0 Days Since Last Shooting: But the Second Amendment!

Re: 0 Days Since Last Shooting: But the Second Amendment!

I think back to columbine a lot since I lived in boulder at the time and my roommate had graduated from columbine the year prior. I also worked on campus in the financial aid office and I’ll never forget the call I answered a few weeks later from a woman. She sounded terrible, and she told me her son had died in the shootings and wanted to establish a scholarship in his name. Since that was the first school shooting that most of us experienced, I wonder if klebolds parents would have known to notice anything. Up til that point it wasn’t common for someone to shoot up their school.

It wasn't. It's tough to adapt. Really tough. Gotta slog through it, though.

I don't know if I can, you are correct in that aspect. We need more details. There needs to be more involvement (not coddling, Mr Rufus) in our kids' lives. Don't let society raise them. Take responsibility. Notice warning signs and act on them. Heck, this goes for anyone. If your buddy starts posting stuff or behaving in a way that is unlike anything you've seen, ask them about it. "Hey, something going on?" "You feeling alright?" Anything.

I think that people should worry more about friends and family. With that being said, what’s the ratio of angsty teenagers to mass murderers?

Re: 0 Days Since Last Shooting: But the Second Amendment!

I am getting tired of:

"In the name of ISIS/National Socialist, I kill these people!"
"I'm depressed and bullied and no one likes me, so I kill these people!"

And then hearing how it's racist/etc to look at them differently. Same result, different mode of thinking. The mode of thinking is what we need to get at. As of this moment, this kid did not act in the name of any group, had some similar beliefs, but he still acted on his own.

You have no idea if those are different or not for each instance. How is his support of Nazi's different than support of ISIS? How do you know that people don't seek out ISIS BECAUSE they are depressed and bullied? You don't, so yeah, it's racist to just assume you can put everyone into one of two buckets.

They might seek those groups out for reasons, sure. However, they specifically NAME those groups in the acts of killing. It's not what you know, it's what you can prove. You don't name a group? You are a solo actor.

This is utter rubbish. Name ISIS you're a member, name Nazi you're a solo actor? For the record:
Since 2014, when ISIS declared a caliphate and captured the globe's attention, there have been seven lethal jihadist attacks in the United States, leading to 82 deaths, according to research from the New America Foundation. Not a single one of these attacks were believed to be coordinated by ISIS or one of its networks, but six were believed to be ISIS-inspired in "some form,"

Not a one was an actual member, yet you're willing to tie them to the group while not doing the same for white guys?

Did you even read my post? I said if the shooter declares himself for a group....boom, there's the detail.

This last kid, it was all about him. No group. No greater cause. It was about him.

Re: 0 Days Since Last Shooting: But the Second Amendment!

i don’t think you can put this on the parents. The kid wasn’t five.

Something we should consider is that the sense of entitlement kids have will have ramifications beyond these mass killings. I’m not sure how bright our future is if a large number of the upcoming generation is lazy and entitled.

lol

Texas Lt. Governor is saying teachers are part of the well regulated militia and should be armed...

My daughter is a teacher. The Texas Lt. Governor can go f-ck himself.

Correct. Even looking at ISIS extremists, would these guys be friendly humanitarians without ISIS? Nope. Pretty much all extremist violence, whether they claim themselves as part of a group or not, are all about themselves. Under nearly no normal circumstances should a group be indicted for the actions of an individual.

The biggest problem with ISIS or the NRA is that they are enablers of violence.

Radicalization. What in the olde days we used to call "incitement."

The Blind Sheikh / ISIS / Hate Radio / Trump are are playing the same game: incitement. They find fearful / hopeless people and make them vicious.

Both terrible...but I'd put hate radio and ISIS in two different buckets. You can be curious and listen to hate radio...if you join an Aghani ISIS military camp, you're already in deep. Likewise, ISIS gives you all the tools to carry out destruction...hate radio does not. It does direct you to the NRA.

I think he means more the state based loners or small groups whose terrorist attacks have been attributed to ISIS ties, those ties mainly being over the internet and other sorts of ISIS propaganda.

I think it can be pretty well accepted that anyone who's actually headed over to join an ISIS camp is ISIS.
