12/5/09 - Saturday hockey - Scores, rants, and upsets

Re: 12/5/09 - Saturday hockey - Scores, rants, and upsets

The puck was just in under the upper right corner, but it never touched the net and barely cleared the line. In defense of the goal judge, he wouldn't have been able to tell if the puck fully crossed the line. That sort of goal is completely the on-ice officials responsibility, but it was a bang-bang play, real fast... I was in the corner right on the goal line of the side the puck entered the goal, the perfect spot to see it. If the ref would've been on my side instead of the opposite side, he probably would have seen it as well.

Mind you this happened in the second period, if UWS wants to fall back on that and not consider their blown 5x3 and ensuing 5x4 in the third, so be it.

And nice cheap shot by the UWS player at the end of the game that led to the on ice rumble....

Well...I for one am not saying that is why UWS lost. They blew plenty of opportunities. That missed goal call is NOT why they lost. And yes....it was a VERY cheap shot at the end of the game. It's what Superior does best! :D

Yeah, I kept waiting for the one of the defensemen to give up his stick. The puck was in the zone a long time before the crease scramble that resulted in a goal.

I'm sure the coach (and probably the goalie) gave them an earful for that. As one point, the goalie even reached for one of his D-men's stick when he was close by.

Didn't hear that the Salem State game at Westfield St was chippy, rather after a sluggish 1st period, it was wide open fast hockey for the final 2 periods with refs calling everything close with several matching penalties. Salem had to come back 2 times in the 3rd to grab the tie, with their final goal a very questionable delayed call by the ref. Both goalies came up with several outstanding saves each.

While Salem & Westfield are off to fast starts, tough to see re-built Lebanon Valley and newbie U-NE off to very slow starts with no wins yet. Both got shutout last night.

On to next week...

Any Utica fans at the game this past Saturday night? How did EC look? I like how they are playing now except for all the penalties they take which could hurt them against better teams.

I was at the game and EC played well, no stupid penalties, great control along the boards. Tuttle was tested a couple of times and came out on top. The one goal he gave up was an "over the shoulder". bad bounce(for him)
Utica did not play very well at all and I'm sure the next games will be a lot closer. Was well worth the drive up.

Spot-on...except for the fact that it actually hit the net. Broad side of the puck hit it flat just inside the post and just under the crossbar where the net is tight. Net hardly moved and it fluttered back out down the goal line to the weak side where it was covered by Speer.

Surprised you didn't see it hit the net considering you were STANDING RIGHT NEXT TO ME :)

It doesn't matter much now, but it should have been a goal. I even went over during the conversation with the goal judge and told POYB that it was most certainly in. From the angle Wormser and I had there was no doubt.

Today.

Weren't you paying attention?

I meant when was the last time Northland swept a D-III opponent prior to this weekend. I guess I'll do my own grunt work:

It appears this is only the 5th sweep against a D-III opponent (thus not including Minn-Crookston) for the Northland program. Their last came January 2001 at home against MSOE.

Code:
 2/12/99 - 2/13/99 @ Lawrence 6-3 6-2
11/12/99 - 11/13/99 vs. Lawrence 2-1 10-1
 1/12/01 - 1/13/01 vs. Lawrence 8-4 6-5
 1/26/01 - 1/27/01 vs. MSOE 5-4ot 5-2
Apparently they're good on weekends of Friday the 12th and Saturday the 13th!

Interestingly, January 2001, which had 2 sweeps of D-III teams started off for them with 2 losses at Minn.-Crookston, including a 12-0 loss.
