Re: 116th Congress: Episode 1 - Trial by Fire

I don't understand how anybody could have misunderstood the tweet. Cornyn was saying something rock stupid, sure. But he was being critical of socialists by comparing them to Mussolini, a bad person. He wasn't being positive about Mussolini but exactly the opposite.

Republicans are morons, yes, of course. But let's not make stuff up. We can expose them just by being honest about them.

Re: 116th Congress: Episode 1 - Trial by Fire

Except he wasnt. He was using Mussolini to prove socialism is bad. (not a comparison...just full on saying socialists are evil) Mussolini wasnt a socialist by then he was a fascist. He deserves to be mocked this hard just for his misinterpretation of history.

You would have a point if he hadnt tried and explain himself and made himself look ignorant.

I didn't read his explanation, but I assume his thinking went like this:

1. AOC want me pay taxes for strong gubmint

2. Know who else had strong gubmint???

The end. I don't think he gave it any more thought that the morons who say "Hitler was a Socialist because the word 'Socialism' is right there in the party name..."

No the explanation was in the HuffPost article:

Cornyn later retweeted a message explaining that he was warning “against an overly powerful central government” ― and then added a message of his own saying that democratic socialists “have forgotten or never learned the lessons of history, and how their ideology is incompatible with freedom.”

See the problem is he wants to make it seem like because Mussolini was at one time a socialist and his government was oppressive and destructive that democratic socialists are in line with that. (because...socialism) The problem is the government he is speaking about, run by the dictator he was quoting, was not in fact socialist. (sort of like how Stalin wasnt a Marxist) So he dug himself a worse hole...

Break it down this way:

1) Makes innocuous tweet: Not really a big deal but looks dumb. Would have been forgotten by 2pm today

2) Twitter outrage ensues: massive overreaction but there was a gap that needed filling. It was not going to last...

3) Cornym explains himself and makes it worse: now it just isnt a weird use of a quote, it is his whole point was uneducated and wrong and he looks dumb because his insult fell flat.

Rule number 1 of Twitter...never make it worse. If you get called out for something small like this just shut up and let it pass. In 10 minutes buzzfeed will post a montage of Friends quotes or something and it will be buried. If you choose to fight back, or explain yourself at least make sure it makes sense. When the explanation is worse than the original tweet...you are in trouble. :p

In Cornyn's world socialism limits freedom therefore anything limiting freedom must be socialist. Some x lead to y therefore all y are x. It's a rudimentary logical error made by conservatives and other stupid people. The fact that Mussolini started out as a socialist seems completely beside the point to me. Cornyn would have just as easily said "I got stuck in traffic this morning therefore traffic is socialism! I dropped a hammer on my foot -- stoopid socialist hammer!"

This is true and I will never understand it. Has someone written a book on this? I used to say "no sticky" a lot during the W administration because things didn't seem to stick to Republicans back then either. Now it's Trump. If he were a Democrat he would never get away with it.

His people dont see any of that. All they see is what Faux and InfoWars lets them see. They ignore 90% of the media.

https://thehill.com/homenews/house/...-senate-resolutions-declaring-debt-a-national

Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) and Sen. David Perdue (R-Ga.) on Thursday are slated to introduce companion resolutions declaring the national debt a threat to the country's national security.

The introduction of the resolutions comes just days ahead of Congress's March 2 debt limit deadline.

The resolutions note that the total outstanding public debt surpassed $22 trillion in February with total interest exceeding $192 billion for fiscal year 2019.

They call on Congress to return to regular order, adding that a balanced federal budget hasn’t been signed since 1997.

“Congress has failed to maintain a fiscally responsible budget and has typically relied on raising the debt ceiling,” they state.

Perdue said in a statement that the debt is the “single greatest threat to our national security” arguing lawmakers need to come “to grips with that reality.”

“Ultimately, the debt impacts our ability to fund priorities, like providing our men and women in uniform with the resources they need to protect Americans,” he said. “This debt crisis will only get worse, and if we don’t act now, our country will lose the ability to do the right thing.”

Biggs, meanwhile, said he and Perdue felt the need to introduce the resolutions in their respective chambers because the country is “racing towards a fiscal cliff.”

I will give you one guess as to how Biggs and Perdue voted on the 2017 tax bill.

Re: 116th Congress: Episode 1 - Trial by Fire

Now we’re back to a Republican president, and once again deficits be ****ed. Between their tax cut and the nearly-trillion dollar spending increase passed on February 8th, in the first year-and-a-month of Trump’s administration they’ve spent more stimulating the economy (and driving up debt by more than $2 trillion, when you include interest) than the entire Obama presidency.

This is why every Republican I know hates Dubya and loathes Trump. (even leaving aside they hate their social policies) You dont get to be the party of fiscal responsibility and then run up the debt like a college student with his first credit card. Hell one of them (who is officially out of the party because of the MAGAytes) thinks Clinton is the best President of his lifetime BECAUSE he balanced the budget.

Wonder if Pittenger decides to try to get his job back

Well to be honest it seems like he got screwed in the Primary over shady stuff as well. That said he will lose, the voters will destroy any GOPer who runs and blame them for this. He should wait and run next cycle...

But they love them some St. Ronnie, amiright?
