So I haven't heard much about how the various pre-tax contribution allowances fared in the heist? Are contributions to retirement, med ins, fsa, hsa, etc still pre-tax?

edit: they must be, right? Even the GOP couldn't be that dumb.

Carried interest was supposed to be abolished. It made it through. That's enough right there for any competent legislator to say no.

I should read that sometime. Then again, I’m living it so it kind of seems redundant.

It's good to read every ten years. I always get more from it. Brave New World is like this, too.

Also: I hated the Richard Burton movie of 1984 when it came out, but each time I see it I appreciate it more. In particular the relationship between Winston and Julia captures what in my mind Orwell was writing about.

I recall seeing the movie once and not thinking much of it. I might give it another try here.

Joe still votes R, and you don't even vote, so you don't get credit for other people saving you from yourselves.

I’m going to start up again. Hopefully I can find moderate dems in primaries. It’s basically the best I can hope for.

Collins is a complete phony and any real Mainer knew that long before today.

No, I'm an idiot. I wasted my youth and I really wasted years 17-22. And it cost me dearly.

I wasted years 25-34 and it cost me almost everything. Welcome to the club.

"I coulda been someone."
"Well so could anyone."

When I first saw it I was a looking for a movie about the big themes of the book. It's not, it's a "day in the life" movie about what being in that society would be like. It's about the grime and the tiredness and the drudgery of it and Hurt plays it perfectly.

It's about the underlying, unspoken power of any totalitarian state: coercion, torture, "bloody constraint." We saw America turn into this during Cheney's Gitmo. Now we are seeing it start to descend across the whole country with Dump's shadowy threats against "bad hombres" and the headlong rush to destroy our institutions and replace them with anti-democratic corporate structures.

Fascism, and the far right in general, relies on the threat of violence. It is the dumb but big kid in the schoolyard terrorizing all the other kids. The moment the other kids unite of course the bully is exposed as a coward and an insecure weakling. But fear casts long shadows -- the movie is a very convincing demonstration of how a few horrible people can project fear and in so doing gain complete power over bodies and minds.

It's rapidly moving from warning to documentary.

Saw the movie years ago. Thought it was OK, but Burton was probably blotto for most of the filming.

I told my GF when rumors started swirling Mueller would get fired that by next Summer Trump will find a way to create his own police force. (lord I sound like a nut job) To do that he needs to basically destroy the DOJ and the FBI. This is step 1.

This stuff isnt funny anymore...
