Re: 0 Days Since Last Shooting: Keep The Calendar At Zero

It was mentioned here that gun violence was at an all time high of 40k deaths last year. School shootings in particular were off the charts. There were a whopping 94 school shootings which blows away the 2006 record of 59.

Heightened security at school doors doesn't seem to be working - perhaps by then its too late. Security gates into parking should be tried. Gates are fairly successful at other security installations. Thoughts?

My high school sat on a solid square mile of land, with its boundary running through a heavily wooded area, and a lot of people walking to campus. Short of a large wall surrounding the grounds, what good would parking lot gates do?

Yeah. It would need to include a wall to keep any non student threat permanently out of reach. Just can't think of any other real solution.

Story in today’s WSJ that gun ownership in Europe is surging.

Extremist parties and hate activities are as well. Just a line of bad American habits that are getting spread through the media.

This is the high school in my town

It literally borders a National Park and sensitive wetlands. Good luck securing the campus.

Googled the image and got this:

Best guess for this image: Oppidum

I guess Maine has a different definition of the word "desert"...:p

came from the name that Samuel Champlain gave it: “L’Isle des Monts-déserts ” (Island of the Desert Mountains, meaning "Island of the Barren Mountains" since the tops of the mountains don't have trees). The weird things is locals pronounce it like "Dessert" supposedly because that's closer to the French pronunciation

I never really gave it much thought but you are spot on about that.

Baby steps, but at least something. This should have support from about 85% of the US population.

Gun control: Democrats to unveil landmark background check bill

In a major victory for gun control advocates, the legislation aims to close longstanding loopholes in federal law, which requires criminal background checks when guns are sold by licensed dealers but allows private citizens to sell and transfer guns to each other without any background check. While the new bill – a top priority of the new House Democratic majority – is expected to pass the House, it is likely to be blocked from becoming law by the Republican-controlled Senate.

I can hear Yertle the Turtle already: "It's dead on arrival".

We'll be hearing a lot of that in the next two years. The key is making sure the Republicans own it.

Ah yes, take away women’s rights. I’m sure women won’t mind - after all if gun owners need to pass a background check surely women won’t mind being forced to carry a child.

I’m not quite sure what this would accomplish. I thought now if you buy a gun from a licensed gun dealer they had to do a background check? That’s always been the case when I’ve bought guns.

This would require a background check for private transfers

Did you even read what you quoted?

Trade: The above (below?) legislation in return for abortion restrictions.

We won't even show up to discuss that.

Universal background checks make everyone safer...and are supported by a whopping 90% of the US population. That may be the only issue in 2019 America with 90% support. https://www.politifact.com/wisconsi...americans-support-background-checks-all-gun-/

Put C&C on the table and at least there will be something tangible.
