13 Rules for Hockey Parents Everywhere

Re: 13 Rules for Hockey Parents Everywhere

During a televised high school game last night they ran a between period segment on the "new" skate sharpening technique. They had a guy on the ice "demonstrating" the improved glide which of course was impossible to gauge. But with 90% of the NHL players now using it, that's saying something. The guy from the local sports shop, which got a lot of (free?) publicity, said they've been doing it for two years now and they don't charge anything extra for it. They also have a "drive through" (like a fast food place) so you don't even have to get out of your car to try it out!

Hmmmm...drive through skate sharpening. "Can I get fries with that?"

"drive Through"....."don't even have to get out of your car to try it out"

Are you trying out the skates while Driving Through with the Car....

The only "Drive through" skating I'm familiar with is the leg action to generate more power efficiently :D

Exactly, perfect response and to add to it...and last time I checked "Skate Sharpening" is directly related to the subject of Hockey.

How about the 13 rules of skate sharpening:

1 - Always go to the same place for skate sharpening.
2 - Never sharpen our skates away from home at a big event .
3 - Don't get your skates sharpened 5 minutes before the game.
4 - Always have a second pair of skates in your bag.
5 - Make sure your spare skates are sharpened.
5 - Mark the sharpening cut on the white plastic part of your blade
6 - Don't switch to a new sharpening cut before a game
7 - Never change your sharpening schedules/habits before a big event
8 - Make sure you always have enough blade left on your skate
9 - Sharpen new skates more frequently the first few times
10- Break in new skates during practices, not during games
11 - Make sure you have the handy sharpening hand tool in your bag
12 - Use your old skates (not your game skates) on the outdoor rink.
13 - Give your regular skate sharpening expert a X-mas card

All good points OnMAA, with respect to points 4 & 5 to lessen the $$ impact and the load in the bag I would always have a spare set of steel tucked away as the majority of skates now have a replacement feature. When we got new skates I would purchase extra steel have them sharpened and stowed in the bag. I think throughout the years it came in handy maybe a dozen times and once in particular in the Czech Republic where there was no steel for hundreds of miles.

No, I should have been more clear for our Canadian friends. Here in the U.S. we have fast food restaurants where you can "drive through" without having to get out of your car to place your order. You drive up to a little window on the side or back of the building and tell them what you would like to eat and drink. You then pay for your order and when it's ready they give it to you, and then you're on your way! But with this skate sharpening shop, you drive up and tell them "I would like the FBV, please." Or you can order the conventional oval, and still have it your way.

And btw "skating through" is only an option in far Northern Minnesota, where the parking lots stay frozen most of the year.

We got a quite few places in the land of the maple leaf with much more permanent "Skating through" options. Just check out places like Churchill, Yellowknife or Tuktoyaktuk. Go even further north and you have Inuvik and Iqaluit. :)

Perhaps you've never been to Canada...drive throughs are just as prevalent here, and thankfully a standard feature for the majority of Tim Hortons outlets on the way to the rink.

Bad attempt at sarcasm...been to Canada many times, a few hockey tournaments but mostly to great fishing destinations in Northwest Ontario. Beautiful country up there...
