... whatever that helps. :D

That helps the owner. He leveraged himself to the hilt to buy the franchise so don't expect him to spend a pile of cash on free agents.
