10/23 UVM at Merrimack : Game 1

Re: 10/23 UVM at Merrimack : Game 1

Disappointing game for UVM fans after the extremely quick start (goal 20 seconds in). Merrimack's size is certainly an advantage - Medvec and Irwin were the only two players to have the same physical measurements of any Warriors. Couple of shots hit posts.
Can't place blame on officiating, even though not every call was agreed. Also, after visits to every HE rink, and this maybe my fifth visit to Merrimack, can't anything be done?
I'd believe one reason why they are good at home is the facility itself. Many more fans than usual tonight (I think broke an attendance record w/ 500), but also shallow corners, smaller surface, poor lighting, and A LOT of snow buildup on the ice. You never see games televised from North Andover for a reason.

Hey, thanks for bringing a decent discussion about a good game down to the usual level: the refs, the rink, and boy those Merrimack players are big and/or cheap. Bravo!

Incidentally attendance was 1689, admittedly not a lot, but not 500.

Can't anything be done?

Did you see the place in 1990 when they joined? Merrimack, as a school, is not even 65 years old and is only half the size of the next biggest school in the league, which is Providence. Those two numbers basically determine the kind of alumni giving you can get for projects like renovations or a new rink (unless, of course, you're a state school and don't need to worry about that-- you can get the taxpayers to foot the bill for places like Mullins and Tsongas.)

If the rink was that much of an advantage, I'd expect them to have a better record than they do, and not to have redone the ice bed this summer, which they did. Let the other teams break their zambonis and practice with the lights off before coming to Volpe if it's really that much of a handicap. But it isn't, not really.

Congrats to merrimack.

Thumbs down to uvm for absolutely embarassing themselves

Re: 10/23 UVM at Merrimack : Game 1

Well said dmjossel...speaking of renovations, did anybody from MC attend the town hall meeting last night just before the game? Apparently, there was supposed to be some Q and A session about the future renovation of the rink including funds needed, time tables and the such. Wondering if anybody went (Mike M, you around? LOL)

Anyhow, sounds like MC really brought it to the Cats according to the UVM audio feed...good to see MC's offense clicking, especially on the PP against a team that killed off 8 of 8 PP opps against BC last week, and their defense shutting down the PP for the 13th straight opportunity. Canata sounded solid and as long as he doesn't leave, gives us another 3 years (2 more after this season). Should be interesting if Dennehy keeps bringing in some scorers like De Costa!!!

Congrats Warriors.

Re: 10/23 UVM at Merrimack : Game 1

As a UVM fan in attendance at last evenings game, no excuses.

Merrimack was the better team. They played harder, dug out more pucks, and executed.

UVM did not lose this game, Merrimack won it with superior game plan and execution. Reffing was not a factor, both teams had plenty of chances.

All that being said, I do not enjoy watching a game at Lawlor. It feels like a sardine can. That doesnt mean anything could / should be done about it. It is their home rink, and their advantage.

Let's hope the Cats pick it up next weekend and play to their potential and dictate the game rather than play the opponents game.

Having attended 3 of the UVM/MC games in the past 2 years, the physicological advantage of this facility is really there. Only now, MC has the talent in players to use it to their advantage where in the past, maybe not so much.

UVM players talk about how shallow the corners are. Well if this is your home rink, you are used to it. The coaches probably send their forwards to forecheck the opposing team's defensemen harder. Sure looked like they did...

Did not notice it until last night but the MC bench stretches from blue line to blue line. Could not help but to think that when they have a forward going to the bench, the next one jumps on the ice and presto...a breakaway if the puck is in the right place.

Last night, they had 3-4 breakaways, getting behind the UVM D.

Again, it is an advantage and Dennehy is smart enough to use it.Good for him.

Make no mistake, this MC team is good and getting better. Losing 14 - 1 goal games last year shows that. Talent level up again this year with some of the freshmen. Going to North Dakota, playing in a facility like they have (compared to MC) and only losing the 2nd game by a goal tells me MC is good. The fact they played and competed (in score, not in shots) with that good North Dakota team tells alot. North Dakota has gone on to destroy Minnesota (even though one game was a tie) and beat up on Alaska 5-0 in Alaska last night.

