#2 Cornell vs. #3 BU National Semifinal Game Thread

Re: #2 Cornell vs. #3 BU National Semifinal Game Thread

watched the end of BC v. W. and now cannot get the feed/ what is going on???

Re: #2 Cornell vs. #3 BU National Semifinal Game Thread

Not nearly as much "buzz" about this game as the first semifinal. That pass by BU's Wakefield was about as pretty as you're going to see. The 3rd period should be very interesting - we'll see if Cornell is up to the task.

Re: #2 Cornell vs. #3 BU National Semifinal Game Thread

I never would have guessed that Cornell would have only 8 shots after two periods. BU's defense has been stifling. Meanwhile their offense has mustered 21 shots.

Re: #2 Cornell vs. #3 BU National Semifinal Game Thread

2011 Cornell is 2006 UNH, 2008 Harvard, 2010 Mercyhurst -- good team, plowed through a weaker conference, plowed through a weak QF opponent thanks to their high seed, then wasn't able to re-elevate its game for the level of play in the Frozen Four.

Hate too but I have to agree. Though if Cornell had played this poorly against Dartmouth, they would have lost.

Re: #2 Cornell vs. #3 BU National Semifinal Game Thread

Mercyhurst and Cornell should've scheduled two more midweek games in February. If they'd done that, Cornell would've won this game and Mercyhurst would be in the Frozen Four. I'd say the same thing next year, but I'm not sure how good Mercyhurst will be next year.

Re: #2 Cornell vs. #3 BU National Semifinal Game Thread

Of course such scheduling would be highly unorthodox, and probably we wouldn't have expected the ECAC would've quite as weak this year. Hockey East will probably be a bit more top heavy too once Schaus & Stack graduate. But Hockey East was clearly #2 conference this year, and that was a huge difference.

Re: #2 Cornell vs. #3 BU National Semifinal Game Thread

Congrats to BU. They played a great game and were the better team this evening. I'll be rooting for you to bring the title east on Sunday.

Re: #2 Cornell vs. #3 BU National Semifinal Game Thread

Very proud of these BU Terriers. I always felt that our biggest strength was our ability to rotate 3 extremely solid defensive pairings. I think this was validated during the tough stretch we had when Holze and Poulin got hurt and Fratkin had to move from D to F. Our lineup is back to what it was during the win streaks and it seems like it's paying dividends.

With that said, Cornell will be scary good next year- I have them as my preseason #1.

I saw the BU-Mercyhurst game last week and what you said about their D materialized in that game. That and Jenn Wakefield's outstanding play at both ends enabled BU to advance to this weekend. Wakefield is such a difference maker and I believe she will be the key to BU's chance for a national title tomorrow. Wisconsin should pay extra attention to her as well as Poulin.

Cornell was supposed to be scary good this year and while they had a great regular season, I'm with Dave in believing that a weak ECAC led to their downfall. They didn't play anyone tough outside of Mercyhurst. A tougher regular season schedule might have helped them this weekend. Who's to really say? But you have to believe that BU was mentally and physically more prepared to play this game than Cornell.

You shouldn't get much argument on that one.

One other comment and a question: although it's difficult to judge when watching an internet feed on the small screen, it appeared to me that several of Cornell key players completely ran out of gas in the 3rd period. Just wondering if the coach might have gone with too short of a bench, too soon.

Possible, but they were running a short bench 12 months ago and still had some gas in OT #3. I think this is a case of a team that played their best hockey in January, and for whatever reason, wasn't clicking on all cylinders lately. Ironically, the same could have been said of BU until their NCAA tournament.

Have to agree to a certain extent. Was at the game. The first period between BU and CU was the best period of hockey the whole day. Ref's let them play and two teams going hard, great pace, lots of body, enjoyable hockey to watch. For some reason Cornell had nothing in the second and third. It was 1-1 until late in the second, then two quick strikes and it was 3-1, and you could sense the game was over. Although Cornell only had two shot on net in the second, they actually had more than two great scoring chances. Wondering if the hard play and body work in the first period was to the advantage of the bigger and more senior BU squad. They had a much better team concept than Cornell in yesterday's game, and it was a clear difference maker. Poulin was winning all the faceoffs in key situations, and IMHO that played a big part. BU's D with Ward and Watchhorn in particular very strong. Suspect that is the best D Cornell faced all year. Up front, aside from the regular heros (Poulin and Wakes), very impressed with Kohanchuk . Rookie Warren ringed one of the post in the third. She had a good game as well.

Based on what I saw yesterday, the right two teams in the Final. Should be a good one. Good luck to both, but I'm cheering for the Beast from the East. :D

Couple of schools of thought on this.

1- BU tailed off partly due to injuries to key players. Those players are back now, and they looked fresh yesterday.

2 -Cornell did indeed tail off near the end of the year. They really looked tired and had nothing to give in the third period. This team is still young, and suspect that they will be back next year. Ironically last year, Clarkson was on top all year in the ECAC, and they tailed of near the end as well. Shows you how hard it is to sustain at the top for a full season.

3 - Cornell's path to the final four may have been too easy. It almost like they were not Battle ready after they got behind in the game yesterday. Last time they played a team of that caliber was mid January.

Agree 100% with all you said.

Aside from losing, what the 4 teams I mentioned have in common is they all led at some point in the contest and were at least tied at some point in period 2. These were teams not used to opponents capable of coming from behind.
