I'm getting too old for this stuff.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Playoffs Part 1: How will the Sharks screw it up this time?

I just don't see Jimmy Howard as a long term solution. I like him and know him personally, but he doesn't have it. I predict the Wings will be in the market for a marquee goalie this off-season.

Jimmy Howard is the solution. They didn't let him bake in Grand Rapids for four years for no good reason. The Wings paddled around with the Osgood/______ tandem that whole time because having a young kid carry Osgood's bags/keep him propped up was a bad idea. Howard's turn to show he was an NHL-caliber goalie was this year and if it failed, so be it, they'd find a way to make it work.

Instead, Howard went "Carpe Diem" and made Osgood irrelevant to any conversation, to the point where all of a sudden Ozzie is looking like an overpaid backup next year even at $1.4 million. Luckily for Detroit, Howard makes half that much. Of course, Detroit's got a ton of money coming off next year and whether or not Holmstrom and Lidstrom come back/take discounts they've got a good chance to be in GREAT shape free agency wise.

So no, you won't see Marty Turco in Detroit because A) he's a mental case B) he's a clubhouse cancer C) Detroit's goaltending pipeline is rather full, why block it up? D) He's Marty Turco.

"Well, hello there!"

(I like Thomas, and what he's done for the B's the past few years, but I also think it's Tuuka Time.)

It's definitely Tuukka Time. There is no way Thomas sees the ice again this season. He's always been one of my favorite Bruins but Rask is the go-to guy. He is outplaying Miller and made some huge saves that kept the Bruins in both road games in Buffalo.

In a somewhat related note, my fiance let me use the picture you posted above as the save the dates for our wedding. I photoshopped text that said "the date" with Thomas catching it. He is literally saving the date.

Carey Price gets the call for the Habs tonight according to reports out of Montreal. I mean, why not turn to a guy whose last win was literally 50 days ago?

And from the "Gee, three games too late" file: Ryan O'Byrne in at D, MAB to 4th line W, and Mathieu Darche selling hot dogs.

EPIC WIN.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Playoffs Part 1: How will the Sharks screw it up this time?

Sure Howard is the solution right now, but didn't they draft a goalie in the first round recently? I suppose that could be a potential tandem.

As for the Bruins, Thomas still carries a $5 million cap hit for the next three years. No idea how that situation is going to be handled.

Re: 2009-2010 NHL Playoffs Part 1: How will the Sharks screw it up this time?

Howard was impressive last night. I'll give him that. It's like someone slapped sense into the kid.

However, if I am decent goalie that is on the market. I would give the Wings a look.

JD, Re: Rep,

I'm not saying that Boychuk can't play defense. But, watching as a Sabres fan, I don't see that as his primary goal when he steps on the ice.

Painfully?

Thomas has a NMC...which I don't see him waiving. I also can't see why anyone would want to take on an old goalie in decline with one of the top 5 worst contracts in the league...one that counts against the cap even if he retired today.

But you see his primary goal as injuring people?

Well, in year one, Rask emerged. Even if nobody takes Thomas, I believe Rask's cap hit goes down significantly next season. Looking at Thomas' numbers, he wasn't flat out horrible. He can still be a decent backup.

Not always. But certainly lining guys up for hits and trying to make a lot of noise.

Personally, I don't have a lot of hatred for Boychuk. He just happens to have taken out Vanek. And, when we're already hurting for scoring and your goalie's playing excellently, that's not helping things. But don't get me started on Chara... :(

The numbers Howard put up over the course of the season were quite good. One may go as far as to say, if not for the play of Howard the Wings may not have made the playoffs.

Boychuk doesn't have a rep because he hasn't been around long enough, but he hasn't been known for huge hits like that. That was more Ellis' fault than anything else.

As for Chara, curious why you hate him. It's not like he has a rep/history of a Chris Pronger.

No doubt that Ellis needs to keep his head up. Not going to argue that point. First game he tried to line up Myers (I think), but Myers was able to just stand up and send him sprawling. Second game he takes out Vanek; third he levels Ellis. Just seems to be a pattern.

He's just a thorn in the Sabres' side. And, the past few games that the Sabres-Bs have played (including the two before the playoffs started) he's had some kind of injury which has prevented him from dropping the gloves which means that we haven't been able to stop him from just doling out hits as he wishes.

A pattern of what though? He took out Vanek with a slash, yes, but didn't it look like he was trying to break up a play against a dangerous player? It's not like it happened away from the play. Other than that, I don't see any issues with him trying to line guys up for clean body checks.

A healthy Chara wouldn't fight either, especially in the playoffs. They don't want him fighting. And to be honest, I don't think any Sabre would want a piece of him. He's one of the most feared guys in the league--even as a fighter. He may only have one fighting major all year...

Both Boychuk and Chara are guys that I would love if they were Sabres and hate simply because they're on the team of a division rival (not that I hate Boychuk, see above). I don't think Boychuk's a dirty player, but if say Gaustad and Connolly both went down this series from his hits, I may be singing a different tune.

And, you really don't think that Gaustad / Kaleta / Myers wouldn't be able to spur Chara into dropping the gloves if he were healthy? I know the Bs don't want him to fight, but there have been enough tussles around him that I wouldn't say it's out of the question.