Nice win Merrimack. Was honestly very surprised to see it. Good for their program and their fans.

There were years when I wished to God that we'd had any forecheck whatsoever. I think this is the sort of thing that matters when the difference between two teams is small.

Then again, once visiting players and coaches have noticed it, they could switch to a more aggressive forecheck and the shallow corners would be the same for both teams. Incidentally, there were always problems in the corners with rough ice, especially near the Zamboni doors on the NE side. By all reports from MC's players, this has been addressed. The ice bed and compressors were both replaced this past offseason, and in MikeM's podcast, the team captain Bowen noted that this isn't a problem anymore in the corners.

Of course, some NCAA teams have Olympic size rinks which no doubt they adapt their style (and perhaps even their recruiting) to fit, which benefits them in their home games and I think has a much bigger effect on how the game is played. No one seems to be going on a campaign to standarize rink sizes due to unfair advantage, though.

Did not notice it until last night but the MC bench stretches from blue line to blue line. Could not help but to think that when they have a forward going to the bench, the next one jumps on the ice and presto...a breakaway if the puck is in the right place.

It's been awhile since I saw a game at BC, so I don't know if this has been changed, but that rink had a similar issue regarding the placement of benches and penalty boxes, such that visiting coaches were actually entitled to swap ends during the third period in order to equalize things. I tend to think that there are at least some parameters, or at least league approvals, that cover this sort of thing.

As for the breakaways, I heard in the interviews and during the broadcast that MC was trying to stretch out the rink and was keeping a forward hanging around in midice a lot of the time, so I'm not certain bench position is necessarily a factor.

Again, it is an advantage and Dennehy is smart enough to use it.Good for him.

We hope MC is getting better. It's been a long time coming and 20 years fraught with false starts when the only kind of victories to be had were moral ones. I think what's really happened here now is that the culture of losing is starting to fade away. This roster has guys on it that haven't known years and years of nothing but losing. They don't know they're not supposed to win.

Funny you talk about renovations. My very last article for the Merrimack College newspaper in '99 was front page/color photos and was entitled The Volpe 2000 project (because it was suupposed to be done in 2000). Now ten years later we still have a POS facility but I love it because it's home. I wish they'd just get off their behinds and finish the darn thing.

Re: 10/23 UVM at Merrimack : Game 1

MC fans...hold on to your hats, heads and hearts...from Friday night's Town meeting:

Some of the highlights included:

*All new seating - roughly 2,000 chairbacks along the sides (where the bleachers are now) and steel bleachers behind the net at the Zamboni end for a student section (so a horseshoe style seating).

*New scoreboards, with graphics.

*New pressbox

I think that's it for big stuff - if there is someone else who can recall something I forgot, please add it. I know they said the cost was roughly $1.85 million to complete it (not including the roughly $1 million they put into the rink last summer with the new ice bed and compressors).

And, all of the work will be done after this season, and completed in time for opening night next year.

I'm not sure if I want to get my hopes up and believe it...it would be GREAT to see...and by all accounts, seems like it is going to happen. Hopefully things don't change like Warrior51 talked about from our time at the school back in the late 90's.

Re: 10/23 UVM at Merrimack : Game 1

merrimack certainly deserved to win the game. for all the uvm fans that are complaining about the rink---start looking at the way they played--not where they played the game.the powerplay was awful due mostly from merrimack' s argressive play.

Re: 10/23 UVM at Merrimack : Game 1

Kudos to Merrimack for not playing down to their competition.

I would think it has to happen, I would imagine they are getting some pressure from the league now. I understand they had problems with the scoreboard again today.

Re: 10/23 UVM at Merrimack : Game 1

I wonder if that means MC will get that first place vote in the polls that seems to be outta whack......BC --> UVM--> MC??

Re: 10/23 UVM at Merrimack : Game 1

They have an awful lot guts as fans of a team that will never make the frozen four. And after losing all their seniors after this year, they'll be back in the basement of hockey east where they fit in so well:D

2 Final Fours? Congratulations. You're one Frozen Four and a National Title Game loss from being PC!
